Not sure the manual gives the exact details of how Phase Detection works which is what I think he was referring to, it's a bit too much physics for most people :D

I really do understand. When my K-r came down with the dreaded e-dial affliction I felt the same way. However in that situation I found the repair was something I could do to restore full functionality without jeopardizing my remaining warranty.

It is probably pretty easy to remove the water from your LCD using one of the desiccant packages made for just that purpose - however, you your case, that won't restore full functionality; meaning weather resistance. I really don't think you have a choice but to either send the camera in for repair, or use the camera as a non-WR unit. If you make the latter choice, I would hope you could avoid on going complaint about the lack of WR. I know I would have a tough time with that, so unless I had something imminent, the camera would go in for service.

I had a K20D which was used in heavy rain as well as a K7 and a K5 which was used in dusty environments and rain too. All the seals worked. I just bought the K30 last week and waiting for rain to test it under.

Get your K30 replaced as it should be under warranty.

I'm getting close to year 3 with my Kr and it still surprises me with what it (and myself :)) are capable of. Granted, my experience with DSLR's was very limited to begin with, and this is my first SLR, but I could not ask for a better beginner camera that packs so much in it. Sent it for e-dial warranty once, that's my only gripe. Oh, and my FA LTD's FF in tungsten, but my other lenses are fine for some reason.

I will replace this Kr with a K5IV or whatever the flavour will be, but the Kr is a keeper. Perfect for walking the streets with a 43 Ltd.

Can I recommend a used/old stock Kr? Yes and no. Locally I have seen them for 300-400$... I would say save some $ and get a used K30 in blue :)

My first DSLR was a K-r. I still have it, never had to take it back, even though the built-in flash doesn't work anymore (don't know why). At first, the camera offered more than I could get out of it, but now I know it pretty well. So the question is, what is more important - skill or tools? Because sometimes people complement my photos by saying "you must have a great camera!" But its not just the camera. The photographer is the most important, knowledge and experience, and even creativity. With the same camera I took great photos and really poor photos.
On the other hand, after I got a K-01, I noticed that my photos do look better, because it has a better sensor. So I guess the camera is important, too.

To summarize, once you have beaten your ignorance, once you have some knowledge and skills and experience, then it makes sense to get a better camera, so you can get the most out of it. I think the K-r is a great low to mid tier DSLR, especially for learning how to use DSLRs. But technology just keeps improving so a newer camera will allow you to take better photos, simply by recording more data, by having better noise performance, etc.
But on these forums we often get people who blame their gear for everything, and then it turns out that actually they are just using it wrong.

K30 nitpicks.

Please do not give our friend a hard time about the manual.

I noticed this problem a few years back, and started to look at historic camera manuals. Old ones, e.g. Zeiss Ikon Contessa (1950s), Spotmatic and MX from Pentax were written around what the systems and software engineers call the 'use case' concept. You want to do this, here is the set of all the instructions to make that task happen. And the manual is written with a logical page 1, start reading and stop when you have found out how to do all the things you want to do.

Modern manuals are written like the computer help menu, as a reference guide. If you do not know the magic word the maker chose to call a feature you have no hope of finding the information. And the information is written around describing the buttons and what they do, but not connecting those possibilities to kinds of action one might want to do, resulting in fragmentary presentation of factoids.

This has become popular in all manuals for all things now. My new car manual is so badly written (the car is German) that it is vitually impossible to use, especially in a hurry, such as 'why will the lights not turn on or turn off the way I expect.'

Old manuals were good for someone starting out, new manuals are only useful for people who are upgrading fromthe previous model or, at worst, have a friend with one who is willing to act as tutor. Is this a conspiracy to get the populace to only buy popoular brands - you can get the real user guide from your friend who already has one?

K-30 shutter button

The difference from the DL to the K30's shutter buttons is night and day. The DL you practically stick your finger into the camera about 1/8th of an inch. The K30 IS more sensitive, and the travel is perhaps 1/16th ( measurements are guesses BTW, and meant only for comparisons ). You need quite a bit more force to trigger the DL than the K30, thus are more likely to make the camera move when you shoot, as I stated earlier. If you think it's overly sensitive, bring it to a camera shop and see what they think. My guess is you're so used to "mashing down" the button on the DL that you're putting too much initial pressure on your K30. A light touch should get things going, then a bit more pressure to fire. There is SOME resistance at the 1/2 way point, but nothing like the DL. Good Luck and Good Shooting!

Pentax K30 -Out and About -A user review

Thoughts and Conclusion

In a market where tech is expected to move fast and 'improve' every quarter.
Where megapixels keeps spiraling up and handphone whizbang is added to cameras as new 'needs for the photographer'.
With manufacturers scrambling to define themselves from the competition in this way.
Its good to see a camera like the K30 go somewhat the other way.

A camera rooted in fundamentals.
Fundamentals of what it takes to help a photographer take photos and do imaging.
Features/handling that help the photographer use a camera fast and efficiently, in all conditions and at a good price.

Its good to see that entry level does not mean entry level features/handling.

Other comments :

There's often the query

"Old K5 or a K30? They are about the same price now"
My take :
K30 is the better camera in most ways. (MHO)
The old K5 is better in build (mag alloy body); Top LCD panel; timer and IR bracketing function; FPS.
So choose the camera with the feature and handling that you need.

"K01 or K30? K01 is such a steal right now"
Again no straight answer; either one is ok depending on budget and how the user will need one feature/handing over another.
The K30 is the better camera for sure.
It also shoots SLR style, which I think is more stable than the arms out style of a LCD MILC like the K01.
The K01 is better only for faster shutter reaction in LV as there is no mirror mechanism to take care of.
For the user who can do away with SLR/viewfinder style shooting, the K01 is a viable and really cheap option to great IQ.

"K30 or the new K5IIs?"
I can't say that I'm very qualified to say too much, since I've only handled the K5IIs a few times.
But IMO, the K5IIs is a better camera with its -3eV low light focus capability that is real fast and the very sharp o/p without the AA filter on the sensor.
It also has the features/build that the older K5 has over the K30 as mentioned above.
But if one needs the focus peaking in a DSLR, then the K30 is the one to consider. (the K5 is very good too with a good focusing screen for manual focus; so it depends on what the user prefers)

I understand you are very enthusiastic and I'll be kind to you - you want to learn which is great and you understand it takes time, which is even greater! You're changing too much, too often to really get an understanding for what the effect is. SLOW DOWN!!!! :)

First of all, strange as it may sound: put down the camera after you've take it of M-mode and don't touch it! Read the manual, it is an absolute essential thing that you don't go blundering into the menu changing stuff left and right without even understanding what you're doing. Really, I mean it in the nicest possible way.

Then take on one thing for a week, let's say focus modes. Set your camera to P-mode so there's one thing less to worry about: the exposure. You've =been using M(anual) mode until now and it shows. P-mode will make a better selection of settings for now than you are capable of until you start understanding lens qualities and pitfalls.

Spend a week on the different focus modes, shooting a few different subjects and trying to get the camera to focus on different parts of the image. Use AF.S first with center point, then with different points you select and lastly with autopoint select. Then do all of that again in AF.C.

Have a look at the EXIF data in the image files to understand what the settings were, you'll see quick enough what worked and what didn't. Use an exif-viewer or your favorite image editor. Photome and Irfanview are both free downloads that offer an insight into the information hidden in the files.

Then, in a new week, explore the lightmeter settings, spot, area and center emphasized. Again, look at the exif to see what seemingly worked in which situation. You'll find that what worked on a landscape didn't necessarily worked on a portrait or closeup and vice-versa.

Work your way through the different programmed smartstuff in your camera but keep track of what you did and go about it methodically until you know your camera's most effective settings. Stick to those settings for a few months and turn to composition, subject matter, processing etc. before you move on.

I wish you good learning and please do not drive yourself crazy - we all went through this and there is a way out! GOOD LUCK! ;)

Problems with K30 AF ?

Aha. So its probably not ISO or shutter speed problems. I still recommend a firmware upgrade because for some cameras in the past some AF improvements came with firmware updates.
Are we defensive? I would say that its possible, certainly. Thing is, we sometimes get people who are trying to blame the gear because their snapshots don't look like Ansel Adams photos, and often they turn it into "I should have gone with a better brand!" type argument. Sorry about that. But generally we try to give full, exhaustive answers to help the users :)
Oh and btw, there is a photo sample gallery on this forum, where you can look for photos taken with the same camera and lens that you have. Maybe that can help you out?

remember that having a bunch of great nice MF lenses compensates for the lesser IQ, at least for me.
And only being in videography for the 1st year, the K01 has already teached me a lot.

Personally, i'm not in a hurry to switch systems as videography is about so much more than just the IQ you get from a camera.

But you are right, there is a moment one needs to stop complaining and decide... my k01 will still be a great B-cam then.

This brought a slightly amused smirk into my face. ;)
I am a "mature" enough user to have started shooting with film, but also shooting video with, well, analogue video. Don't go thinking that shooting video and "mature" age have anything significant to do with each other. That's unnecessary and inaccurate ageism. :D

I believe the Pentax gear itself has more to do with it. All current camera brands have both "mature" and "immature" users, but some camera brands have added better video capabilities into their products than Pentax.

Some Pentax cameras are quite capable of delivering nice video footage in the right hands but, the majority of video enthusiasts are likely to use another brand these days. Sony, Panasonic and Canon come to mind, for example. Nevertheless, we don't really know what Ricoh/Pentax is up to, so things could change in the near future.

It's also good to keep in mind that when it comes to the real video enthusiasts, the actual shooting of the video is just one part of the job. Almost as much, if not much more, happens after the actual shooting. Also the amount of the footage shot is less relevant than the content of the footage, and the quality of it.
Only the young and clueless hipster kids shoot a lot and share their clips directly from camera to the web. ;)

Is modern photography fairly well idiot proofed?

To throw some armchair psychoanalyzing at you that might be completely off-base, you seem to have that competitive instinct where you think everything in life is a competition and if you can't be the best (or at least stand out) or "the idiots" are doing better than they deserve (cause they're idiots) then it irks you to no end. None of which has to do with enjoying an activity for its own sake. (Do you also stop liking songs/music that you used to once they become too popular, and that kind of thing?)

If so, you've got to put in a real effort to become not just decent/competent (since the auto controls are catching up to you), but to become an absolute master and then you can still be king of the hill, or at least clearly superior to the idiots. If photography is your business, and the idiots are encroaching upon it, that might be your only option.

OR, you can learn to enjoy it for its own sake, whatever your level, and not worry about what the idiots are doing.

OR, give it up and take up rock-climbing or something (or rock-climbing photography) where no novice can compete without killing themselves...

The fact of the matter is that anything created by man is, by nature, imperfect. This includes the systems that create the products themselves (i.e. factories that create cameras). By realizing this, the ensuing understanding is that, unfortunately, you probably have a poorly finished end-product (read=compromised, less-then-originally-engineered sealing). Cars, computers, batteries, etc are recalled every year - it sucks, but it happens and is just a fact of life that you will ultimately have to come to terms with. But while that is true, I can assert that there is enough evidence to counter any claims of less-than-satisfactory weather sealing capabilities regarding Pentax products.

I can personally assure you that the weather sealing claims are very real, and in my experience are not touted enough. I have emailed Pentax (to no response, unfortunately) stating that I believe they need to do more to advertise the weather sealing claims, and the most legitimate way to do this is by using the internationally recognized IP Codes (see here for a much more detailed explanation). These are industry standard, regardless of the industry involved, and are also the standards used for evaluating critical pieces of gear/equipment for military usage (as the military demands the highest levels of durability, as one would expect). Using these codes, I have personally assessed the weather sealed bodies (I own a K-5 and K-7) when combined with a WR/AW/DA* lens to be, at a minimum, IP55W. AW and DA* will have a higher degree of sealing against water and dust, but the difference between 4 and 5 is enough that I would categorize WR as 5 (just barely) as well. What this means is:
  • IP - Ingress Protection Rating, sometimes also interpreted as International Protection Rating (mandatory prefix to coding)

  • 5 - Dust Protected - Ingress of dust is not entirely prevented, but it must not enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment; complete protection against contact

  • 5 - Water Jets - Water projected by a nozzle (6.3mm) against enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.
    • Test duration: at least 3 minutes

    • Water volume: 12.5 litres per minute

    • Pressure: 30 kPa at distance of 3m

  • W - Weather Conditions

*Disclaimer: I have not personally had access to a "6.3mm, 12.5 L/m, 30 kPa nozzle," however I believe that a highly pressurized showerhead more than suffices for this.

Here is a testimonial from another Pentax user (who luckily has insider access somehow...lucky bastard...)

The intent behind the aforementioned email to Pentax is that it is my personal opinion that Pentax should lead the industry by publishing their confidence in their equipment as rated to an internationally recognized standard. This would make Pentax the very first camera company to do so for DSLR's, and would help further the credibility of Pentax's purported claims (which still are dubious at best to many). As a 100% private user (i.e. not paid by Pentax in anyway), I stand by the above standard (IP55W), and all experiences have been through personally owned cameras.

I believe I can venture to say that I have abused my cameras--both intentionally and unintentionally--worse than 95% of Pentax's userbase.

The following examples should provide enough documentation and evidence to support that claim. For those of you who have seen these before, I apologize for a lot of self-plagiurizing/-summarizing.

Intentionally:

  • This was actually the second iteration I did that day (I screwed up the first shoot), and now, over 3.5 months later (this was made in the beginning of July and is not mid September), I have never had a single issue with either camera or the lenses. No sand inside any of the dials, buttons, etc. The flash got "stuck" on the K-7 in the video because sand had gotten under it (it is weather sealed also, but obviously not the space between it and the camera), so once I raised it up manually, it was good to go, and today it feels as if I just bought it - springy as ever. Come winter time I plan to do a sequal to that weather sealing video - I'll save the details to keep it a surprise ;) Also, you have to remember, that natural rain hardly ever has the same intensity and pressure as a full blown shower head - I have lived through plenty of hurricanes and I can promise you that whatever rain you are thinking of will at best match the water's intensity that you saw in that video I made. And that would be unbelievably rare when it does happen.

You Tube

  • I can't count the amount of times I have poured water from liter+ bottles, sinks, shower heads and even a hose once just to freak photographer friends out (which makes your 2 oz splash on the backside seem like merely spitting on it).

  • Using the above methods to legitimately clean off my cameras after getting them extremely dirty from being in the elements.

Unintentionally:
  • Do you see the large rectangular pouch that my left arm is resting on? Inside is my Pentax K-5 + mounted DA* 55 that I took on a nighttime helicopter raid mission I considered bringing the Sigma 30 since they both share an aperture of f/1.4 while the Sigma is considerably wider, but ultimately went with the 55 because of the weather and dust sealing. The next morning, I was so glad that I did - the helicopter that was coming to pick us up overshot the PZ (Pickup Zone) and flew RIGHT. OVER. us and pelted us with not just dust, but rocks. It was a CH-47 Chinook, which is the largest and most powerful helicopter in the Army's arsenal. Couple that with double rotors, and holy rotor wash lol. The camera and lens were so caked in dust and sand it was actually pretty shocking since it was inside the pouch. So I was very glad I took the 55 and not the unsealed Sigma 30. This was later cleaned under a shower head.

  • This was taken by me in Afghanistan during a dust storm at approximately 1300h (1 PM), a time when it is so bright it is still painful wearing sunglasses at times. Pentax K-5, DA* 50-135

  • This was also taken by me, but in a thunderstorm - the first few photos were ruined because there was so much water on the lens element that I didn't notice at first. Thankfully I did quickly and cleaned it. Pentax K-5, DA* 16-50

  • I have taken my camera running - yes, literally running, and not in a bag/pack - just the strap across my shoulder or holding the grip in my hand. I was leading a physical training event in the rain at around 0400 as I was the lead trainer of 10 soldiers that were being trained to attend an elite military school that I had recently graduated from. Here's a photo taken from that morning, 2 hours into the rain soaked PT session (yes, those lucky few were carrying the 135kg/300lb+ boat the entire way the entire time). Pentax K-5, DA 18-55 WR

  • I have had my camera in a turret (unsecured/not tied down) while being the gunner during a mounted vehicle convoy. Because I am sure the question will arise: no, photography was obviously never my priority - it was just to catch opportunity shots, and I shot pics through the bullet proof observation windows of the turret - I never put myself at unnecessary risk. At one point we were fired upon by enemy insurgents, at which point I fired back and the links and shell casings from my .50 caliber machine gun fell on the unprotected camera/lens. Again, this had to be cleaned under a shower head to be cleaned from all the dust and sand that covered the body and lens. Picture is of the K-5 + D-BG4 Battery Grip, DA* 60-250

  • Most recently I have resorted to taking my K-5 on combat patrols (similar in fashion to the Night Vision image above) in a drop-leg holster (Lowepro Zoom 55 AW, which is a perfect fit for the gripped K-5 + DA* 60-250 with reversed hood) as I operate in an advisory role patrolling among Afghan soldiers. Yes my primary "weapon" is an actual rifle, not the camera, which is kept within the holster except for 15 sec intervals of quick-removal,-picture,-replacement-into-holster. Yes, as you can imagine, the same cleaning treatment is given upon return to base each time.

Others' Testimonials:

Finally see this thread and focus on posts 4 & 5 - I collected approximately 100 photos taken of/with Pentax DSLR's in extremely adverse environments:

Post your WR picture [Page 1]: Pentax SLR Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

In conclusion, I think it is extremely immature, shortsighted, and reactionary to exclaim "water resistant my ass!" without being a responsible consumer who does his research. Ultimately all you have accomplished is placing a completely unwarranted and undeserving stigma upon a company that has otherwise delivered far beyond their claims of 'weather resistance." Like I said - there is no such thing as the perfect factory/assembly line - some products will inevitably fail and you probably just got one from a bad batch - it happens. Sucks, and I'm sorry it did, but have faith that that is not the norm. Far from it:

Travelling with a small DSLR and small primes

Perhaps I'd take the chance to touch on travelling with a small DSLR and some small primes.

I'm not only official family scribe, but also pack mule and man friday on a trip.
Yes, that means that other than having to try and get the best photos/memories for the family, I also need to lug around the pram, water (kids and adults), baby food/powder/diaper/etc, as well as change the diaper (or at least help out the Mrs with it).

The K30 with 3 small primes is a godsend to me.
No compromise in photo quality, handling and not too encumbering.
I never felt burdened down by the system throughout the whole trip.
Nor did I have to make any sacrifice in terms of focal length coverage which covered from 15mm (UWA - for wide views); 31mm (for most stuff); 77mm (for reach/portraits/isolation).

Here are some examples.

15mm (UWA) for most wide views

When even wider is needed - 3 frames stitched in Photoshop Elements taken with the same 15mm.
Also the Dynamic Range from the K30 is very good, the shaded areas within the station to the bright sunlit buildings outside all recovered from 1 RAW exposure.

31mm 'normal' - for most general uses

31mm or 77mm for the small things that catch our interest in a trip

77mm short tele for reach, isolation, portraits
