Pentax, autofocus and the future

Let me correct your statement above "My AF works just great for my expectations with inexpensive lenses."

People have very different expectations with there equipment

If you are happy with this then that's okay

I would at least expect to have the focus plane near the front of the target

Especially given that you had the time to pre focus the camera prior to capturing the image

---------- Post added 04-02-2017 at 02:06 PM ----------

And people that don't look for better than average photographs are always quick to display

I for one an always looking for ways to take better photography

I am not in the least interested in taking images like yours ;)

Birds In Flight are not that difficult for a cameras AF unless they are erratic like swallows most birds fly at very consistent speeds

---------- Post added 04-02-2017 at 02:13 PM ----------

Here is my post Please point to the area where I said anything about AF speed

Better AF was the sum of my post and you interject AF speed into that, so maybe your not at 97% as you think ;) seeing as how you derived AF speed from 5 lines that refer to better AF with no mention of AF speed

Tamron 150-600 For Pentax

Show me one comment from this thread where someone said that you can't get excellent results with Pentax gear.

Hello, what this has to do with the need of third party lenses in Pentax mount??? If Tamron/Sigma will return to Pentax, then a K3 or a K1 with a Sigma/Tamron lens can be way cheaper than a K3 or a K1 with a Pentax lens. So, again, forget about your endless debate about Pentax vs others.

Again, what this has to do with the need for third party lenses in Pentax mount??? But since you mention that, you can't deny that for the price you paid for 150-450mm I bought a camera and a lens and I still have 500$ in my pocket, while you have to spend another 1800$ to buy the camera for that lens. Yes, you will have more details in the images taken with K1 given the fact that you have more resolution and no AA filter, but, this advantage is noticeable if you like to pixel peep or if you want to print at the size of an wall. Otherwise... read the little story from bellow.

And if you do the math, a K1 with the Tamron 15-30mm lens, the Tamron 24-70mm lens, the Tamron 70-200mm lens and the Tamron 150-600mm lens would be WAY CHEAPER than a K1 with the Pentax 15-30mm lens, the Pentax 24-70mm lens, the Pentax 70-200mm lens and the Pentax 150-600mm lens. You do realise this, don't you? All I want (and some others too, as you realised by reading some comments from this thread) is to have choices and Sigma/Tamron would give us choices if they choose to come back to Pentax.

Why you're justify your purchases? No one said anything about which system is better than the other. This thread is about the need of third party support for Pentax (not for other brand), 150-600mm lenses included.

If you are a professional photographer then I agree that genuine lenses are the best solution on the short and also on the long term. But again, having support from third party lenses it's a bad thing?

Let me tell you a story since it happened 2 days ago, in my vacation (I'm in the south of Italy now). There was an english guy with 2 kids (12 or 13 years old) at a terace and the kids were fighing about which phone is better as general purpose but also about which is better for taking pictures. Next to them (and also next to me) there was an asian guy (he had an Olympus camera) with his wife. He heard those 2 kids fighting and at some point he said to the kids:
- Excuse me, why do you fighting about?
One of the kids said: - My brother doesn't understand that my phone is better and has a better camera than his phone.
The asian guy said: - Can we make a bet? I will take an image of the harbour with your brother's phone, you take an image with your phone and we ask some random people from the street which one is better. We are not allowed to go 2 feet away from the table. If I win, you make peace with your brother and also you will shake hands. If I lose, I will give you 20 euro.

The kid said OK, and then the asian guy ask the kid's father for permision to procede with the bet and he promised him it won't take more than 5-6 minutes. The father was hilarious, saying: - My wife is shopping, so you can "borrow" the kids for at least 2 hours. :D

Anyway, the asian guy took an image with the harbour by framing the harbour in between 2 little palm trees and the kid took a simple image of the harbour. They asked about 5 random people which image is better. All of them said that the asian guy's image was the better one because of the composition, despite the fact that the difference in IQ was visible between those 2 images (this reminds me about the fact that only us, photographers, are looking at noise, sharp and other technical things; regular people are not interested in technical things). The asian guy took 20 euro out from this wallet and gave it to the kid. And then he said that he has to go, but before that, he gave to the kid an email adress and told him that he is certain that he will send him a better image of the harbour.

The father of the kid ask the asian guy why he gave to his kid 20 euro if the kid lost the bet. The asian guy said:
- Well, look at what we accomplished:
1. You don't have to yell at them anymore to be quite
2. You can drink your beer without seeing them fighting over not important things.
3. If you look at your kid you can see that he is focused on being creative rather than being focused on the phone specs.

That being said, why do I have to spend more money if I love the IQ of the Sigma 150-600mm lens? Am I a professional photographer? No, I'm not. Am I printing my images larger than 80-90cm? No, I'm not. Does my images with Sigma 150-600mm are so bad that I can not show them? No, they are sharp, with good colors (at least in my opinion). :)

So, again, why Sigma and Tamron lenses can't be a good option for Pentax users? Just because there is a Pentax 150-450mm lens on the market?

Let me put it another way. Pentax has the 360 FGZ flash and the 540FGZ flash. What your reaction would be if Metz and Sigma decides that starting from tomorow they will not release anymore in Pentax mount the Metz 44 flash, or the Metz 52 flash, or Metz 58 flash, o Metz 64 flash, or Sigma 610 flash? You will say that you don't care because you have Pentax flashes? If you do say this, what others have to say? I think they would be upset and not because the Pentax flashes aren't good, but because the lack of choices is not as good as you think.

I really don't care the name of the camera or the name of the lens or the name of the flash I use, as long as they give me good result with less money to spend. I'm not married with Canon, Pentax, Sony or whatever... It's about having choices and Sigma/Tamron can have a big impact for Pentaxians if they come back to Pentax.

My same conclution? I do want to see in the next 2 or 3 years Tamron and Sigma coming back to Pentax so that us (the consumers) can have more choices.

You have nice images in terms of composition, but I didn't argued with you regarding composition. So, as I said, don't act like the Pentax expert, especially since neither of your images are taken with DFA 150-450mm or with Sigma/Tamron 150-600mm.. :)

In terms of IQ I'm not seeing anything which can prove me that the IQ of your images is better than the IQ from my images, taken with Sigma lens. Also, composition is subjective in the viewer eyes so I don't expect you to like my images, but in terms of sharpness, noise and details you didn't proved anything.

a-400 is the old manual focus 400/5.6 prime? i paid $775 for my brand new tamron 150-600 zoom, and i could have gotten it in a nikon mount for the same price.

it's apples vs. oranges, you lost with that comparison, in just about every possible way.

agreed, the result in your mind will always be that whatever old lens you have is somehow comparable to a modern af lens...:lol:

yes, we saw what you did do, with your horribly soft dog photos, in the k3 vs. d750 af comparison section of this thread: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/76-non-pentax-cameras-canon-nikon-etc/270...n-d750-32.html

canon? this is a d750 thread, and you have a k3.

try to stay on-topic.

that sounds like what you tried to claim with those terrible dog pics.

and you got spanked soundly by the a7ii af pics and the d750 af pics, on the very next page of that thread: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/76-non-pentax-cameras-canon-nikon-etc/270...n-d750-33.html

Thanks for all your contributions - nothing wrong with a debate - we are all different

@ normhead - firstly you need a chill pill - I've been taking photos since age 21 - professionally then purely as a hobby - I joined the Pentax Forum when I bought the K10D, so I know the forum very well. The NON-PENTAX forum was created purely for togs that bought into another brand - if you have issues with this, mouth off at the site moderators

I know all about damn tripod work ISO 100 aka asa 100 - geez I shot 6x6 Kodachrome 64 slide film and Fuji Velvia for years - I did surf photographer without autofocus, with tripod and no motor drives - so listen mate you not talking to someone that can't tell the difference.

I don't care what anyone says - the D750 shoots cleaner at all ISO than my D7000 - it retains it's dynamic range and colour fidelity up to ISO 8000 or my trained eyes are bullshitting me.

Did you go off at every entry in the Non-Pentax forum re: A7R A7S - Fuji XT1 D700, Canon MKD111.

Ive shot some brilliant pics with my K10D and also my D7000 and I still have those dslr - I've also shot some brilliant photos with my Sony RX100, which I take with me when I mountain bike or rock climb.

Indoor climbing events are very challenging and the go to dslr was the D3s or Canon 5D MK3 or Nikon D700 - all super high clean ISO champions - the D750 fills that role easily as I showed above.

Indoor climbing comps need at least an 5.6 f stop and min 1/250th sec which means ISO 6400 and above - I did this with my D7000 but needed to spend hours in doing noise removal - the D750 eliminated this task. Yay more relax time for me

Any decent tog can get great pics with any camera so you don't need to boast as if you are superior

D7000

Sony RX100

K10D

I could bore you even further images ad nauseum to show you I can do the job at hand - I feel I can only improve with the D750 over the next 6 years

The whole point of the post was for anyone that might be interested in purchasing this dslr and once again ....drum roll... thats why it's in the NON-PENTAX Forum

Interesting image. The eagle and the handler are good, sharp and well positioned. You don't have the RAW only jpeg which is too bad. Always shoot in RAW or RAW + jpeg so you have the best source to start with when you get an image you like. Reworking a jpeg it's extremely limited in what you can do as it falls apart very quickly. The subjects are sharp but a little dull. The sky is washed out and uninteresting, trying to bring some details out in it is really ugly (see second version). I would rework the tones to get a little more detail and color in the subjects and fake a sky (first reworked version). As for the framing I would crop it as I feel there is a little too much empty space. The cropping I have suggested puts them on the diagonal line and close to the rule of thirds points. I've posted it here.

Main technical deficiency was mid range tone too flat so brought that out.
Purposely shifted blue hue to somewhat more red - although perhaps technically not so accurate I think that made it esthetically more "accurate". After all it's a picture of one of the most powerful predators in the skies. Burned in the area around bird a bit to concentrate interest on that and not so much the background. Cloned out the distracting junk on the bottom of frame.

All I wanted was the bird, his sky and "his" man.

DA 50 1.8 - FF compatible?

It is, yes. It's just the optics of the old K/A 1.7 put in to a new AF mount. Though all DA lenses are labelled as APSC, it's been tested to work fine on FF film. There's threads about FF compatibility around if you want to search. Also RiceHigh's Pentax Blog: Compatibility of DA Lenses on Full Frame as a quick reference (obviously someone here keeping it up to date; this was a google result).
