If I was in your position I would get a K-30. I have a K20D myself and still use it! But the ISO performance and AF are quite a bit long in the tooth. Between the K20D and K-30 I had a K-r, which is a lovely camera by the way. I discovered that life is possible without the top LCD, because of the (better) status display on the main screen. What I missed more was the 2nd wheel. The missing top LCD (and the body build material) are the only big differences between the K-30 and K-5. The rest is very similar though, while in the end the K-30 has the upper edge IMO.

I still think the ports (card door and A/V port on the opposite side) are most problematic, much more than the lens can be. In case of exposure to heavy rain your hands get wet and while you are shooting and holding the main grip (or the left side grip) you are pumping water with some pressure into the grip area.
In the past I have almost submerged K20D into sea water (with DA35 Ltd. attached), but no issue whatsoever occured, except that I had to clean the lens and camera from ground up later. I believe the seals on K20D (and on K-5) have better WR capabilities than the K-30 has. This is just an assumption.

When using fast primes DOF can get pretty thin and focus needs to be nailed down. I would suggest you make a test in a controlled environment with a kitlens shooting a printed focus-test-sheet. Try different light sources (hard daylight, shadow, dusk, electric light etc...) and different WB settings. Also try Live-View and contrast detect AF (instead of phase detect AF).
FF or BF can result from small tolerances in the lens assembling process, that's why the AF-fine adjust is there, to compensate that. If your camera frontfocuses beyond the internal correction range I would complain and return it.
Cheers,

I would suggest you get her a Sony NEX. You will make herself and yourself happier.

Apparently you can't buy a flawless K-r in U.S. because Pentax choose to sell only B-ware with several minor issues to U.S. customers - it's a obvious conspiracy.
If you want a good K-r you ought to travel to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia/E.U. There is a small shop on Dunajska cesta 57, called Foto Beseničar.
:) ;) :p

You have two AF methods in Live View. What you describe is phase-AF. I recommend using contrast-detect AF since there is no mirror flap and no black out of the LCD. Contrast-detect AF is smooth as silk and one of the major improvements over the previous Pentax cameras.
Go to the capture menu/chapter 3. Scroll down for Live-View. Pick the first setting "AF-Method" and choose a circle symbol half dark. Now you switched to contrast-detect AF.

What is your definition of "dusk"? All AF systems have their limits...
There have been some reports about frontfocus in tungsten light with contrast-detect AF method. Some of those can be solved with focus fine correction function. But phase-AF (which works during LV) works extremely well and accurate with all types of low light. Onboard AF assist light works good only about 3-4 meters.
Go to the capture menu/chapter 3. Scroll down for Live-View. Pick the first setting "AF-Method" and choose a circle symbol half dark. This should work if there is enough contrast in the scene. You can also move around the focus point while in LV by using the four way controller. Hope this helps.
