Following. I am on the fence: being someone from the more conservative kind (at least for things like that - don't fix it if it ain't broken,) I will wait to upgrade my K-3 and K1 Mk1,5 until I am certain there are no bugs introduced with the new firmware.

This lens is a welcome surprise. As WA-options go, I now use FA* 24 f/2, A 20mm f/2,8 and FAJ 18-35 on my K-1, all of which perform quite good, but I would like a little more sharpness in the corners. Also faster focus and weather sealing wouldn't hurt. If the 21 Limited performs well, it might very well end up being my go-to lens. Very exited!

K1 Mark II Dynamic Range - Purple and/or Magenta Artefacts

I feel the Mark II is one hell of an underestimated camera. IMHO this has to do with dpreview flawed review which was copycatted by every other review site. Dpreview eventually redid their testing but by then it was already too late.

I also agree with the fact that Lightroom is not a very good software for Pentax camera's; a few years ago, I changed to C1 and never looked back. Now that V20 has a dedicated MkII profile, I couldn't be any happier. The files are incredible to work with...

It IS a hostile comment.
Just because I think that it doesn't hurt to file a request/complaint at Phase One, you shouldn't be posting things like 'learn to live with it and move on.' I have learned to live with it; won't stop me from asking Phase One to correct the bugs...

Where did this hostile comment come from?
FYI, I have learned to deal with it; As a matter of fact, just this morning I paid the upgrade from V11 to V12 (knowing that I will have V20 for free.) Sure, C1 has its quirks, but I love this piece of software...

@Mirocal, I not going to quote you so you have the time to rephrase what you wrote; remember you are under NDA, so I would advise to do so.

That said, some things you say are not true; you clearly didn't look around. That is all I am going to say, since I am under NDA too...

...and of course, you could always report a bug for anything that you want to see improved (ie. not supported camera, EXIF wrongly represented, etc...) I did so since every release of a new beta. I think if there are enough complainers, they will fix it...

Agreed, that C1 has it's quirks, but IMHO, what it does best is IQ, way ahead of competition. It's a solid piece of software and while some may have more features, C1 focusses on IQ and productivity. V20 steps up that game (for me at least.)

Hi all, sorry to dig up an old thread again, but I am currently testing the new version which should be due beginning december, which will be called V20 (they skipped 13 => 19 altogether, probably to have the version reflect the year it was current.) I can't say all that much, because it's under NDA, but I can say one thing: this version will make it worthwhile! Currently Phase One has an offer that if you upgrade to V12, you will get V20 for free. I would say do it while you can...

I have nothing but praise for the MkII. While the K-1 was already an incredibly good camera, the upgrade makes it even better. IQ is top notch, SR and AF is improved (ok this may be subjective, but for me it feels like it), and there are other things going on (like exposure: I rarely need to dial in exposure compensation.) Add to that the things inherited from K-1 like excellent build quality, top notch ergonomics, very logical behaviour of menu's and such and a space sheet that no other camera currently offers, I can't but feel that the MkII is the most underrated camera currently on the market.

Best camera I have ever had and a well deserved reward!

I tried it last night and it's looking good. One niggle would be that the profile's contrast is quite low. Seems C1 is doing something with the curve before applying the color profile. Will have to experiment a little further...

Script to change lensdata in Capture One

Follow up to my question I asked here...

Capture One is a fantastic piece of software, but it has also its quirks one being that it puts the focal length in the lens exif tag. Despite several questions directed at the friendly people of Phase One, this keeps being the case (also in v112 if I am not mistaken.) Also, if you use an m42, M or A lens, the camera doesn't record the lens, so I thought it fit to write an Apple script where it writes the right lens information. I am not much of a scripter, most I got from bits and pieces found on the net.

Disclaimer: this script has been tested on several Pentax files (both PEF and DNG) and to the best of my believe works just fine. However, it overwrites the original file, so make some preparations and testing before you use it extensively (I use time machine, so I can always back up easy.) Also, this is an Apple script (I don't know how Win people should proceed, but maybe someone else can hop in.) Of course you will have to have ExifTool installed.

Here goes:

Code:

use AppleScript version "2.4" -- Yosemite (10.10) or later

use scripting additions

set DefLens to "SMC Pentax-A 24-50"

set theRespondedLens to the text returned of ¬

(display dialog ¬

"What's the lens used?" default answer DefLens ¬

with icon note buttons {"Cancel", "Continue"} default button "Continue")

## in case there are multiple words in the Lens. But entering nothing will remove this Exif Tag

if 0 < length of theRespondedLens then set theRespondedLens to quoted form of theRespondedLens

set DefAperture to 4

set theRespondedAperture to the text returned of ¬

(display dialog ¬

"What's the aperture value?" default answer DefAperture ¬

with icon note buttons {"Cancel", "Continue"} default button "Continue")

## Entering nothing will remove this Exif Tag from the file

set DefFocalLength to 24

set theRespondedFocalLength to the text returned of ¬

(display dialog ¬

"What's the focal length?" default answer DefFocalLength ¬

with icon note buttons {"Cancel", "Continue"} default button "Continue")

## Entering nothing will remove this Exif Tag from the file

## Entering "0" will result in Capture One ignoring it

tell application "Capture One 11"

set selectedVariants to get selected variants

repeat with i from 1 to number of items in selectedVariants

set this_item to item i of selectedVariants

set theID to id of (parent image of this_item)

## So that I can log it if necessary

set theExifToolCommand to ¬

"/usr/local/bin/exiftool -overwrite_original_in_place -preserve -m " & ¬

" -Lens=" & theRespondedLens & ¬

" -FNumber=" & theRespondedAperture & ¬

" -FocalLength=" & theRespondedFocalLength & ¬

" " & quoted form of theID

tell current application to do shell script theExifToolCommand

## Metadata tags which are removed from the image file will result in Capture One retaining the previous value.

## There is no way to cause Capture One to remove a Metadata tag, once it has loaded it.

reload metadata this_item

end repeat

end tell

Questions: feel free to ask.

I have read this quite a few times, and I am curious as to where this idea comes from. I for one am not certain that this is really the case: for one, Phase One claims to engineer their profiles from up to 800 files made under different conditions. But also, If I take a file from eg. K5, and I apply the profile from X-Pro (or another camera that use the same Sony sensor) I get (very) different Colors, which if the claim would be true wouldn't be the case...

It is a very annoying problem, because if I search for a particular photo I mostly filter with camera lens (because I almost remember what lens I used.) I more or less resolved the issue by keyboarding them with the lens in question. But like you said, it shouldn't be there in the first place and takes almost no time resolving...

Curious as to what problem you are referring to.

So true, these problems shouldn't exist in the first place.

While I mostly agree, you have to bear in mind that the styles can be applied to masks and thus be applied with moderation. Moreover, this way you can also apply various styles to one image (sth LR can't if I am not mistaken.) While I agree that applying one or various styles to an image can create some generic feel to an image which quickly becomes boring, you can use them as a starting point to let your inspiration free.

Just to show what you can do with styles, these images are made with a style I made myself (probably a little overdone, but I wanted the images to reflect the morbid feel of the place.)

There are some really good styles out there (the film and B&W packages are particularly good.)

That said, the style packages are ridiculously priced and one would hope for Phase One to price them a little more sensible. That is the sole reason I haven't purchased any as of yet...

Pricing of Capture One is becoming a little 'are you out of your mind?' and I cannot imagine a lot of new users drawing in, which is a pity because it is an excellent piece of software. IQ is top notch: excellent colors and IQ, very good noise reduction, excellent speed and user experience (been using it more than a year now - I don't even know what Lightroom is anymore...) Having said all this, it isn't without its quirks though: my biggest gripes are a) no full support for Pentax EXIF and no support for K1MkII. For me, I am still contemplating. I will probably skip v12 and directly go to v13 next year.

I use styles whenever I feel that a photo would benefit from it. I haven't (as of yet) purchased any, have developed some of my own. Bit I am thinking of buying some (would love to try the film package...)
