%*$#^(&! The Lens Release Button Fell Off my K-5!

Its a design flaw for sure, the way how the lens release button is held in place needs to have an extra security in place to prevent the lens button falling off, this has nothing to do with other suppliers. In fact you are able to pull the lens release button out of the body if you wanted it, it's only held by a small pin instead of a button made so that it cant be pull out of the camera body itself.

I chose the K5 because i like how the camera feels, the ergonomics are great and i like the color tone that Pentax cameras produce. But when i finally bought the camera suddenly i became better informed, SDM problems, shutter problems, sensor stains (this problem was handled very well by Pentax though) and more and more people have lens release buttons falling off. Realistically speaking this is not a brand with minor quality problems. I know many here love the Pentax brand and often defend it even thought it has too much shortcomings and they dont treat us customers well.

But i will let my K5 be fixed soon, after that just sell it and jump ship.

no brand is of course perfect, but in my opinion it says a lot when a company manages to ruin little things, SLR's have lens release buttons since the beginning, it is one of the most simple mechanisms and after all those decades it shouldn't have any design flaws.

these type of design errors really want to make me sell my K5 soon. It is so unreliable in terms of build quality.

Now i have a sticky shutter button (no not any fluid came into contact with my K5), the worries about the mirror overrun problem that can occur after a while, then a lens release button that falls of the camera body for many users. I really regret i started using pentax.

Suddenly a sticky shutter release button

Suddenly when i grabbed my camera out of its bag i noticed the shutter release button was acting strange, when i press it and remove my finger from the button, the button is a bit "stuck" and suddenly pops up. This simply happened without reason, no fluids came into contact of my camera at all ever. Next to that i only have around 2500 shutter actuation's.

Is this a known issue?

isnt it also a problem with focus shifting? many lenses shift focus when focusing first on wide open aperture and after that closing the aperture up.

very interesting that chat with the Pentax chat support.

The part about a firmware "update for the issue" it might be nothing, it might be something if they have a small idea what can cause it. I already thought it was something part software, considering the nature how those flops are triggered.

i really dont think that is the case, simply because it happens after pressing every button or use every switch on the camera. The camera isnt constantly in standby mod eafter every action so it doesnt neet to read the status of the mirror and the shutter after every button press, there is something else wrong within the camera i think.

Next to that the discussion about the gears. good quality plastics surpass mediocre metal parts. it simply depends what type of plastic it is. some high quality plastics have less issues with heat and friction making them more durable for this type of application. Next to that the mirror is fairly light too.

the serial numbers are re-used as far as i know, its nto really refurbishing but just replacing the inside of the camera and making sure it is perfectly fine.

refurbs are simply repackaged cameras and sold again.

I think it is a softwware problem somewhere or at least a combination of since every button in the camera would make the mirror flop, while those buttons are not linked in anyway to the mirror assembly but with the CPU that regulates all its functions.

when seeing this i am really suprised, it is such a strange problem, i have fairly good knowledge about electronics and its inner workings, but this is really a strange thing to happen with a camera, you would think it is a software problem, but why would it act up with freshly charged batteries.

i saw the video but it sounded so much like he wanted to talk crap on this subject.

the reason why they ship by boat is simply because it is MUCH cheaper.

Pixels die on cameras anyway, and some come to life after a while too!

this is not proven, next to that many everyday cameras are often used at high attitude without too much problems. I never came across such problem at all. even when being 12 hours up in the air with a camera that i used a bit to take some nice shots.

How common is the K5 Shutter/mirror problem

normally electronic hardware has certain tolerances to survive a little overcurrent or undercurrent. Load on transistors etc. If a camera starts to malfunction because of freshly charged batteries and it wears the camera down, then i am worried that i will eventually happen to every K5. Till now i mostly hear that it happens after 3 or 4 months. But this is the moment where most users got their K5, just right after the changing of camera bodies because of the sensor stains.

Mine still didnt act up but i dont use it as heavily as most users here who made 10 times more shots with it.

normally i can understand such problems, but this type of hardware should have build tolerances within to overcome such problems.

Well i bought the Sigma lens because the Pentax 50mm 1.4 was even more expensive here in holland. Next to that it is simply one of the better 50mm lenses out there. I bought the Pentax body mainly because of the feel of the system, i like how the menu's work, how the camera handles etc. But i do love the limited lenses. Those are truly unique in the current DSLR world in my opinion.

True that the grass is greener on the other side. But i think it is simply disrespect to its customers to ignore all those SDM problems out there with DA* lenses. If Pentax acts the same on those shutter problems like they did with the SDM lens issues then i see dark clouds entering Pentax land.

the problem for me is, and why i started this thread, i want to invest more in this system. Currently have the K5 and only a Sigma 50mm 1.4 lens for it, i want to buy this autumn a nice 31mm limited lens for it. But i am afraid my K5 will act up too and how stable the brand is right now with all the ricoh stuff and such.

First i had the stains, received a replacement, that one had scratches on the sensor, now i have a well working K5 without issues so far. But if i go to Asia later this year i dont want to be stuck with a faulty camera suddenly.

I do now on internet these problems appear bigger than it really is in terms of users affected because more people tend to vent on the internet about the problems and ask for information.

I am certainly worried that this can happen to every K5. why would it just happen to a small batch.

Past weeks more and more posts appeared about random firing shutters on the K5 camera.

Now i am wondering, how common is this problem. Since Pentax doesnt seem to know about this yet.

Will this affect every K5 in time?

Mine doesnt have it yet. I currently use mine since march, fabrication date is februari. But it only has under 2500 actuations

partly yes and partly no, i remember when i was a kid i used the wrong adapter on my super nintendo once, gaving it 1 volt too much power, it killed my nintendo :D

There is some room for deviation ofcourse but it is a full volt more than what the batteries are supposed to provide for the camera.

Do you have access to a battery of another camera brand?

I would test it if it is the same case with other brand if my multimeter wasnt dead.
