And here's second set of 10 from me. Taken between June and December:

The Dark Hedges is definitely an over-run tourist spot (though 6 trees have been taken down since this photo was taken and more are at risk) but there weren't many people here on this day. The weather was lousy but cleared in late afternoon and the light was gorgeous. I should really clean up that fringing... DA 70 Ltd, K-1 II:

This photo was taken one chilly October morning from the balcony off my bedroom in Washington. Mt. Pilchuk and birds... DA*300, K-1:
IMGP9221by Tim Wilson, on Flickr

Not a great photo, but the sound of all those snow geese squawking and their wings beating as they flew over our heads was intense and amazing. DA*300, K-1 II:

I discovered, on a walk in South Whidbey State Park, how good the D FA 21mm Ltd is in a relatively dark forest. D FA21, K-1):

I had the DA*300 mounted for birds at a distance and wasn't expecting this close encounter with an osprey (this is uncropped). Focus is a bit off but it's a keeper anyway. Anna Maria Island, Florida on 12/23. DA*300, K-1 II:

I just took a stroll through your album. Very cool! Were those photos all taken in Alabama? Many of the photos were reminiscent of critters I used to see in Hong Kong.

Merry Christmas to all the Pentaxians here!

I had a fantastic year - about half of it in Ireland and then we moved "home" to the U.S. Pacific Northwest. I don't think I'd win any photography prizes, but I captured some very memorable experiences. Here are my first five (all from April and May):

My wife and I spent a really wet, windy weekend on Inis Mór in April. It was absolutely stunning. This was taken with my K-5/DA 16-85 combo:
TJW_2090by Tim Wilson, on Flickr

Also on Inis Mór. Photo really doesn't do it justice (K-5/DA 16-85):
TJW_2578by Tim Wilson, on Flickr

We did a week-long walk on the Dingle peninsula with friends. On this morning the weather was lousy and we expected to see nothing as we climbed up Mt. Brandon but the clouds parted and we had a stunning view of landscape and Atlantic Ocean. And sheep. DA 16-85, K5:

From yet another weekend away in Ireland. This was taken in Timoleague. D FA 21mm and K-1 II:

IMGP6672by Tim Wilson, on Flickr

I think Gannets are gorgeous and I've long wanted to capture some. 300mm isn't really enough reach, but I was happy to get this on a boat trip around the Skellig Islands (DA*300, K-1 II):

Happy Sunday!

I'm just wrapping up a long Thanksgiving weekend on Whidbey Island, in western Washington. Stunning weather, beautiful scenery and some delicious Dungeness crabs. #1 and #2 were taken with my D FA 21mm Ltd. All the rest were with my DA* 300.

Snow geese stop over in the Skagit Valley in Washington every year and it's a sight to behold. I've been living overseas for most of the last 17 years and haven't seen this in a long time. Took a drive two weeks ago and only saw a few here and there, but on Sunday - wow.

Here they come:

Nature A Hike in Western Washington USA

Hi all!

Last weekend I hiked with my wife and some friends along the middle fork of the Snoqualmie River in Washington (state), USA. I was surprised by how many mushrooms we saw and the wide variety. I brought only my DA 35mm macro lens, which vignettes pretty badly on full frame, but a little bit of cropping is all it takes to get good photos with it. I wish I had brought a flash...

Good discussion. I've struggled with this too - wanting to get maximum dof and sharpness and having plenty of light (via an AF160FC ring flash) to stop down but still not getting what I want out of the photo. I'd like to play with focus stacking more but my favorite macro subjects are insects and they don't generally sit still (and photographing dead subjects doesn't seem right to me, though I acknowledge the spectacular results some people get). I've settled on f16 but maybe I need to take a closer look at that versus f11.

After traveling the world for the last 17 years my wife and I moved back to the U.S. Pacific Northwest about 3 weeks ago. We left in 2006 and have done tours in London, Seoul, Panama City, NY, Hong Kong and Dublin. It was really hard to give up that lifestyle, but this is our consolation prize - a 35 year old VW Westfalia:

I have LR 6 and have the same issue with my D FA 21mm Ltd. All of my other lenses are recognized and a profile added automatically (with .DNG files). For this one lens I have to manually select it (and it does appear in the selection list just like your experience). Even though LR has a valid profile it doesn't apply the lens name to the photos taken with that lens (both .jpg and .dng) so I'm using lenstagger on all of the photos I take with that lens. It's a pain.

I visited Ireland's Eye yesterday. It's a small, uninhabited island off of Howth (near Dublin) that is home to thousands of nesting sea birds. It's nesting season, so there are lots of chicks and eggs around. It was a stunning day. I hope you like seagulls!

The island is known in Irish as Inis Mac Neasáin. Its English name is evidently based on an old Norse word for island (ey).

SMC DA 35 - haze and maybe fungus

Interestingly enough, I noticed a few months ago that my smc DA 35mm Ltd lens also has some fungus. I bought the lens new in 2009 or 2010 and have used it a lot (and I don’t see any effect on photos). I lived in really humid places like Korea, Panama and Hong Kong and used a lot of air conditioning in each place, though I now have a humidity controlled cabinet. I’ll be moving back to the US in a couple of months so I’ll be curious what you hear from ACR…

I find it a bit frightening too. With photos it’s mostly harmless fun but how will we trust photographic evidence of crimes etc. in the future? I think AI will reinvigorate interest in film cameras because you can’t fake it (until you scan it, I suppose…).

Hi all!

I spent last week as a tourist in Counties Cork and Kerry (and I even went over the Cork and Kerry mountains!). Beautiful places to explore. This time of year there are a lot of people visiting the Ring of Kerry and we encountered a lot of buses doing the ring. We did find some peace and quiet and had a fabulous time. Here are some of the photos I took during the week. All taken with my K-1 Mk II. The D FA 21mm Ltd got a lot of use this trip, as did my DA*300 and even my APS-C 35mm Ltd.

I find this frustrating too. When I use the tool and software i keep track (on a piece of paper) of which photos (by file number) are taken with which fine focus settings. It's been a while since I used the tool but I was able to correlate points on the graph to file names and eventually figure out which setting is best. Someone who's really good with ExifTool could probably find a way to populate the appropriate EXIF field to make the software easier to use...

I have a Capture clip on the left-hand shoulder strap of my Everyday backpack and I love it. It's convenient to grab the camera, it frees up both hands and the camera doesn't swing around and bang into things. I can even clip the camera there with my DA*300 attached for short periods of time, though that does get heavy on my left shoulder...

Hi all,

I thought I'd give a shout-out to Peak Design for excellent customer support.

My wife bought me a 30 liter Everyday Backpack in 2017. I've used it extensively and traveled quite a bit with it. A few months ago one of the side zippers failed. I went to PD's web-site and saw that they had a lifetime guarantee so I got in touch with them. Long story short, they sent me a spanking new replacement backpack, which I'm happily using today. My original was purchased in the U.S. but they sent the replacement to Ireland, where I live at the moment.

Happy shooting!

Happy Saturday!

Last year my wife and I walked part of the Camino de Santiago with a couple of friends. This year we decided to walk the Dingle Way, on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, in the west of Ireland. We walked about 115km over 6 days. We carried day-packs (and cameras) but the rest of our luggage was transported for us from lodging to lodging (mostly B&Bs). We were very lucky with the weather, though we did get some rain. The landscape and scenery were stunning and every day was different. Here are some of the hundreds of photos I took on the trip. I took my K5 and my DA 16-85, which I used 95% of the time. I also brought my DA 35mm Ltd., which I used a little bit. I was really happy with camera and both lenses.

It's an amazing, beautiful country. Full of history. One could spend years exploring here and I highly recommend it for a long vacation. We'll be leaving this summer after only two years (a bit of a short stay for us) and will be leaving so much undone. We're leaving our son behind and so we'll have a good excuse to visit!
