Why not a Pentax K-r?

That surprises me I must admit. I was told by the store I visited that the K-r wouldn't support HSM so I'd not get AF with that lens.

Perhaps I need to go and ask them to let me try it on the body and see what happens. Tho I might feel guilty about trying a lens when I know I'd be buying it from B&H or our local (Australian) Digital Camera Warehouse

Actually, having said that this one Ryda Digital Superstore - Sigma 150-500mm F5-6.3 Zoom Lens($1143.85) would be even better.

Tho it isn't the fastest TP around it would solve my most immediate needs and paired with the standard lens and a decent wide angle would solve virtually all my issues for some time to come and be be ideal for my upcoming European haunt! :)

Time to ask a few questions from the suppliers perhaps?

This one for example doesn't seem to work natively on K mounts

Ryda Digital Superstore - Pentax DA 55-300 F4-5.8 ED Camera Lens ($639.85)

Actually I saw one of these in Sydney a short while ago for around AU$1,000 but the HSM is the problem... the K-r doesn't have it so it would be manual focus all the way!! :(

I have this sneaking suspicion it's all about the potential market and the price people are willing to pay for a 'name'. The Canikon crowd by their nature seem to have a lot of money to spend and there are loads of them so the lens makers will go for the larger market creating a self-perpetuating system where people will go for the more expensive body in part because it has the larger range of lenses... producing a larger market for lensmakers etc.

I must be missing something because I've been looking around for a decent all-purpose lens and have never seen an 18 - 300mm lens for the K-r.

I've seen a Sigma 70 - 300 mm which works with the K mount... and a Pentax 55 - 300 which doesn't. I'm really looking for a decent (i.e. fast) long TP lens but so far 300mm is the largest I can find that will work with the body.

My 'impossible ideal' would be an '18 - 500mm' but if anyone can suggest any sort of long TP lens that will work properly with the K-r I'd be really grateful.

For various reasons I bought a Panasonic FX40 the other day but am yet to charge it (it's a Xmas pressie).

However whilst I bought it from B&H in the US, I'm in Australia. The US runs on 110v... we use 240v. Admittedly I should have considered this before buying it but there ya go. :(

Will there be a problem charging the battery or can I just use a plug converter and carry on as normal??

This is why Australia is known as "the clever country"...

.... but yeah 'Alfalfa' seems to have been a horrible little git. Even so it was a pretty stupid and pointless way to die! . :)

So far the noisy shutter is the only 'problem' I've found with the camera after the first month. I moved back to Pentax from a Fuji compact and when I first pressed the shutter it was so loud (relatively) I actually jumped!

Obviously having the camera close to my ear it's going to sound its loudest, and whether it is as noticeable to people standing nearby I'm yet to establish! :)

Still, I bought the camera because this will be my first DSLR after 25 years of compacts and bridge models and I wanted the best bang for the bucks. The K-r has great specs for a ridiculously low cost. For me as an effective newbie it will let me experiment, practice and learn; so features count as much as image quality.

Once I feel confident in my skills I might decide I need a new body... and might even go 'upmarket' to the big two, but right now I'm happy I made the right decision.

Would be interested in the bag for $50 (not new after all).

The wife works in the CBD so I could take her into work and meet you... say in Pitt Street... to collect it one day next week??

Some 25 years after my last Pentax camera, and after some informed nagging from a friend, I finally took the plunge and bought a K-r with a couple of 'starter' lenses.

I have to admit to being a little 'lost' right now with the wealth of features the camera provides... but after some experimentation, I'm beginning to get the hang of it. :o

This of course is one of the joys of the digital revolution. In the old days of film, 'learning could be an expensive process. From now on with the Pentax K-r, I can run off hundreds of shots bracketing them as often as I like with all sorts of adjustments without without extra cost.

I doubt I'd ever be an 'expert' but if I can take one or two shots to be proud of amongst the hundreds... I think I'll be happy enough.

So now it's off to the forum proper to learn all I can about the camera and try to renew old skills. Thanks for having me aboard.
