Sigma representatives in South Africa

I bought a Sigma 100-300mm f4 from another PF member but it arrived with the rear lens cap off and damage to the aperture mechanism which may have been from shipping (it had also been used on a NEX). It was effectively a wide-open F4 lens but according to all the reviews this was not a problem for the lens.

I finally sent the lens in to Tudortech who are the South African agents for Sigma (Belkin, Olympus and a few others) to see if it could be repaired. They said that if parts were required they would probably not be able to repair it. I was not holding out much hope as the lens was discontinued several years ago. The lens was handed in at the Johannesburg office, couriered to Cape Town where they replaced the kinked spring, and freed up the aperture blades. It was then couriered back to Johannesburg. The whole process took a week exactly. Unfortunately there was now a problem with the aperture not opening up fully so it went back again and they fixed that. The lens now has a working aperture, but reads a 1/2 stop lower than it should on manual which I can live with. It should be ok on Auto. I now have a fully functioning stunning zoom lens still at a good price including the repair costs.

I was totally amazed at the swift and reasonably priced service from Tudortech. Many thanks to Palesa, Carrie-Ann and Greg at Tudortech. It's nice to know that there are companies out there who deliver good service, and especially for us Pentax users.

I am probably going to sound like a complete idiot, but I dont see what the big "lens-issue" is that needs to be solved. There are hundreds of Pentax lenses out there designed for full-frame. The lens database is full of them! Any older Pentax shooter already has a full set of lenses ready to go! And when FF does come along, the prices of all of the existing FA's and earlier lenses out there are going to go through the roof. I'll probably able to fund a new FF body from selling spare lenses. The only issue they will have to address might be modernising the focusing systems and applying updated coatings, but the basic optical designs already exist.

Or am I shaking the wrong end of the stick here?

I went to the annual Photo and Film Expo in Johannesburg yesterday. The Pentax stand was reasonably well signposted with big Pentax and Ricoh banners. The only new items missing from Photokino were the K5IIs and the DA560. They had a Q, X5's WG-2's (in a fish tank), K5II, K30's, 645D, K01, various lenses and the full range of binoculars on display. The guys manning the stand were quite busy selling as well. One couple bought his and hers WG-2's, someone else picked up a K30 and a lens. That was in the 5 minutes that I was at the stand. It was nice to see that the stand was visited by lots of people.

Sigma has a nice stand with pretty much every lens that they make available to view. The green monster (200-500 F2.8) was also there. The Sigma guy was very helpful. Nikon had almost exactly the same stand as last year (I think they may have taken the exact same display cases out again). I almost didn't find Canon. Sorry if it sounds like I'm bashing the competition.

Adobe and Topaz were there pushing their latest tricks. There were also lots of stands selling accessories. Backpacks have now reached South Africa in a big way.

Overall I was a bit underwhelmed by the show, but it was too similar to last year. At least Pentax had mostly new stuff on display and visitors weren't flooded with heaps of kit to look at.

Sorry about the quality of the pics, they were taken with my Blackberry.
