Apparently the later bodies meter better than older ones, but I gave up on DSLR stop-down metering long ago and just use manual - it's easier, faster and provides better results. Other than that there should be no difference except for those from the sensor. My K200D is fitted with a Katzeye screen so manual focusing is easy and much more accurate than with the K3 and standard screen.
Not really - many people use non-Pentax cameras, especially for M42 lenses which are very adaptable. I use a Fujifilm X-M1 because, like your Sony, focus-peaking is a far better experience than with my K3.

A K3 with a relatively fast 300mm prime lens (and maybe a 1.4 teleconverter) would be a decent Birders rig. Given your budget, you will likely need to go with a manual lens, because a decent auto-focus prime will be far too expensive for you.
For 6 years I used a MF 300mm lens (sometimes with a 1.4x) for birds. They can capture some terrific images, although you will not achieve the keeper rate with a MF lens that you would with an AF lens.
I know of no serious birders who shoot with a hand held camera. Heavy telephoto lens that serious birders use puts far too much stress on a camera mount. Plus such rigs are too heavy to hand hold for long periods of time. Also, hand holding (even with IBIS) will induce shake into your bird photos and degrade their IQ.
If you don't care to use a tripod, at least consider using a monopod (with a tilting head) that's attached via a tripod collar to the lens (not the camera).

The SMC-M 40mm is a great lens when paired with any M series body. Almost pocketable; a great travel combination. Not a low light performer. But how often do you go below F2.8? Some samples below. These were probably F5.6-F11. Can't comment on how well it performs at F2.8 |

When you hit share button on flickr, choose BBCode sheet from popup window. You can copy that link directly to message window in PF and it will show the image, with hyperlink to flickr page attached to it, when you send the message.

I usually delete the end of the provided BBCode after the first URL closes. I like to keep only the image and hyperlink attached to it and get rid of the additional info and links after it.
I liked 3rd and 4th shot the most.
