Dust removal ultrasonic vibrations

Thanks for the sensible replies, I to have come to the conclusion that the dust removal is a poor second to that of Olympus. I will learn to live with it as the rest of the camera is simply wonderful.

The biggest selling point for me was the choice of lenses and the comparative low price when compared to those of the Olympus.

Shopping list will include the rocket blower and a wet clean kit, why are they so expensive? does anybody out there have any advice as to those to avoid?

I came from Olympus cameras to my pentax K5, specifically the e620 and prior to that the 520, and E1. My question to the long standing Pentaxians is this, why did my Olympus dust removal system wipe the floor with what's in my K5. I used those cameras regularly in every conceivable place and never once did I spot dust on my sensor.

I would also point out that I was not obsessive about removal of lenses, switching off, tipping forward changing in a safe environment etc.

This is the second body I have had the original was covered in stains so was replaced, I'm just so fed up with seeing dust spots on the sensor, I have been far more careful with lens removal/replacement than I ever was with my Olympus, it seems to me that the dust removal just doesn't work!

Am I alone in noticing this ? Am I expecting too much? Is the pentax version of this just crap? I hate to say this but I'm regretting my decision to switch brands, I love the K5 and the old SMC glass, the images are wonderful and it really is a stunning camera, I really deliberated long and hard before making the switch and chose because it ticked all my boxes.

Assuming it is the norm what do you recommend for dust removal, I am a complete novice regarding this as to reiterate my Olympus bodies never had a problem with this.

I would also go for the sigma ex 50mm f1.4 as the perfect combination, this is a stunning lens the bokeh is wonderful. I do have to declare an interest though as they are the lenses I already own.

Thank you for the informed reply, the job is likely to be generally non tripod, I would think, the company fabricate all sorts of stuff most of which is large , fences, railings etc..

I may use some flash Metz 58 af 1 but think most will be available light I intend to get shots of the workforce crafting the product so combination of close and mid distance I will also want to use the dof to highlight specific elements.

There maybe occasions were I look at 1:1 but not in the main.

Advice gratefully received, I own the pentax K5 together with 16-45, 50-135, 35 smc f2 and the 50 smc 1.7 plus just acquired the sigma 50mm 1.4. I have decided to take the plunge and buy a macro but cannot make up my mind I've not owned one before so I am new to this area.

I have two in mind the Pentax DA 35 f2.8 macro and the sigma 70mm f2.8 I appreciate they are differing focal lengths but these are the two I will choose between. I have a commercial job coming up which will require the macro capability. It's an engineering company so will have shots at the works and on location at installations.

I own the Metz 58af1 flash does anyone know what the max shutter speed is for use off the camera using wireless transmitters. The tests I have done seem to be 180th but I can only get it to work as a slave. I tried to use the hss mode but the flash refused to fire when used with wireless, when I reverted back to slave mode on the flash it worked, any advice on this flash and usage with the K5 will be gratefully received

Some K-5s shipped with stains on the sensor/AA filter?

Hi there received a replacement from Clifton cameras and checked it this evening and yes the stains are there, however they are around the outer edge of the sensor as opposed to being in the centre as they were on the previous body..Cliftons have been very good and to be fair there has been no quibbling from Johnsons who checked the first camera.

I was told that there were no replacements due in to the country until the 27 Jan so I shall hold off sending this back until at least then. I am disappointed but hopeful it will be sorted by pentax, almost forgot this serial no starts 395, on a separate note how can you find out when it was produced?

I spoke to my dealer Cliftons Cameras today he advised that Pentax were aware of the fault and that it was between a filter and the sensor which would confirm it could not be cleaned off with a sensor clean, my camera is to be sent to Johnsons (I'm in the UK) to check with a loupe to confirm problem after which a replacement will be shipped directly from Belgium to me.

I am assuming that those cameras are ok and no faults have been reported. I have had a serious dent in my decision to buy into the brand as a result of this, I would say that I have been very pleased with what I have been told via my dealer and his service, it's just a disappointment I guess.

As I mentioned previously I jumped from Olympus to Pentax primarily because of the lens selection and of course the K5. I'm just hoping I don't regret this, my investment is over £3000 when I calculate the lenses I have bought to go with this.

I will update any news I have re this saga, and will append the serial number to the link..happy snapping out there.

I have managed to provide a link to a larger image thanks to my son, the highlighted areas are the marks, I have run the sensor clean and none of the marks were picked up! Any comments welcome.

I don't know how to get the image loaded to show it properly, I haven't touched the sensor I don't see the point given the previous posts, I have looked at the marks and then checked the previous images and mine are very similar. They appear to be mini donuts aside from the one in the centre of the frame which resembles a single sperm sorry but it does!

My previous cameras have all been Olympus and I have to say the dust reduction was outstanding, in all the time I used them I never had occasion to notice dust. Am I to assume that the Pentax system is not as good as the Olympus at this?

I will contact the dealer I purchased from when they open for business again, I would also like to point out that I'm not anal about the camera I just feel that given its price and the likelihood of this affecting it's resale value it does need to be sorted. As I mentioned my Olympus gear never had an issue with this, I have owned four starting with the E1.

Just performed the sensor clean and marks are still there, checked at full size the other marks are like donuts, attached image of full frame. Given the previous posts I am quite confident this is not dust, but the staining.

Lowell I completely understand about the issue of artistic merit and also the fact one has to have that talent to see the image dare I say before it appears, previsualisation is what I have always practiced. The point I make is that had I the funds to purchase an M9 with say the leica 50mm noctilux 0.95 I could and would produce images worthy of its beautiful characteristics.

The analogy with A Adams is a not an accurate one, this was a guy who shot on large format for most of the time and occasionally medium format, he was the an exponent of the zone system.. the formats he used were essential in shooting this way. His choice of exposure and then development would allow him to decide where he would place the zones within the scene he viewed.

The kit he used was the other end of the spectrum and from a qualitative perspective blew holes in what you could achieve with any M series or R series camera. The Leica was a camera to use on the move watching, waiting and then capturing the image which you would anticipate occurring. The large format View camera is the opposite, it is slow, methodical and very measured, you still need to be able to previsualise the final picture but the reality is they are different disciplines.

I talk to the trees at Olympus, Ricoh & Me

I attach the above to show what the marvelous compact the ricoh GRD3 can produce, this camera is for me at least the modern day version of the leica rangefinder, I love it, if you want to bother trawling through my blog you will find other examples taken with it .

Paperbag has made some very valid points, I would wholeheartedly agree with him on the analogy with music.

I have been on other sites one in particular springs to mind which is there to worship at the alter of leica, in particular the M9 et al. I do not doubt for one moment that given that kit and some of there gorgeous glass I could produce some wonderful images.

The trouble is most of the folk posting there cant! They buy this exotic kit and for what they produce and where it will be shown (web based sights-Flikr, facebook argh!) and other such accounts they may as well have used a nikon D4o and kit zoom. The other issue which has always made me chuckle is the burgeoning amount of lens babay, holga, diana and you name it type shots that abound on the web. Folk have found this new toy and try to use it to inject something worthwhile into their mundane record shot imagery.

The problem with this approach is that just because it's fuzzy dreamy and whatever else one would like to describe it, it does not necessarily make a worthy image.

I have found this site useful in helping me decide what new and old pentax glass I will buy, what helps me the most is the inclusion of some quality pics to highlight what they are eulogising about.

On my long photographic journey I have used in the past Pentax kit, MX and various lenses 28mm, 50 1.7, and the 100mm and loved every minute of doing so. I then moved onto Nikon before dipping a toe into the digital age with an Olympus E1 with 14-54 lens (superb combination). I still loved film though so purchased a canon A1 with 28, 50 and 85 lenses. Now I have bought the K5 I suspect I will swap the canon for the Pentax MX again..I will definitely post some feedback when I get the kit and will also attach pics or links to.

That's enough of my soap box happy snapping.

I have to say I would agree with a lot of what has been posted, I'm a newbie regarding the Pentax brand and would love good advice regarding the lenses. I'm looking at buying the K% with the kit lenses as it's a no brainer not to, the body on its own is nearly as dear so it makes sense to buy the kit.

That said what are the kit lenses like? I have looked at them and the seem to me at least to be better quality than my Olympus kit lenses. They exude quality and felt very robust, that's not to say the Olympus kit lenses were crap far from it, the difference aside form aperture compared to the expensive 2.8 variety was on tests negligible. I have viewed the forum for info and I'm in a quandary, the 17-70 and the 50-135 look to be the ones I will go for but what about the old stuff the manual K mount as used on the mx, lx et al.particulary the 50mm and the 28mm?

I have moved over to Pentax primarily as I intend to buy the new K5, I have handled it and I am smitten, the shutter is as quiet as a leica, and it feels hewn from granite. My e620 was excellent but struggled in fading light and I feel it's the right time to change.

I shoot mostly portrait and wedding as well as fine art imagery, I also have a blog which showcases some of my work, pop and look it's at http://www.martinyeates.com

Please feel free to give advice as it will be gratefully received.

Hi another question for you knowledgeable folk, how difficult is it using the old lenses K stuff on the K5 or K7, what are the problems doing so? is the focus difficult to achieve? and do you have to set up the camera in some way to make it work, I only ask as I would like to buy a couple of smc lenses one the 50mm 1.7 and the other the 28mm 2.8

regards

Differences between various 18-55mm's?

Any help gratefully received I am intending to purchase the K5 and the two kit lenses as it seems a no brainer to buy them all together given the difference without them is negligible.

What are the kit lenses like? are they good enough to use for paid for work ie portraits weddings etc. Or do I need to invest in the better glass immediately?

The lenses I'm looking at are the 17-70 and the 50-135 Pentax lenses, they seem to fit the bill from a focal length perspective but are they the best bang for buck? what other suggestions do you knowledgeable Pentax forum folk suggest?

Hi there I would appreciate some advice from long term pentax users, I looking to buy into the system and I'm looking at the K5 together with the 17-70mm Pentax lens and the 50-135 Pentax lens, what are the thoughts out there. Are these reasonable pieces of glass? I do portrait/ wedding and fine art photography, any comments gratefully received .
