which K-r Colour to choose ?

I have a black K-x, but I sorta wish I got the white. I guess it depends if you want to blend in or stand out. If you're doing lots of street photography, black isn't a bad idea.

My 55-300 also has a much more snug fit than the 18-55. Weird.

Good tips about the super glue and the eBay link. I'll be sure to pick up a few. Thanks!

Pentax K-x Lens Hood and Caps

Hey everyone,

So I got knockoff lens hoods for the DA-L 18-55mm and 55-300mm on eBay a while back. The thing is, they're really loose and don't use the filter threads. Is that how the authentic Pentax lens hoods are? Can I get screw on lens hoods that aren't so flimsy?

Also, I'm wondering if I can get screw on caps for the lens backs rather than the push on kind? Maybe one for the body as well?

Thanks for helping out!

Pentax K-r with DA twin lens kit or Sigma?

I believe that the general rule is the broader the focal range, the less sharp the lens is. I got the 18-55mm and 55-300mm kit with my K-x and have been very satisfied with it. Swapping lenses is something that I've had to deal with, but I do believe it's worth it in the long run.

In terms of manufacturer, I think that Sigma is a very reliable company, with many lenses on par with or even superior to Pentax lenses. In this case, manufacturer shouldn't affect your decision.

Also, be sure to check out the lens reviews for the lenses you mentioned in the PentaxForums database:

Prime Lens Priorities?

Okay, I think I've decided on the FA 50/1.4 (AF) and some MF 100mm or so lens. There seem to be lots of viable options around the $200 mark - I guess I'll just use the lens database and look for good deals down the road.

Dave, thanks for the good info on that Panagor. For everyday use, 2 3/4 turns does seem like a lot, but it would be a great lens for macro use only. I'm thinking maybe something more like that Tamron 90/2.5 you mentioned, or maybe this Makinion 135/2.8. It looks like there are lots of possible options from third party manufacturers.

I guess the question for me comes down to which focal length is autofocus most useful for. I really like that Panagor 90mm and FA 50mm 1.4, but wouldn't a 100mm AF lens be more useful than a 50mm AF lens?

I personally have no idea, just wondering what people think on the matter.

Wow. I need to start off by thanking everyone for the insightful replies. Pentax should thank you all, as this is forum and community is honestly one of the reasons I decided to choose Pentax over Canon, Nikon, etc.

First off, the exposure plot software or something equivalent was a great idea. I split up my library into smart albums in Aperture 3 to find that the large majority of my photos were taken in the 45-55mm range, with quite a few in the 35-45mm range as well. Regrettably, I've just recently been putting the 55-300mm through its paces, so not so many photos in that focal range yet.

I'm still interested in that Vivitar 105mm, but there's no way I'll be able to find one for the forum's average price of $216, right? What's the deal with the lens price increases over the last couple years?

With the 50mms, I'm thinking either the FA 50mm f1.4 or the A 50mm f1.4. I guess it comes down to which I have the cash for.

Hey everyone. I bought a K-x maybe 6 months ago with the 18-55mm and 55-300mm kit. It's been working out great for me, allowing me to cover a wide range of focal lengths for a reasonable price.

But now, I'm interested in picking up some prime lenses to push my creativity and boost image quality. I'm thinking maybe picking up a lens in the 50mm range and another around 100mm. I'd love to have a macro lens, but I guess I could always opt for a Raynox instead.

I'd like to spend no more than $400 if at all possible. I've been thinking something like the A 50mm f1.7 and the Vivitar 105mm f2.5 macro? I'd love some input. The main questions I have are as follows:

Are those lenses good picks? Any suggestions?
Is it worth spending the extra $100 or so to upgrade a lens to its AF equivalent?

Thank you so much in advance!

Screen Protectors

Phone screen protectors are static cling 99% of the time, I believe. That won't leave a residue, and will offer some protection.

I use the GGS screen protector for my K-x, it sells for almost nothing and sticks around the edges of the display -- not on the LCD itself. It's pretty thick, and I don't think it degrades the quality too much. It's just like what JinDesu described. Take your time to apply it, as you only get one shot.

K-x customizing buttons

First off, congratulations on the purchase! I'm sure you'll love it :) I just got my K-x maybe six months ago, and I'm really appreciating all it has to offer for the value.

Like twitch mentioned, the one button that could use some worthwhile changes is the AE-L/AF button. You'll find the option to adjust it under the second custom menu, item 10. I have it set on option 2, which uses the button to autofocus when pressed instead of the shutter button. Super useful if you don't want do deal with AF points. You can simply focus with the AE-F/AF button held down, then release, recompose, and shoot.

I'd also set each wheel click to 1/3 of a stop, set ISO steps to 1/3 of a stop, and expand the ISO range (to reach 12800 and 100). These three settings are items #1, #2, and #3 in the custom menu set at position 1, 2, and 2. These three features just give you greater precision and more options.

I'd also set copyright information: second page of the wrench menu.

Beyond that, it's worth going through the rest of the menu for sure, but I almost feel a bit limited with the button customization on the K-x. The other button that can be totally customized is the green button, but I've been happy with it on its default setting.

Firmware check

I'm aware that on the K-x you check firmware version by holding down the menu button while turning on the camera. I assume it's a similar process for the K-r.

Quick update: the UPS guy came by today but I wasn't home. Hopefully I'll be able to pick up my camera tomorrow! I've decided on the Lowepro Slingshot 102 AW for my camera bag, which should be here by Friday. Looking at bags in person really helped me decide, thanks for all the tips on that.

About the tripod, I'm hoping that my old one will work out for now, but the one Docrwm pointed out above seems like the one to get if I ever need a new tripod. Really reasonably priced too!

iPhone as IR Remote?

Well, excellent news! I emailed the people at L5 Remote, and they responded saying they just came out with an intervalometer app that works alongside their remote! It's called FreezeFrame: FreezeFrame for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store . I just bought the remote for $40 on Amazon, by far the best solution I've heard of for the price.

One quick question -- All Pentax cameras use the same IR signal, right? It says it's compatible with: Optio S50, S5i, SV, and 750Z....

I completely agree. $5 vs $150 for the added feature of a mediocre intervalometer? Absurd. I just found a system today that seems to be the best I've seen if you own an iPhone or iPod Touch. You buy a $40 IR iPhone Adapter ( L5 Remote - Turn your iPhone or iPod Touch into a Universal Remote ) and a free corresponding app ( FreezeFrame for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store ) and you get a pretty solid and very easy to use intervalometer.

iPhone as IR Remote?

So you're saying that these iPhone peripherals doesn't have the right sort of IR to control the K-x alone? If so, I feel like the only way to do this would be to get a developer with one of the peripherals to implement it in their app.

Or an intervalometer? Also, do you think the devices I listed in the original post could be able to communicate with a K-x? After looking into it, it seems like you almost need to be a company to be able to just TEST any iPhone peripheral >_>. So, maybe I could buy an already-produced IR iPhone accessory and build up an app around it?

So, I've had this great idea recently which I feel needs to be shared with the community. I just ordered a Pentax K-x on Monday after much research. The one main downside for me is the lack of an intervalometer.

I've been noticing that there are all these external infrared remotes and matching apps to control TV's and such. Would it be possible to use these same peripherals to trigger a camera shutter? I emailed one developer, who kindly replied about what a great idea it is, but never seemed to implement it. I'd personally much prefer a $50 iPhone peripheral than the gentled at a similar price point. Here are two examples of these devices:

L5 Remote - Turn your iPhone or iPod Touch into a Universal Remote
RedEye mini: take control on the road

What does everyone think? If a developer did implement this, I'm sure it would be a huge hit.

Well, it's all purchased with a total of less than $800. Here's what I ended up getting:

Pentax K-x with 18-55mm and 55-300mm lens from B&H Photo
18-55mm Lens Hood from eBay
55-300mm Lens Hood from eBay
GGS Screen Protector from eBay (like $5 just to see)
La Crosse BC-700 Battery Charger from Amazon
Eneloop AA 8 Pack from Amazon
DSLR Cleaning Kit from Amazon
2 Transcend Class 10 8GB Cards from Newegg

A lot of small purchases from a lot of places, but I am really happy with how it all turned out. The only thing I'm missing is my camera bag, which I will get soon. Thanks to everyone for helping me decide! I really couldn't figure this all out nearly as well without you all. I can't wait for all my packages to arrive! :)

Thanks for the heads up on SD cards. The SanDisk Extreme III cards are a little bit pricey for me, but looks like a good option down the road. Do either of the following options look good? I was planning on going with the Transcend, but I'm worried about its authenticity coming from a smaller seller.

Kingston from B&H http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/715178-REG/Kingston_SD10_8GB_8GB_SDHC_Memory_Card.html

Transcend from Amazon
Amazon.com: Transcend 8GB Class 10 SDHC Card (TS8GSDHC10): Electronics

Are there any other good SD card options? Also, what about the LCD protector I menitoned briefly on the previous page? Is it a necessity?

Wow! I'm blown away with all the great responses. First, thanks to BradH with the link to B&H where I can pick it up for $650. If nothing's cheaper tomorrow, that's what I'll go with. I agree to hold off on a flash and other lenses. So, this is what I'm thinking:

Two Transcend 8GB Class 10 cards (only $.30 more than Class 6!)
A Sanyo Eneloop 8-pack + a nice charger (Maha? La Crosse?)
Would this kit work for cleaning? It has a Lenspen and a Rocket Blower. Amazon.com: Giottos Rocket-Air Blower Professional AA1900 Large + Lenspen Lens Pen Cleaning System + Accessory Kit for Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax and Sony Digital SLR Cameras: Camera & Photo
Also, do I need an LCD protector? Does it scuff up easily? Amazon.com: GGS DSLR LCD Optical Glass Screen Protector for Pentax K-X Digital SLR Cameras: Camera & Photo
I'll head to a camera shop to look for a bag (thanks Ira), though both of jolepp and Docrwm's suggestions seem like great possibilities.
Where could I buy those two Pentax knockoff lens hoods? JJC LH-RBA 52mm - Pentax Accessory Review Database - Flashes, Grips, Camera Bags and JJC LH-RBG 58mm - Pentax Accessory Review Database - Flashes, Grips, Camera Bags
Is there another inexpensive option for lens hoods for the two lenses?

Thank you all for the help! I've been waiting quite a few months to purchase this camera :)

Sorry for the confusion. I forgot to mention that I would be getting a package including both the 18-55mm and the 55-300mm like this: Amazon.com: Pentax K-x 12.4 MP Digital SLR with 2.7-inch LCD and 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL and 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED Lenses (Black): Camera & Photo . I clarified the original post.

I have decided on getting the K-x with the 18-55mm and the 55-300mm, as this seems to be the group consensus and isn't much more expensive than the other options. First of all, has anyone spotted some Cyber Monday deals or discounts on it? I'm hoping to get it at $650, and the cheapest I can currently find is $700.

All the equipment I currently have is a cheap Radioshack rechargeable battery kit, a 2GB cheap Sandisk SD card, and an older tripod. My question is: what is most vital to get right away, and what can I wait on? Here's what I'm thinking:

Flash: Maybe the Pentax AF360FGZ? I don't have ANY experience with external flashes, is this a fine unit to start with? Something cheaper with similar abilities would be great.
Bag: Really no idea with so many options. I'd want to carry 2-3 lenses (maybe the 2 kit lenses and a prime) and a flash along with the body.
Lenses: I was thinking maybe a 50mm prime for cheap off of eBay? Nothing too expensive yet. Which one should I go for?
SD Card: It seems like many people have like 10 individual SD Cards. Would one 8GB Class 10 be fine? Recommendations?
Batteries: Eneloops? Is there a Eneloop kit with a charger too? Or get a separate charger?
Cleaning: Would a single lens pen clean all I need? Is a Rocket Blower necessary?
Lens Hood: I think I'm going to stay away from the filter route. Do the kit lenses come with caps and hoods? I feel intimidated by this part, it seems like it would be easy to buy the wrong one.

I'm sorry about all the questions, don't feel like you need to answer them all. Thanks! :)

Hi all!

I've been lurking/reading this forum for quite a few months, and I still don't have my Pentax K-x (hopefully I'll get it on Cyber Monday tomorrow!). I'm currently using a Canon Powershot S2 IS, and am looking to upgrade. Decided to finally join, as the content and helpfulness on this forum seems really superb.

See you around!
