Hopefully this will help -
I got this info from the website listed below, but for anyone who is trying to attach a manual lens to a Pentax dslr, you first must go to the custom function menu and change the settings for "using apeture ring" to "permitted" The default won't allow it and you will just get a flashing "F" on your screen - meaning your camera is confused by the lack of apeture control from the Manual lens since its default setting doesn't recognize what is going on!

Thank you for the reply. Yes, I tried taking it off and reattaching it numerous times to no effect. I have one other auto-focus lens but it's not with me at the moment. I think I will stop by a camera shop on my way home. Everything should still be under warranty, but this is really frustrating.

If anyone could help me with this I would really appreciate it.
I am sure there are two possibilities: either I am an idiot and am missing a simple step, or my lens might be broken.
Today I switched from a manual lens to my standard kit 18-55 lens on my K-X and took a pic or two and shut the camera down. Later I went to take a few more shots and found that the autofocus and zoom were "stuck together" When I attempted to zoom in with the camera, the auto-focus motor whizzed and resisted and then when I half-pressed the shutter to auto-focus the focusing took the zoom with it. It's like the two are now one - meaning I can't zoom in or out using auto-focus.
Am I missing something obvious or do I need to take my lens in?
Any help would be appreciated!

Just paid $40 US for an M-4 including shipping - won't be sure if it was a good deal or not until I actually recieve it. The dealer had a good rep and said the glass was in good shape and from what I could see of the pics it was. Up until now I have only used newer lenses on my k-x so I am a little nervous about my ignorance to all things manual. So glad I found these threads that mention the aperture pin or I would have probably been beyond confused! Also - love the uploaded pics! Really hoping I get a lens that can come close to matching some of those shots! Any tips or advice from someone with experience would be much appreciated!

Nice! I think the point IS to be playing with the DOF > so the bud is meant to distracting...or maybe distracting isn't the best word for it. Anyways, needless to say, I like it!

I just purchased a 44-M4 M42 in what I HOPE to be in good condition on ebay. The seller has a good rep and says the lens is clean and was built in 1990... beyond that I won't know until I see it in person. As I am entirely new to this whole world, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations as for what to do - as in pentax mount vs. 3rd party mount, also - any recommendations for filters?
