Macro Snowflake On Mohair

Settings were: f9.5 / 1s / ISO 200 / Pentax *ist DS / Vivitar 100mm f2.8. I used a +5 closeup lens on the already 1:1 macro lens, to make it a 1.67:1 macro reproduction ratio. Lit with natural light. Obviously I used a tripod. The background is a mohair scarf. After taking hundreds more snow flake photos (some with the K20), I still can't seem to beat this one! And now I live in BC where it doesn't really snow, so I can't try anymore.

Thanks guys! Maybe I will get it then. And I was thinking to try to find someone who'll buy my K-5 for maybe as little as $300, given its issues. Do you guys think that's fair?

Normally Boxing Day is the best time for sales (in Canada especially), but is the K-3 too new to benefit from this? I would be happy with my K-5, but its front dial has been broken for a long time, and now recently (after using it in the rain for 2 hours with the DA* 50-135 which shouldn't have mattered!) the shutter half-press mostly doesn't work. So I was thinking, maybe it's the perfect time to upgrade...

Also I'm in Vancouver (BC) - any advice for where to buy if I do? Gastown Photo seems to be the cheapest currently ($1,160).

Broken DA* 50-135mm - what should I do?

Thanks for the info! It always sucks to lose $400 by dropping something (or for any other reason), but I'm glad it'll at least be cheaper to fix it than to get a new (used) one. I did bring the lens in to Vancam yesterday, paid them $38 to look at it (which they'll deduct from fixing it if they do), and they said they'd get back to me probably by tomorrow. So we'll see... The other nice thing is I think they'll send it to Ontario for me if they can't fix. I really hate mailing stuff in general, and especially lenses since I'm not sure how to pack them properly - or at least, I could probably do it just fine, but I don't have a lot of packing materials in my apartment.

Thanks! And yeah, I'll ask the shop about that for sure. They told me to bring the lens in, but it's gonna be a bit hard for me to get there while they're open.

Thanks guys. So I guess I'll wait for Vancam's reply, hopefully take it in there for them to take pictures and such, and then probably send it off to Mississauga. And yes, definitely a great lens and well worth repairing. It sucks, because I was finally going out to take some fall photos, and it has suddenly become rainy, which is partially why I was using this lens. So now it's all rainy and I have no weather sealed lens to use.

By the way, previously I tripped over a line divider in the road (it was dark, I was running, and just didn't see it there), with the same camera and lens on my shoulder. Somehow they both seemed fine after, except I noticed that the sides and especially corners of pictures taken with the lens were looking bad lately. So I suspect it kind of needed repair anyway. Here's one of the last photos I took with the lens before dropping it; looks good in the in focus parts near the middle, but on the edges it looks almost like motion blur... but I don't think it is:

Broken DA* 50-135mm - what should I do?

So yesterday I went out to take some photos with my tripod. I hadn't used the tripod in a while, and I was used to it having something on the bottom of the post at the top which would stop it from coming out... When I pulled it up expecting it to stop, it came right out, and I dropped it and my K5 with DA* 50-135mm attached on the pavement. As far as I can tell the K5 is totally fine, but the lens is most definitely broken. No glass is broken, and nothing is actually cracked as far as I can tell, it's just broken open at the seam closest to the camera.

I got the lens (and the camera) from members here when I lived in Ontario. Now I live in Vancouver, and I don't think the lens is under warranty. Do you think it's fixable? My guess is it would probably be worth it if it is, since on here they're going for at least $750. There's a repair shop in Vancouver called Vancam, but according to Pentax they don't repair SLRs or SLR lenses. I emailed them to ask if they could fix it just in case, since it would be much more convenient to bring it in in person.

Anyway, what do you guys think I should do? Here's a picture of it:

I've got the same problem with my K-5. It used to work fine, but then it suddenly started doing that. Really annoying, but I just got a job and have been not really using the camera... better send it back before the warranty is up though, bleh.

Could someone tell me why?

The WB is a problem (or a difference at least), but clearly not the only one. Because the main thing that makes the K5 one look worse is lack of contrast, and you can see it's more prevalent in the middle and upper parts than the lower parts. Which is what makes me thing it's flare. And the fact that it's different lenses makes that all the more likely.

It looks to me like there's some lens flare on the K5 one. In the middle the black is washed out, lower down it's not (or, less so anyway). Also, the K5 should have a bigger dynamic range, which is a good thing, but it will mean less contrast - which, if it's not desired, is easy to fix with levels in Photoshop/Aperture/etc.

And just as a disclaimer, I'm not 100% sure about that last part, but that's my impression, and I'd be happy if someone corrected me if I'm wrong.

Oh right, of course. D FA just means digital coatings, but still full frame.

It says FA, not D-FA. There is no WR version in FA (which is full frame). And the one you linked is D-FA, so it could be WR, but it isn't. Anyone selling the WR version will almost definitely say so, since it clearly adds value to it.

Well, you were luckier than me! I knocked over my tripod with K20D on it last year; it was on the lowest setting, but the impact on tile floor still broke it. I just sold it for less than this, but that's because mine is actually broken - it still takes pictures, but apparently the main board is broken, and basically none of the manual features work, and you can't go to the menu.

Anyway, good luck with the sale!
