those are some great shots of Lower Antelope, i was just out in vegas a couple weeks ago and had a chance to check out the Peter Lik shot in his studio....yours is very good!

Here are a few snaps from the Starlite Car Cruise last night at North Way Community Church in Wexford, PA. This is one of the largest car cruises on the east coast. They host it every single Friday night through the summer. 1,500 cars last night but on certain themed nights (i.e. mustang night, corvette night, etc.) they get many, many more.

all photos taken with the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8! Edited with Totally Rad Actions action sets and CS5.

little lens flare in this one, wish it wasn't there bc i don't really think it adds anything to the photo but oh well...it'll teach me to preview the shot next time!

Thanks! yes, it's hard to argue the build quality on the Nikkor. one of my close friends shoots a D700 & D7000 and has the "holy trinity" of Nikkor lenses, i've used his setup with the 17-55mm f2.8 and it is extremely nice, but worth the $1000+ premium over the Tamron?? that part is up to the user. That lens is also a beast of a piece of glass...pretty heavy. so far i've been happy with my first Tamron purchase, second shooting a wedding this Friday with my Nikonian friend so i'll try to give it a good run during that. i'll post some of the pics if they turn out.

I also bought the sigma 17-50 f/2.8 and it just must not have been a good copy, IQ was lacking and focus was a good bit off...will be returning the Sigma and keeping the Tamron. For the first time in my life, I actually liked the less expensive item! :)

Took along my K-5 and new Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 on a business trip to Vegas this past weekend and went out the one evening to get a few shots and find out how well it performed in low-light and night time situations. I've been pretty happy with the lens so far, here are a few of the pics taken. Sorry to the purists, post processing done in CS5:

Shooting with AF540 on Stroboframe

Hello Allison, since you're a local too, here's the update on how it went....it rained...alot! haha

The ceremony was at Heinz Chapel and the reception was at PPG Aquarium. Believe it or not, after the ceremony we had a break in the weather and it was gorgeous out for about an hour. We did the formals at the church then snuck away to our backup spot (Penn Station) for some fantastic group shots. Since the reception was in-doors there were no issues there.

All-in-all, for my first wedding experience, it went well. I learned a great deal and have several more second shooting experiences coming up, with no plans or interest in tackling a wedding myself anytime soon.

thanks for your post!

thank you everyone for your posts and help! I'm shopping for a Pentax TTL cord now, so i'll be prepared for the next one.

For yesterdays wedding (second shooter) I ended up unbolting the upper half of the stroboframe and removing it. I kept the AF540 mounted on top of the camera, and I velcro'd the cactus trigger to the handle section of the stroboframe. it actually worked out pretty good in a pinch, but i'll still get the TTL cord and do it right.

Thanks again!

K-5 going back to Amazon, I guess

that's pretty much exactly what I did, there were no questions asked by Pentax/CRIS. In fact, i'm almost certain I even included a copy of the Amazon Warehouse Deals receipt in the box with the camera when it was shipped back to CRIS...still no questions asked. The only thing I did differently, was asked Warehouse Deals for an additional discount (because they advertised it as Used-Like New) and they threw me an extra 20% refund on top of an already pretty decent deal.

The Square Trade Warranty I bought additionally was through Amazon and it was $44.99 (a little pricey, i know) and was for open box items valued up to $2000. Now that I have a brand new replacement camera, i'm not sure how that would affect the warranty if i ever needed it. i'm thinking that it should be fine, being as how i never provided square trade with a serial number? i'll cross that bridge if and when.

Quick question about shooting with a AF540 mounted on top of a stroboframe. I'm second shooting my first wedding this weekend and want to use my K-5 mounted on a quick flip frame with my AF540 mounted on top of the frame. I also have a few of the cactus V5 triggers and for the reception was planning on using a lightstand in the corner with a manual Yongnuo-560 with a cactus receiver mounted to it.

my question is...if i want to use the AF540 in P-ttl mode, is the only way to connect it to the K-5 by using a hot-shoe sync cord (which I don't have right now). If I sync it using the in camera wireless, will I have to keep my pop-up flash up the whole time?

additionally, what is everyone else using and how are you using it for this type of setup. i'm mostly interested in what modes is everyone using and on what?

thanks in advance!

Bob

There were no issues in getting my K-5 repaired (it was replaced not repaired) through CRIS, I arranged everything using the online chat/service. No questions were asked whether or not I had a factory warranty.

Sorry for the false hope. With my case, all I did was ask Amazon (through email) for an additional discount and they were the ones that came up with the 20%. Maybe they gave it to me because the starting price of my K-5/lens was higher at $1380? You could try emailing instead of calling...maybe their email support and phone support differ in terms of flexibility.

My turnaround at CRIS was 22 days, door to door. Shipped from Pittsburgh, PA. UPS ground.

Also, I did get a square trade 2 year extended warranty since I saved a good bit on the K5 itself.

Just a thought, but if you want to keep the camera and have the time and patience to send it back to CRIS for the repair, try calling amazon warehouse deals or emailing them and ask for an additional discount....explain that the camera was advertised as used-like new and it is not as advertised.

just FYI, I bought a warehouse deals K-5 about a month and a half ago...received it...had sensor stains...called amazon and they offered an additional 20% discount to me if I agreed to keep the camera...all I had to do was ask! Doesn't hurt to ask, right? I happily obliged, got my 20% refunded to me the next day and shipped it out to CRIS, now I have a new replacement K5 with the kit WR lens, end price was $1104 and my patience with CRIS.

Good Luck!

Chris
