Thank you so very much. If that is the case it sounds as though the canon transceivers will work with the Pluto and ax the canon and Pentax shutter release cables are the same the cord that comes with a set of canon transceivers should work. Many, many thanks!

Wondering if anyone in this thread had tried using the Pluto transmitter and receiver for canon with their Pentax gear and If it works. From product info it is unclear if it requires a hot show (which suggests or won’t work because canon and Pentax hotshots differ) or if it plugs into the remote shutter release (which suggests that it will work as canon and Pentax wired shutter release are interchangeable.

Thoughts?

Thanks. I have a k-10, have to check which firmware version it has. Any idea which version didn't support sdm? (Just curious). Guess I can just try doing the conversion and if it fails I can reverse it or send it to you the next time I'm in the US.

I gather you use the k100 super to test lenses as it lacks the ability to drive the Sdm. Is this correct? If so, do you know if there are other camera bodies that can be used to test the screw drive?

Thanks in advance for your response.

Thanks for all the great responses. Interesting no one has their lenses in for repair. I think I'll start with the least invasive strategy- screw tightening/ and progress to converting it to screw drive. Hopefully my 10-17 and da* 17-50 won't pack it in.

Again, many thanks.

DA* 50-135-- to fix or not to fix, that is the question...

Hi fellow Pentaxians,

I was out on a shoot earlier in the month and alas, my DA* 50-135 autofocus didn't work. I hadn't used the lens for a while but it had been fine at last use. When I got home I poked around the forum and saw that my problem was not unique, but my lens had succumbed to a known issue. I read up on a few strategies and mucked about with my lens (rotating focus ring and turning the camera on and off many times and depressing the shutter release many times), and brought the AF back to life. Then I didn't use the lens for a few weeks, and alas, the AF again was gone. Again I brought it back. The routine is getting old though- it takes about half an hour and chews through batteries. So now I have to decide whether or not to keep it as is, keep it and repair it or buy one used. So I'm that context I have some questions:

If you had your lens repaired for this problem, what did it cost and were you happy with the result?
Is there a list anywhere of serial numbers of lenses that had this problem, or a number after which the problem was corrected? (No point in buying a new version of the lens or s used version unless you can check).
My lens is off warranty and I'm wondering if pentax covered any of the cost of off warranty repairs for this issue.
Finally, since the problem seems related to non-use, I wondered if it might resolve by just putting the lens on an old body and setting it to shoot a few times each hour over the course of several days.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for your insights and wisdom.

Remote shutter for K1

I have several wired as well as two different Pentax remotes. I prefer the wired shutter releases because of reliability. The Pentax is a bit pricey, but it turns out the remotes for canon typically work and are both easier to find and also cheaper. I also have a Chinese knock off called an aperture with a nice long cord and it is reliable. Haven't tried them on my k-1 but will in the next few days- I expect them all to work as they have on several prior bodies.

Horribly overexposed images K10 in bright natural light

Thanks for many great comments. Some more of my thoughts follow:

it is remotely possible I could have hit the AE lock by mistake-- but this seems unlikely as in at least 1 case the images after the problem image were same subject matter and not problematic.

I wasn't using any manual settings-- at least not intentionally. As NaClH2O suggests though, the knob could have been between settings though this too seems unlikely as were this the case one would expect the subsequent images to contain the same item in the exif, which it didn't.

Re: user error-
Definitely true that I should have dialed down my iso- the lighting conditions had changed rapidly and I got caught up in shooting (it was a wedding) and didn't immediately adjust the ISO, so at least in the case of the image that was at 1//4000 of a second, that was a contributing factor.

Re: Flash- it wasn't on for any of the images and settings on flash compensation were normal for all settings. On ne of the images I uploaded and at least one from a year ago, it indicated that the flash was suppressed.

re: cats_five question re: does this happen in full auto-- I can't tell from these images and can't necessarily find out now because a) it won't be sunny in beautiful Whistler BC til Monday probably (but we have great skiing at the moment), and b) the problem is very intermittent. However, it does appear from one of the images from a year ago that indeed it did happen in full auto (see below).

I too wondered if part of the problem was what Lowell suggested re: fast lenses not being able to go low enough in ISO settings.

I just checked one of the images that overexposed from a year ago and it was shot at 1/30; f=5.6; iso=100 focal length 300 on a pentax FA 100-300 4.7-5.8 lens. Camera was in auto exposure mode, and exif data suggests flash was compulsory but did not fire, patterned metering, auto white balance, and nothing else odd. Looking at this other image's exif data from a year ago makes me think the issue may be related to firmware or metering (because this lens was at low f stop, camera setting at a low iso). The fact that it did happen in full auto mode with varied lenses (some fast, some not), even in the absence of user error (iso was correctly set on some of the images from this year as well as last year's) makes me think that it is a firmware glitch or metering problem.

Of course I'll welcome any other thoughts. Will try to dig out the additional year old over-exposed images and review exif data on those as well to see if I can discern a pattern....

Horribly overexposed images K10 in bright natural light

Hi- some details about the shots:
all images w/ Pentax FA 50 1.4.
image 1: 1/125; exposure program not defined; f 2.8 iso=100; pattern metering
image 2: 1/4000; aperture priority; f 1.7; iso=400; pattern metering; auto exposure and white balance; normal contrast, saturation & sharpness.
image 3: 1/180; aperture priority; f 2.8 iso=400; pattern metering; auto exposure; manual white balance; scene capture standard, normal contrast, saturation, sharpness

The only difference I could find between the pictures immediately proceeding these or those after which were not problematic are as follows:

in image 1, the exposure program setting in the exif data reads not defined, which seems odd to me;

in one of the images I didn't upload which failed, the white balance was set to manual which is odd since I never alter the white balance settings and I would have thought that the aperture priority and other programs would have over-ridden a manual white balance-- so now I am wondering if there is a bug in the white balance or aperture software.

As near as I can tell on the problematic images, it seems to have defaulted to a manual white balance (though this is only evident in some of the images-- I suspect the dng files, as the exif data on some of the images lacks data re: white balance).

The only settings I altered though while shooting were my aperture and iso-- I left my camera on aperture priority the entire time.

Re: the 16 gig card- it worked for the most part.
Camera appears to have not been using v 1.3 firmware, so I have now done that upgrade.

does anyone know how to copy complete exif data out of either ps cs3 or elements? If so, I can post full exif data for both the dngs and jpgs.

thanks for the comments!

Horribly overexposed images K10 in bright natural light

Greetings: would love some insight on the following:

I have had 2 instances (separated by about 1 year) of the following:

Using K10d in bright, outdoor lighting, horribly over exposed images (see uploaded image).

It has happened with 2 different lenses. First time was hot weather, 2nd time was cold weather.

The 2nd time it occurred, my camera was also incorrectly telling me my (brand new) memory card was full (I put it in another of my pentax bodies and it had space and allowed me to take more photos). Also, I noticed that this time the image file that resulted was much smaller than it should have been. (I was shooting a wedding and using max image size). The dng files appear to be the correct size but the jpgs are smaller than they should be. The uploaded images were shot with a Pentax FA-50 1.4 at 2.8, iso=100 and at iso=400 (same lens etc.)

Any idea what it is? The first time it happened I had just gotten a new 2nd hand lens and thought that may have been the problem. I went back to the shop that sold me the lens, they replaced it and thought maybe my sensor was going. This time I was using a new 16 gig card and a pretty new fast lens. First I thought it was the card but the card seemed to work fine in the other body I was using that day and I've used the lens on other occasions without trouble. I called a camera repair place and they thought it might be a problem with the circuit board writing to the card.

This time I thought maybe it was maybe because I was shooting a fast lens open in bright light, but I checked and it wasn't wide open and it also happened at both 100 and 400.

Any thoughts or insights appreciated.

Lens trade-off questions

Yes, that has been one of my thoughts and indeed is part of how I ended up with so many lenses with overlapping functions.... I find I tend to use the 28-200 as it allows me to avoid lens swaps, but it is heavier than the 2 older lenses, which I tend to think of more as "rucksack" lenses. Might take them out tomorrow on the hill and see what they can deliver before getting rid of them.

Lens trade-off questions

Hi all- thanks for your thoughts- I really appreciate it!

Probably will sell my m50 f/2; my 18-50 (as I'll upgrade it); and probably my 70-210 at least. Probably should shoot my 200 prime more. Will also start trying to acquire some newer primes, probably autofocus. Still on the fence about the 35-70-- as reeftool points out, it is small, light and has a macro-- all things handy for whistler in the summer.

Had been thinking about keeping the 28-200 as I have often used that and am having trouble getting used to having to switch lenses.....

Glad to hear my 100-300 got a good review- I haven't had it that long but have been pleased so far-- I got it before going and I wanted a longer lens-- it is certainly light.

Since no one had anything terrible to say about the autofocus primes, I probably will try to sell one of my manual focus 50s and maybe something else to get a newer autofocus prime (maybe the 35 f/2.4, for example). I suppose if I can pick up one of the 50 1.2s for a decent price I'd do that a sI like a shallow dof.....

One other question: I have been trying to figure out if I should go with the fast sigma or the fast pentax for the upgrade of my 18-55-- bdery uses a sigma-- any other views on this?

Re: my Adaptall
the 200 prime is the adaptall 2 with the A setting. It gets good reviews on the net, it is just so honking big...

Lens trade-off questions

Greetings all,

I have accumulated more lenses than I need and now want to get rid of some in order to acquire more fast lenses and primes, and I am having some trouble figuring out what to get rid of.

I like to keep 2 lens sets-- my good lenses, and a set that I am less concerned about destroying (skiing, traveling to dicey places, shooting in filth.....)

My 'good' lens set consists of:
Pentax, DA, 10-17, 3.5-4.5, Pentax , Da-al, 18-55, 3.5-5.6, To be upgraded to 16-50 f2.8
Pentax, DA* SDM, 50-135, 2.8,
Pentax, FA , 100-300, 4.7-5.8, Not a great lens but only coverage over 200
Tamron, SP-AF, 90 macro, 2.8

My 2nd lens set consists of:
Pentax, SMC-F, 35-70, 3.5-4.5
Pentax, SMC-F, 70-210, 4.5-6
Pentax, FA-IF AL, 28-200, 3.8-5.6

I also have some manual focus primes, including a sears 135 f2.8, an M 50 f/2 and A 50 f/2, as well as an old Tamron adaptall 200 3.5 that is manual.

Here are my questions:
do I get rid of the 28-200 3.8-5.6, OR the SMC-F, 35-70, 3.5-4.5 and 70-210?
are either of the options optically better than the other?

Next question:
how much difference will I see in getting a faster 50 (current one is 2), and what are the tradeoffs involved in going with an auto-focus FA 50 1.4 vs. a K 50 1.2?

I'm going to keep my sears lens, may trade my 50s for something faster in a 50 but can't decide if I should go auto focus or not and if I should work at getting a 1.2 or not.

Also, I have this huge, manual focus tamron adoptall 200 f/3.8. I bought it 2nd hand and haven't used i much but it seems t have decent reviews, so may just keep it though it is a beast.

If this were your lens kit, what would you do? (I am shooting a K7 but also have a K1000 that I sometimes shot hence I don't want to get rid of all my manual focus stuff).

Any thoughts?
