I remember reading about his work a couple of years ago. I'm really glad he managed to finally finish his project.

One of our poets said that "Eternity was born in a village/the countryside". These photos prove it time and time again.

By the way, Azopan Photoarchive has a huge collection of scanned photos if you are interested.

I've been having the same doubts as of late, and I'm especially worried about the end of 3rd party support. At this point, I'm more likely inclined to believe that Sigma will end the production of the 35mm Art lens, than announce that they will also be offering the 50 and the 85mm lenses, for example. Ricoh seems to be in two minds regarding Pentax. I still am under the impression that their marketing strategy is close to nonexistent, and taking into account that the camera market is shrinking at a rapid pace, the future of the brand doesn't look very bright. Even so, I think this period in time would be the best starting point for a Pentax renaissance, taking into account how most of the camera makers have fallen into very specific routines with regards to their products.

But the question still remains: would it be wise to change to a different system?

Which camera should I choose?

Thank you very much everyone for your help, especially regarding my concerns about motion blur. I currently own a Ricoh GR and I'm very well aware of the problems that I have with that camera regarding blurry photos. The fact that the K-1 has the SR system should help me get over most of them.

Taking in consideration what Na Horuk and the others said about naming a lens that I want to use, I was thinking more along the lines of system versatility. For example, I know the Pentax 24-70 f2.8 is a very dependable workhorse, but I would much rather go for the Sigma 24-105 f4. I would gladly trade an aperture stop for a 35mm increase in maximum focal length. Now, there is the option of just getting the Sigma lens and then sending it to Sigma UK to have them perform a mount conversion, but I'm not very convinced about the whole thing. I guess I'll have to decide on which compromise to make when it comes to lenses.

When it comes to ergonomics, I always preferred Pentax over Nikon or Sigma. So from that point of view, It's already clear which would be the better camera.

Cheers

Which camera should I choose?

Hello Everyone,

I've finally got to the moment where I can start building up my full frame system. The problem lies in not knowing which way to go – Nikon D750 or Pentax K1. I have been pondering this question for a while know, read the reviews, read user reviews and I have a decent idea about which are the strengths of each camera. The thing is I just can't make up my mind.

Here are some details that might put things better into perspective: I generally do landscape photography, with night time photography also being very common. I also enjoy shooting concerts, although I haven't done this in a while. Other types of photography that I don’t do often would be portrait work, street photography and wildlife photography. I am not a big fan of portraiture or street photography, but I do enjoy wildlife photography and I am planning on doing this a lot more in the future. I would like to point out that I am long time pentaxian (starting from ~2006), but I have also had the pleasure of owning a Sigma SD14 and a Nikon D300. I still have a few really good K series lenses and a Pentax K100D that I don't want to part with.

At the end of the day, I didn't really enjoy shooting with the D300. I was really impressed with how well it was built and how good the autofocus system was, but I always ended up being slightly annoyed about how much work I have to put into editing the raw files to make them look like I wanted too. And herein lies one of the problems - I'm not a big fan of Nikon's colour profiles. I definitely enjoy more the colour profiles of Pentax cameras, and after seeing a few big galleries of photos from the Nikon D750, I have the impression that not that much has changed since the days of the D300 when it comes to colour.

The thing that I'm worried about most with using the K1 is the high resolution. Don't get me wrong, I think the sensor in the camera is one of the best out there at the moment, but I have doubts in my ability of hand-holding the camera and not getting motion blur in the photos. The increase in resolution automatically brings a decrease in exposure time to make sure that there is no motion blur in the photos. Could any K1 owners give me feedback about this issue? Have you seen an increase in the amount of blurry photos after switching to the K1? I remember reading a few articles written by the late Michael Reichmann in which he was saying how important it is to have the "medium-format approach" when shooting with the Nikon D800 if you want to get the most out of it.

All in all, I see it this way:

  • The K1 would be a great choice for landscape and low-light photography and it would probably be a little bit out of its territory in wildlife photography. I have already more than enough manual glass to use on it, so there's no rush to start buying any autofocus lenses, except maybe the 15-30 or the 24-70.

  • The D750 would be a good choice for any type of photography, although I wouldn't benefit from the skytracer technology. I also wouldn't be that of a big fan of its colour profiles. I own a few Nikon manual and autofocus lenses, but not that many as the Pentax ones that I have. Also, its resolution is lower, so I don't need to worry about motion blur that much. It would also open up the possibility of using more 3rd party lenses, especially the ones from the Sigma Art Series.Third party lenses aren't as well supported at the moment in the case of the K mount (I really hope in the future this will change in the near future).

What would be your opinion? Which would you go for? Which would you recommend?

Pentax ME Super - Blank role of film

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I will try to make use of them and I'll come back with a detailed reply.

The development lab could be a problem. I developed other films at them and the results were underwhelming, but I also put the blame on the films being very old. I kept using the same lab, because it has a really good reputation. Once I rule out the shutter effect, I should shoot a film and get it developed at a different lab.

I thought the same and before loading the film I cycled through 30-ish dry firings - including the high exposure times. The shutter seemed to be working fine. I don't think Eric would have sent back a non-functioning camera.

Can the film be the culprit? Or the mirror getting stuck in up position have an effect on the way the shutter works?

I can't scan the images, because I don't have a scanner at the moment. If I were to describe them I would say that they are an incomplete exposure: the bottom part looks like it's properly exposed, for a few millimeters, followed by a complete clipping to white(transparent on the film roll). So, from a height of 24mm, 2-3mm are properly exposed, while the rest aren't.

The film was spooled properly, because when I wanted to rewind the film in the canister, I ended up breaking it (I forced the 24th exposure).

Hello everyone,

I have recently exposed a role of Fujicolor C200 and it came back blank. There were just a few image marks at the bottom of some photos.

The camera was serviced by Eric a few years ago and this is the first role of film I took after having it serviced. The mirror got stuck in upwards position a few times, but tapping the bottom plate with my hand unstuck it.

Do you guys have any idea why the film could have come out blank?

Regards,
Alex.

Hello everyone,

I've just stumbled upon this beauty on ebay:

300mm F 5 6 Pentax Ultra Achromatic UA Takumar Lens EXC | eBay

I haven't read much about this particular lens, but it seems to be one of the more rarer ones out there. Maybe one of the members wants to have a go at it. Btw, I apologize if it's already in the marketplace and I missed it by mistake. It's always nice seeing one of the rarer lenses come up for sale.

Thanks for sharing. It's really nice to read about the impact old cameras had when they were launched. Also, it makes up for a good comparison between how reviews used to be written and how they are wrote nowadays.

Super resolution by pixel shifting in future Pentax cameras

Not only in future cameras, but also in slightly older ones, too. I don't think it's that farfetched to see it appear in the K-5 series or in the K30/50/500 models. That could be a good way to show the owners of those models that they're still thought of + it would be an incentive for people searching for second-hand cameras to choose Pentax.

K-3- The Reviews, So Far

Sorry for deviating the discussion towards something else, but I just wanted to point out that there is a strong opinion on DPReview that their tardiness on the Pentax K-3 review is unacceptable. I know that there are other sites which provide much more adequate in-depth reviews on cameras, but DPReview is one of the most visible ones out there and it is really annoying to see them shun different manufacturers. I hope that this wave of comments will provide a much needed wake-up call. Anyway, I'm still amazed on how this site has evolved during the years. I can't believe it's the same site that helped me choose the Pentax K100D as my first camera.

Hello everyone,

I was just checking DPReview to see what are they up to and saw that they put up a "review" of the Nikon D610, while last week they put up a Fujifilm XE-2 review. Perfectly normal until here, but if you check the comment sections, most of them are filled with users asking for the Pentax K3 review, either nicely or not so nicely. So, if you want to have a good laugh, take a look at the comments from each article. I know this is not exactly related to a Pentax K3 review but I wanted to share it with you, just for the laughs.

This is my entry:

2) This photo, sadly, is about two years old. It was taken with a Pentax K100D and a Tamron 18-200 f : 3.5-6.3.

3) On the day I captured this photo there was a serious storm in my town and on the same day I received my new lens - the Tamron that I shot this photo with. When I received the lens I never expected such a good testing opportunity to arise, especially one which allowed me to stay in the comfort of my own home.

The thing that still impresses me every time when I look at this photo are the two persons sitting back to back, while the end of the world is happening just beside them - and all of this for a fleeting second, till the wind changed the shape of those clouds. I identify nature’s force with the image of the Sun looking like it’s about to explode in a giant fireball, an image which is reinforced by the storm clouds being beautifully outlined by the sun’s rays and opposite of this, nature’s fragility – the fact that this image is, as I previously said, only there for a moment, being easily destroyed by the wind.

The reason I would like to win the Pentax 21 Limited is because I want to get a weatherproof photo gear set and this lens is one of the lenses on my list. The reasons behind this choice are numerous:
  • It is small.

  • It is made of metal with tight tolerances.

  • It has very good resolution.

  • You can use it either as a landscape lens while mountaineering or as a street photography/architecture lens when you are in town (and if you use it on a small camera, like a K-r/x/m, you have a very unobtrusive set-up).

  • It challenges you to make the best of it.

  • And the most important reason - you can abuse it. I can see this lens being happy doing it's job in whatever environment you put it in (and I am certainly going to put it to the test). This lens is a workhorse lens.

- Tudor Alex.
