I've just started developing 120 myself. The tape on the very end, I just rip off. I then trim the corners so they don't catch moving around the reel. I've not seen any problems with leaving the tape on during development..
I find it much easier to just push the film onto the reel, instead of ratcheting it on. Just grab the edges and slowly push. Then you don't have to fumble around trying to ratchet and hold the film at the same time. The very last few inches of film I do have to ratchet a bit.
Have fun!

I'm in the same boat. I've been shooting film exclusively for about three months now. My K5 has been relegated to testing lenses and for shots I need to post quick. I use a Pentax ME Super for telephoto and macro and a Zeiss Ikon ZI for street/city/landscapes. I've started developing B&W film at home and scanning with a crappy scanner. Next month I start a film photography class at a community college nearby, so I'll have access to a dark room soon. :)

I looked through the Pentax reviews and it does look like manual focus on this is pretty good. I also found one account that said this lens is optically better than the 'A' 50mm macro. Added benefits of the D-FA over the Zeiss would be filter size (I already have 49mm filters) and autofocus when using the K-5. The downside is the D-FA is plastic and not truly a manual lens, but I'm not sure the Zeiss is worth $778.00 more.

Interesting, I had not considered an auto focus lens. Does anyone know what the manual focus is like on this lens? Most auto focus lenses don't do so well with manual focus, but since this is a macro, maybe it's better in that regard. How does it compare IQ wise to the two lens I originally asked about?
Thanks,

Has anyone shot these two lenses? I know the price is extremely different between the two, but I'm looking for a high quality 50mm close focus lens for my manual film cameras. Thoughts appreciated.
Thanks,

Must be nice cosmetically with no repair needed, other than a CLA. PM me if you've got one for sale.
Thanks,

I'm making a foray into film and decided I should get a light meter. I bought a used Sekonic L-508 which has both incident and spot metering. Messing around with the K-5 and Sekonic, I found the readings didn't really match up. So I took a picture of the blue sky, the histogram was spiked in the center. I then spot metered the sky. I used the compensation function to dial in 3AV to bring the meter in line with the K-5's shutter, ISO and aperture. I used a gray card in the shade to meter off of with the K-5, and then matched those settings on the Sekonic by dialing in a -1AV for the incident reading.
Does this sound like a decent calibration method?
I went around metering things and taking shots with the K-5. I found that if I spot metered off a shaded green bush, I needed to speed up the shutter 2 stops to bring the histogram near center. When metering off a gray cloud, with silver lining, I sped up the shutter a couple stops to bring the histogram to center. The incident meter seemed to get the K-5 in the ballpark when metering in front of a tan shed, while the meter was facing the direction the sun. In shade, facing away from the sun, I generally had to slow the shutter down a couple stops.
Does this sound like the way an accurate light meter works? I've never used one.
Any thoughts appreciated. I realize all this hinges on the K-5 being accurate, and assuming the film cameras will work with the same meter
readout as the K-5. I probably should have just purchased a new model, but good ones are expensive!
Thanks,

A stain on the mirror shouldn't hurt image quality. It's just there to route light to your viewfinder and then gets out of the way when the shutter trips. Is this a used K-5? If so, I'm guessing someone tried to clean the mirror at one point. If it's a new one, I'd send/take it back and get a replacement, if it were mine. Does the stain distract you when looking through the viewfinder?

Hi Sunder,
I've been shooting with a K-5 for the past year and a half and I'm now shifting to film. :) No reflection on the K-5, it's a great camera, just wanted to try something different. Welcome to the forum.

I'm just getting started with film. One of the things I've read is, unlike digital, it's better to expose for shadow detail. I've read that a lot of detail can be pulled back from the overexposed areas on film. My question is, can that same detail be pulled back from a digital scan of a negative? Or does that scan behave like an image out of a digital camera, and if the highlights are blown, they're gone? Or when they talk about pulling back detail in overexposed areas of film, are they only talking about the darkroom print/enlarge process?
Thanks,
