What's available if you want 500mm reach?

Hi Norm,

The Tamron Pz-AF teleconverter shows up surprisingly often in the marketplace on this forum. If you're curious about how it performs I can lend you mine for a couple of weeks to try it out. The only thing I ask is: a) you pay the shipping costs and b) that you do a little controlled pixel peeping and send me some 100% crops of photos taken with this combo comparing before and after teleconverter. I'm seriously starting to look at the 60-250 to fill the gap in quality lenses I have between 135 and 200 mm for outdoor sports photography.

The Sigma 1.4 teleconverter might also work with your 60-250, although it will use screwdrive focusing instead of SDM. It is available from major online retailers such as B&H. As a piece of glass it is superior to the Tamron teleconverter. Better coatings, less internal flare, probably better resolution. Just be very careful that everything inside lines up with the back element of the 60-250. The sigma has a sleeve that extends in front of its front element which interferes with most lenses except the Sigma lenses. I've only handled the 60-250 a couple of times, and I think it should work but you would want to be very careful measuring everything before attaching this combination together.

As another point of interest, two years ago I tested the combination of the Sigma 100-400 f/4 with their teleconverter for a week and it was a pretty good combination. Not great wide open, but by f/5.6 it was really sharp with nice contrast and a fairly decent bokeh. I don' t think the Sigma 100-300 can touch the Pentax 60-250 at f/4 though. I know that the two lenses perform almost identically on the Photozone.de reviews, however the Sigma has this strange "contrast flare" (not sure what to really call it) wide open. At areas of extreme contrast, say black to white transitions on some types of wildlife - there is a ragged edge of black overlapping white. My philosophy is that you need to be able to shoot a long lens at maximum aperture to justify the weight of all that glass. The Sigma is an exceptionally fine 100-300 "f/5.6" lens, but a really heavy one.

I live in Calgary, so customs won't be an issue. The TC is very small, so shipping will only be a few bucks either way by Canada Post or UPS.

Let me know what you think.

Best regards,

Andrew

Norm,

If you would like even more reach, the combination of a spotting scope, a Pentax FA35/2 or DA35/2.4 lens and your DSLR would probably get you reach of somewhere between 800mm and 1200mm. This combo is only manual focus and would be best suited for static subjects, and you would need to turn SR off. Here's a link to an overview from Luminous Landscape...

Norm,

Have you considered a 1.4x teleconverter? I'm using the Tamron version (PZ-AF MC-4) with contacts that allow SDM focusing with a DA* 200 2.8 lens. It is a pretty sharp combo - sharp enough that I was able to part with my FA* 300/4.5 lens. I'm guessing it will be an OK fit with the 60-250, however the Shake Reduction gets less effective since my copy only reports the lens' focal length to the camera, not the effective focal length through the converter.

This would get you to a 350mm focal length at f/5.6 (field of view equivalent to 525mm on a full frame if you add in the 1.5x crop factor), and won't take up much space in your bag. To be fair, there is a bit of image degradation thorough any teleconverter, and with my combo it is pretty hard to see the difference between upsampled and cropped images and ones shot using a teleconverter.

Item for Sale
Pentax FA* 300 / 4.5 Telephoto lens

Asking Price
$US 950

Item Location
Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Item Description
Classic Pentax FA* 300 f4.5 IF/ED lens. Optics and mount in excellent condition, fungus free, blades are snappy and oil free, housing shows some scuffing and wear on the silver coating due to regular use. Complete with lens caps and hood.

Reason for sale - have been shooting mostly shorter focal length for the past year (and trying to save cash to spring for a K-5 in the new year).

Photos of the lens and image quality examples are posted here:

Some additional real world images taken with this lens are here:

Image quality examples - the last two photos in the series were taken by this lens, at maximum aperture and minimum focus distance. This lens has excellent contrast and sharpness at all f-stops. With the shake reduction on the K20D, you will not need a tripod at shutter speeds faster than 1/60 sec. Maybe even slower if your hands are steadier than mine.
