Rikenon XR vs. SMC Pentax-M , 35mm f:2.8

Hello,

I've arrived to a point on which I decided to buy a 35mm lens for my ME Super. Now, I've noticed that the prices of the Pentax-M glass have increased since 3-4 years ago even though the lenses are older, more used, etc. I would be interested to know if the Ricoh XR version would be at the same or at least close optical level to the SMC Pentax-M 35mm f:2.8. Are there resolution charts or similar to compare the two lenses more in detail ? How about flare, contrast, etc.

Thanks a lot :-)

Not so long ago, while roaming the streets of my home town a tram stopped in front of me. The doors opened and I made the photograph. Few seconds later the scene was gone.

Pentax MX stuck shutter

Hello,

I've ecountered some problems with my MX. Its shutter is stuck in cocked position (the indicator near the shutter button is red). Mirror is down and I can push the shutter button all way down and nothing happens and can not wind of course.

In the attachment is the MX without the botton cover.

BTW, how can I take down the top cover?, especially how to dismantle de shutter times dial (at what should I care more, are there some setttings I should remeber, before dismtle the dial? etc?)

Thank you very much.

FA 31mm Limeted or K5?

lens, lens, lens first... so I advice you to get the 31mm Limited ;-) .. as many others before.

Of course, in my opinion the K5 & 31mm Ltd. is my dream combo (I shoot about ~70-80% procent of my photos with 40-55mm focal lengt -35mm equiv.), still. get the lens first :-)

Good luck.

pentax FF... why?

On a FF camera one can use a 50mm lens (say, 1.8) ... so a cheap one (~100 euro).. with great results ;-)
For the moment.. the FF cameras are a littel more bulky ... but .. with time... the FF sensor might take place in smaller bodies :-)

Does it worth the price difference between the MX and Chinon CM4, Cosina CT1A (both mechanically controlled metal SEIKO shutter ) ? Often it goes at least 2-3 times the price and even more for the black MX :-(
Thanks

He he ISO XXXXX :-)) ... i prefer using f:2 and ISO 400 (which is the ISO i shoot ~80-90% of the photos .. probabli used to trix and hp5 :-D ) then f:8 and ISO 6400 ... and yes .. I don't even turn my camera on, when the light is not enough to read that my watch is showing ;-)
Anyway... at least would be enough for me a more usable ISO of 1600-3200.

In fact.. there's big difference in focusing/metering in stopped down mode vs. wide open ;-) ... especially on a tiny DX VF .. not to mention the speed.. especially for street photography. I gave up long time using M42 lenses on my k100d ... and the remaining K lenses goes using prefocusing the lens and metering using more or less.. the 'sunny 16 rule' :-) .. pretty primitive (especially that light metering method), huh... but .. that's life with Pentax and non-KA MF lenses.
Entry level nikon's also are crippled but at least they have more AFS lenses from where to choose.
That's why I use my MF lenses on a film body (chinon.. not a Pentax because a ME/MX is too expensive and not better than a Chinon .. or Ricoh ;-) ).

Nope.. it's Nikon's AF-S .. or SWD (Canon USm.. whatever) ;-) ... pentax does not have that build in the lens... nikon has (the 35mm f:1.8 AF-S DX lens) (i think sony too).

-No AF-S
-No metal mount (being a prime lens it will be changed more times than one changes a zoom lens while shooting)
-No faster than f:2
.. so, it must be much cheaper than the Nikon lens .

I would prefered a 35/1.8 lens, with metal mount, and WR in the place of AF-S at the same price as the nikon lens. I think that's would have been fair enough.

At BHPhoto, pentax 100/2.8 WR non-SDM is 619 USD , Nikkor 105/2.8 VR+AF-S is 789 USD ans non-IS Canon 100/2.8 USM 509 USD (with IS 944 USD... but that's an L :-) ).. yes.. mea culpa.. I didn't checked for the exact prices

I think the the price tag/performance doesn't justify to buy the 17-70 SDM over sigma's 17-70, or over Tamron SP 17-50/f:2.8 ... the 100mm macro is expensive EVEN if doesn't have SDM (like nikon&canon), and SR (like nikon&cANON) ;-)
Limiteds DA's are relatively ok... but MAYBE except 70/2.4 the rest are too expensive (for me) for their speed (f:2.8 ... 3.2 for 21mm and 4 for 15mm !!!)... true.. I like narrow DOF.. :-)
I said that about the kit lens because it is so good (NON rotating fron element !!! , good optics, etc... for the price) that it is worth replacing only by a Tamron/sigma 18-50/2.8 or maybe sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5 .. or 35/1.8 like the DX lens from NIkon ... great lens BTW for the price ;-) ... same for 50/1.8 (canikon) ... lenses that pentax lacks.

I think the bigger issue with pentax are cheaper , consumer lenses, especially fast primes (faster than f:2.8 ... 2.8 can do a zoom lens too)... a 35mm/1.8 (50mm equiv.), a 24mm/f:2 (35mm equiv.) , 90mm f:2.4 .. (135mm equiv.) etc.

More,... FF would mean at least 3 FA* zoom new lenses (wide, standard, tele), ~4 new FA/FA* primes (a 50/1.7, 24/2, 85/1.8, 85/1.4 .... etc.).. bedsides 50/1.4 and 35/2 ... but with prices at least at the same level as Canikon, plus.. others....

I doubt Pentax can do all this in.. let's say.. a year after the lauch of a Pentax FF camera.

For me Pentax cameras (not lenses) has 2-3 strong points: shake reduction with any lens, small sturdy bodies (+WR on some), compatibility with older lenses .. but here we have that crippled mount :-( .. so could be better... and that's all.
The best lenses from Pentax are the kit lens (realtively to what the competition is offering) for the same price.

Wouldn't have been cheaper a FF camera like a K7 with FF sensor and some up-date FA to D-FA lenses (6-7 in the beginning .. 14-28,28-70,80-200,85,...etc.) which would work on the DX sensor cameras too ?
Ok, MF is nice but FX is nicer .. at least for me :)

Compared with FA 50mm f:1.4 it's waste of money ;) (I think that the weather sealing and SDM do not worth that much).

K20D/GX20 is not too far from D300's dimensions. The weight helps for more steady shots :) ... at least for me. I don't mind carrying more weight. This kind of camera is not a toy, is a tool and in this class a pro/semi-pro one.

Obviously there is a mistake made by dpreview staff. We'll see which one is true.
