Very true! They also have the financial resources that Hoya didn't. I believe a little patience is in order. I don't believe they bought Pentax to watch it die.

While I do not agree it is "too late" I do believe that Pentax's biggest short coming is marketing. People are hard pressed to buy a product, no matter how great, that they know little to nothing about. Why does Coca-Cola spend millions of dollars on advertising each year? Is there anyone left on planet earth that hasn't heard of Coke? Of course not! Coke advertises to keep the brand on the forefront of people's mind. In short, they advertise so people don't buy a Pepsi. Pentax is not on the forefront of anyone's minds except for those of us that happen to frequent this forum. In order to be a viable player in the market and not just tread water it is vital for Pentax to do a better job of marketing.

There was a recent public building dedication I attended. I saw several Canons, a few less Nikons and surprisingly 3 Pentax! Not bad for a town of 12,000.

Is K5 the "real deal" ?

I think so. We looked at the K-5, the Canon 60D and the Nikon D7000. This was our first DSLR so we weren't invested in any particular system.

To me the K-5 was the best choice for us. The size, ergonomics and performance are outstanding.

Blame Simon and Garfunkel. They sang it "Nigh-kon" in their song Kodachrome from the 70's. It was really great advertising!

My wife wanted a new camera. She cut her teeth on a K1000 and has always had an affinity for Pentax. However, she agreed we should look at all our options before purchasing.

After carefully comparing the 60D, the D7000 and the K-5, she chose the K-5. She preferred the feel of the camera and how easy it was to use.

We absolutely LOVE this camera. I did check to see if it had a stain after reading this forum and I can't find anything.

The picture quality is superb and the ease of use is wonderful!

My wife is the photographer. We looked at both and bought the K-5. She liked the size better as well as having some older Pentax lenses.

Shopping for Camera and Lenses

My wife is a current K1000 owner and I am a point and shoot guy. We looking to buy our first DSLR. We have narrowed our choices to the Pentax K-5, Nikon D7000 and Canon 60D.

My question is on lenses. We will be shooting mostly kids sports, volleyball, basketball, soccer, baseball and swimming. Currently all are either indoors or daytime but night time football is possible in the future. She has a few older 3rd party lenses, but not enough of an investment that would lock us into one brand or another.

What type of lense or lenses would be recommended. We want good shots but don't want to break the bank. Thanks in advance.
