It seems that geosetter also has that same export to kmz capability. I'm not able to use Google Earth here, but at home; it doesn't seem that great - I will try it. I've been using Nifty to create the kmz files from the log files my geotracker creates.

I think it was Geosetter that created that track file (.gst) in its aquisition of the NMEA 183 log file from the gps logger.

It turns out Geosetter has a pretty nice display. It loaded, I totally surmise, a track file that was part of the gps logger output, but apparently, no multitude of points, so all you get is the track of where you wandered and hot spots where you took pictures. Can't be shared though, i guess.

I'm thinking it's the marrying of the gps track log and the images that I'm hung up on, maybe needlessly. I'm getting the hang of getting the gps info into the exif data (via geosetter too), so having that data with the image is a big step.
You just gave me an idea, the gps logger I have allows you to mark a waypoint onto its log file, which is in nmea 183 format (believe me, this was all gibberish to me a couple of days ago, and mostly, still is). I have seen if geosetter translates that marking, so that's something I could try. Still tedious to mark each photo taken, for sure.

I've successfully loaded the images with geo codes in the exif to Flikr. It's similiar, yet different, than Picasa.
As far as uploading kmz files to GoogleMaps, if I put the kmz file on a web site, it seems to import just fine.
I still haven't figured out to, say, have a gps track on a map with different colored points that, when clicked on, would display an image.

I've just now managed to get GPS info from my newly-aquired Amod AGL3080 into some images' EXIF info. I've uploaded the images to PicasaWeb which immediately places it nicely on a map.
What else can be done with these geo-coded images? I've uploaded a kmz track to Bing, and it puts the 10-second interval (I specified) gps positions on a track on a map and then allows you to upload or link images to points on the track. It seems quite a manual process, though.
I've tried uploading kmz (and kml) files to Google (My Maps), but unless I use IE9 (not 8), it doesn't work. Even then, there's no provision for adding images. I guess that's what PicasaWeb is for.
Any other suggestions for using geo-coded images and, perhaps, the gps logs from the Amod AGL3080?
Thanks.

Thanks. I'm scanning in as jpgs of about 200k per snapshot. I think it's set at jpg quality of 80 and 300 dpi. Even at that resolution, it's still tedious. I really doubt if any of today's photo files will outlive the 50 years of these snaps. :)

I've looked around some, and I'll continue to do so, but can someone recommend scanner settings off the top of their head for old color and b&w snaps? I'm not looking for anything too fancy. Tif files look like they'll take up big space, but are they worth it?. I just have a home scanner, HP Photosmart. I don't want to take huge amounts of time waiting either. What's the best compromise?
Thanks.

Ok. I'll try P, but the ISO was set to 200-1600.

The camera is a K-X.
It's consistently down the right side.
Picassa prompts me to update, but it's not that old.
I'm also one firmware version down on the camera.
The jpegs of the same subject looked better than either of the raw formats, in Picassa.

It was very bright and snowy.
I mis-read that previous post about changing the range of the auto-ISO, but wound up finding it myself before popping back on the forum. That abilty to set range is indeed convenient, but I wonder if it will always choose the highest ISO in Auto mode. I found the graininess pretty obvious when viewing at 100%. If I recall, Kodak Tri-ex, or something like that, was considered fast at 400, back in the day.

There's a black vertical stripe on the right hand side of dng images I import into Picassa. None in PEF or JPG. Is this a Picassa thing?

I've only been using my K-X in auto pict mode. Today I took some outdoor pics of a house in bright sunlight and snow. I thought auto mode would lower the ISO speed but it didn't-it set it at 1600. When I looked at the pictures on my laptop at 100%, you could see graininess-something I wouldn't think I'd see on such a bright day. I set the ISO to 200, as an experiment, and the graininess went away. When I set the mode to Landscape, 1600 was chosen again.
I'd still like to use Auto mode and would like to get nice shots. Do I always have to fiddle with the sensitivity setting, or can I set a parameter for Auto mode?
Thanks.

Does it pay for a beginner to shoot in RAW format? Will there be regrets at some time in future when I want to do some post processing? High quality jpegs can be processed some as well, no? I have no fancy processing software and am thinking of just shooting at the high resolution jpeg for the immediate future.
Am I doing good/bad, etc?
Thanks.

I thought it would be handy to have a case for the camera when you're just taking it out by itself, and no othe lenses, etc. I have a k-x and was thinking of a case for the 18-55 zoom lens that came with it. Thanks.
