In the brave new-ish world of mirrorless, we don't have a required flapping space: just for lens registration. See post #31 above. (I do like my K-01.)
The whole point of the (optional) crop lines is so those who chose to do so, may satisfy an urge for a more deliberate style of photography. Everyone else no longer need concern themselves with portait vs landscape orientation until the 'post'.
Seems like a significant enhancement.

As the CaNikony crowd catch up with Pentax's K-01 mirrorless camera body, the largest stumbling block I see to my suggestion is on the verge of going away: the space required for the mirror to flip. So now in a K-mount (mirrorless) body, we can fit a sensor that will cover the entire image circle, and permit selective cropping at capture & in-camera. Such a sensor does exist: that from the 645z, at 44x33mm.

No joke. I've just rung Camera Exchange, and it's legit: bought at a good price. Apparently a "very clean" example, and separately priced 45 and 75mm lenses. These guys have been in the business for decades, and are an invaluable resource to any working photographer in the state. As some larger private studios clear out their "older" gear, some good deals can often be found.

I love doing these composite images. That one is quite effective, & has interesting overlaps.
With multiple exposure, you're building up the exposure of the final (single) frame in camera. It's a different look, with a "ghostly look", unless using cleverly deployed gobos. Here are some of my multiple exposures.
Multiple exposures in-camera, have been available since the *istD, which had a button for the purpose: bliss!

A number of years ago, there was a shop in Germany with a 2000mm reflex for sale at $5k. I made a lower offer, but never heard back.
Today, I might make an offer, but even at $11k, they're dreaming.
The 1000mm reflex is great fun, however.

For what it's worth, the same effect (turning on backlighting for the back LCD display) occurs when the "Button Customisation | AF Button" is set to "AF2" ("back button focus"). Except now lifting my finger OFF either the shutter release, or the AF will turn on the LCD backlight.
Strangely, many of the other buttons, which case use of the LCD, will cancel the backlight. This includes (re-)play, live view, movie, info, menu, and the 4-way pad (when not moving the focus point).
Twirling the mode dial, and using the optical DoF preview also will cancel the backlight.
I'll put up with this annoying behaviour for a week or so, at most.

I've sold my K-7, but it works as the other Pentax dSLR cameras, from the K10D on.
The ISO is, as you note, carried across all (bar one) mode dial settings, such that changing the mode dial does not adjust the ISO.
The sensitivity mode, Sv, is separate from the rest, however, and the ISO set here is maintained until you next use that mode.

Yes, it would be cropping the sensor. But with forethought and intent, instead of random post-hoc hacking away at the capture. Thus the idea of gently glowing frame lines in the viewfinder, indicating the selected capture geometry.
Note too, that the capture areas are (in square mm) 864 (3:2), 884 (4:3), 800 (5:4) and 900 (1:1). So we're not compromising on image quality.
Note too, some of the comments in other threads, bemoaning issues of bloated file size with a 50Mpx sensor. With a selectable aspect ratio, the photographer chooses their preferred geometry, and the camera only need retain those specified data points. So, the rate of reading the sensor is preserved, and file size is contained.

Here's a truly "unique selling point" for Pentax.
Over in another thread here there was an oblique reference to the aspect ratio.
Wouldn't it be exciting to be able to choose the aspect ratio?
I'd love to be able to not only capture the conventional 135 ratio of 3:2, but 4:3, 5:4, and especially 1:1. Thus: 36x24, 34x26, 32x25, and 30x30. (All in millimetres, rounded down.)
To achieve this, the viewfinder should cover the entire image circle, with superimposed frame lines for the current crop. We'd even have some of the 'rangefinder' benefit of seeing things coming into the frame lines.
This would truly set Pentax apart from the other camera manufacturers.
Down side? Well the petal-shaped lens hood would be less relevant, and the conical section preferred.

A fascinating time.
The quality from Pentax gear has, in my experience, been always satisfactory. A move into the medium format space guaranteed any defects are assuredly down to me. The APS-C *istD, K-01, & K-3 all "draw" well, & support my K-mount glass.
It seems the issues with 36x24 come down to a 2/3 change in effective focal length, back to the days of "plastic sensors" in convenient strips of 36.
The 43 will again come into it's own.

Here's my entry to the thread "over there".
Lots of good suggestions in this thread.
I'm _very_ keen to see the following features:
- ability to save & load camera settings to/from named file on memory card;
- direct setting via dials of aperture/shutter/sensitivity/EV+/-, each of these four dials to have an "A" setting, thus "doing away" with the mode dial;
- an excellent viewfinder with 100% coverage;
- no anti-aliasing filter (as per K-3);
- compact size;
- SR;
- weather sealed;
- multiple exposure facility;
- "quick shift" gear inside the body, thus providing this very useful feature on the three FA Limited lenses;
- photographer's choice of "crop mode", not determined by lens type.
Many of these items have been mainstays of Pentax dSLR cameras since the *istD, so I look forward to their inclusion in this new 36x24mm-sized sensor body.

In spite of my experience, I'd suggest you jump into a course with full enthusiasm.
Frequent discussion of your, & other student's, photos is invaluable. While there are not really any 'right' or 'wrong' images, it comes down to being able to justify what (& more importantly) why you've done what you did.
The diploma course I started part-time (one day a week), was great fun. There was much discussion of our photos, & exposure to a variety of techniques. Some new to me, some a 'refresher'. Mine was the only Pentax camera in the college, with ~2/3 Canon, ~1/3 Nikon. It would be a good idea to know your own camera's settings, since the instructors are probably briefed on just the two larger systems.
Now, you're likely wondering about my reservation, above. In the second year, I ended up with an almost entirely different group, which was not nearly as much fun. We then had one senior instructor repeatedly 'putting down' Nikon, while boosting Canon. I thought this was bad form: essentially any current camera is 'good enough' nowadays. Anyway, all this seriously put me off, & that was that. [Was I being too sensitive? Maybe. But that's just me.]

I wasn't going to buy the K-3. Simply stick with my *istD, K-01 & assorted lenses. But now I have a K-3, I'm very pleased. It is a beaut camera, & my one is behaving itself, with none of the reported glitches. (Unlike my non-Pentax camera -- but that's an entirely different story.)
Note that I'm more interested in the photo than pixel peeping.

All fixed. Good as new.
Well, it is new. I contacted the very helpful people at C.R.Kennedy, the long-time Pentax agents here in Oz (Australia), & they agreed to replace the whole 'mode dial' assembly (dial & spindle) under warranty. That involved a couple of days, & removing the top plate of the body. Apparently there have been fewer than a handful of reported mode dial losses here.
I've always had good experience with C.R.Kennedy, dating from my specially marked "50 years in Australia" *istD.

After eight months with my K-3, I'm very pleased. I've not experienced the 'mirror flap' issue, and have kept up to date with the firmware (currently v1.11).
I would likely sell the K-3 to buy a 36x24mm sensor body to attach to the 'three amigos' (31, 43, 77), but the "full frame" debate finished four-and-a-half years ago with the 645D, and now the 645z re-affirms that situation.

I too, picked "ignore" though the above more accurately sums up my position.
Many of the requested features for the K-01 look as if they are simply firmware changes. It would be beaut for (all) the camera companies to "open source" the firmware on cameras where updates have ceased.

Yes, me.
The in-camera post processing is, or at least should be, just using the JPEG routines already present for the original capture. Anyway, with all the production of electronic gizmos, the cost of memory is relatively negligible.
Otherwise, as a still image person, I'm happy to see the movie feature set improved as specified above, & elsewhere on Pentax Forums.

Sounds like fun.
Despite the LensRentals blog comments, I'd still get involved. My Pentax gear has survived many hours in a working underground coal mine (high humidity), sand storms in North Africa (low humidity), to name but two. Other than the *istD, the bodies have been sealed, though my lenses are not WR. The 14/2.8 and 35/2.8 macro lenses, in particular, have survived the bulk of these exposures.
