If my daughter takes photography (arts major) in Highschool next year, my K30 or K70 will be finding its way into class, which should bring some interesting comments.
18-135mm, DA-50, will be sacrificed for the cause. I do have a Rokinon 85mm F/1.4, but I doubt that it will be of much use in class unless for a lecture. If they need a long manual lens, I have an old manual 200mm F/4.

For those wanting 'good' USB charging (not perfect, but much better), magnetic USB charger 'bits' on the end (micro usb, usb-c, lightning) - used to replace cable ~ once/month on my tablet as micro usb pins didn't hold, lightning cables ended up bending. I used TOPK gen2 magnetic cord/ends - supports fast charging. Not perfect, but last a lot longer.
Personally... I do wish that cameras had a USB-C port and could charge the battery. Having a battery charger is fine, but.. people can purchase literally a multitude of portable USB (c) portable batteries, and this makes not having to drag the charging cradle for a 120V outlet a possibility.

While taking my K-70 and DA 18-135mm to Salmon Creek Falls, CA (central coast), I ran into... another Pentaxian. Sounded Australian. I spotted what looked like a manual screwmount lens on his camera in the creek.
He looked over and asked if that was a 'real' Pentax. Its possible that he hadn't seen one since film days. Interestingly enough it was enough for him to take out a 645N into the creek.

I'm hopeful on keeping APS-C around, even if it goes mirrorless only.
FF/MF is the higher end market that Ricoh/Pentax makes its money on - at least in North America. The US market (Canada as well) is not the high volume that it was. Many have gone to mass use of cellphones for images... which do a great job for ~+90% of general 'users'. Enthusiasts will still end up on APS-C, but its market place - in North America is not what it was. Professionals will still opt for FF or MF, while some may use APS-C depending on the nature of the photography. I personally like my K-70, and I use it for items that I cannot see most cellphones/compacts taking.

Pentax M 50/1.4 and Rokinon 85mm/1.4
Both are incredibly sharp.

I like the bokeh - on the D FA* 50/1.4 better. I'll keep my $50 Pentax M 50/1.4 though.

I agree. Coming from SoCal - place where Pentax can only be ordered and not found, I found that finding a Pentaxian has been very rare, and didn't expect to see any on a cruise ship of ~1400 people going to Alaska.
Finding gear in places like Canada has been much more common.

Alaska is a great place for outdoors photography.
I have a picture somewhere of my trip on a Princess Cruise to Alaska, and up in Tracy Arm, I had my old red Pentax K-x - in the drizzle, and took a shot of someone standing on the deck with a Pentax 645D and an octopus tripod on the rail.
After my K-x lens (Sigma 18-200) fogged up, I was floored when someone lent me their Sigma - can't remember which model it was... but it was huge, and the closest was either 50mm or 70mm (50-500mm ?! ). I was very happy, and surprised to not only see a 645D (before the 645z existed) but in the rain, and also being lent someone else's (rare to see Pentax in the wild!) lens which was probably worth 3x my old K-x.

Alaska, depending on what time of year, and where exactly you're going can be quite damp/humid.
I took a trip a long time back with my red Pentax K-x on Princess Cruises (late June), and my lens fogged up a bit during the glacier inlets.
It did drizzle a lot (I had a cheap 18-200 Sigma).
The craziest thing happened - I was actually lent a Sigma bigma to take a few shots (there were other Pentaxians!!)
and the most unusual - in the rain, I got a shot of a Pentaxian shooting off the bow with a 645D.

Pasadena camera show - a 'pristine' Pentax M zoom - 1:4.5 80-200mm - $30
This lens looks like it just came out of the original case. Not even scratches on the exterior - no dust, no haze, no nothing.

I know the area a bit. In highschool, we had one of our highschool 'regional' Curling bonspiels in Geraldton. Took the back road from White River through Manitouwadge / Caramat over to Highway 11.

I saw another parent with a Pentax recently at my kids school (school play). I was shocked. I didn't think anyone in SoCal had a Pentax. I usually have to leave the country to see others.

Since you're looking to replace the old 18-55mm, mostly for quality reasons, I'd look to the following (based on your criteria you've listed):
- Pentax 16-85mm (a litte more expensive, but highly rated lens) this will be larger/heavier than your 18-55mm kit by far
- Pentax 18-135mm ( good general purpose lens - I have one its on my camera most of the time )
- Tamron 17-50 / Sigma 17-50 - These are great lenses - f/2.8 would be great for indoors.
As an owner of the K-x some of these lenses may be a little bulky, and you won't enjoy the benefits of WR as much.

Funny... I have a 'few' 2x lens extenders, and for grins - bolted them all in series with a Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 to get a decent shot of the moon.
It wasn't as bad as many would expect.

Looks like it will be part of the southern Mediterranian vs. England/Scotland/Ireland/France.
- Rome, Dubrovnik Croatia, Venice, Koper Slovenia, Split Croatia, Corfu Greece, Olympia Greece and Valletta Malta
I expect a bit more direct sun there than I would in say Ireland/Scotland and even England, but some awesome cathedrals and Greek sites.

It was a combination of rain/drizzle and just overall condensation. This was 'summer' (almost Canada Day), and I suspected that this might happen going from outdoors to indoors and back.
It was also a spot where I caught the rarest of things... a handheld 645D in the drizzle

I suspect that my shooting will be similar to yours - 18-135 on the camera the majority of the time, with something wide/fast for indoors. I do suspect that it can (will?) be wet around Scotland/Ireland/London.
I've had one trip with my old Sigma 18-200 on my old Pentax K-x into Alaska - and it was a mess. Lens had to 'defog' for many hours. Fortunately, someone lent me their bigma (50-500mm Sigma) :) at the glacier (rare to have another Pentax on a cruise - same one that I saw a 645D out in the same mist)
I was thinking 'a bit' about the DA15 mostly because its a great lens, and it is small and light. The K-70 does well in poor lighting, and I can bump the ISO a bit.

Thanks. I've used filters in the past - typically when I end up in the forest or beach, and they're a good bang for the buck.
This trip will be more of a drag by my nose style (Cruise ship - 12 days, 9 ports) - if I can still book it.

I've had the same issue - I picked up the Rokinon 85mm a couple of years ago - great lens, really sharp, smooth focus.
Downside - somewhat heavy, and at f/1.4 you had better be using a tripod, shooting still life.

The main focus for the fast-wide/fast-ultrawide is for museums/castles. I think the 18-135mm will do well for most outdoor items that I plan to shoot.
I have used BorrowLenses in the past (tested the 18-135mm actually on a trip to Hawaii through them).
I do see the Sigma 10-20mm 3.5 through LensRentals which might be worth a try for the price.

I'm planning on heading to Europe, I have a relatively new K-70 (Xmas), and a set of decent lenses for outdoor walking, etc.
I do think that I may want to get a budget fast/wide fast/ultra-wide lens for indoors (Palace of Versailles, castles in Scotland/Ireland/England)
My current lenses include:
DA 18-135mm WR
DA 18-55 (old)
Sigma 18-200
Rokinon 85mm f/1.4
Pentax M50 f/1.4
Pentax M200 f/4
Sigma 24mm f/2.8
I'm considering:
Rokinon/Samyang 14mm f/2.8
Rokinon/Samyang 10mm f/2.8
Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5
Irix 15mm f/2.4
Pentax 12-24mm ($$)
Pentax 15mm f/4
Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5
I'm considering the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 due to cost and optics/focal length.

Similar reason for the upgrade for me. The battery eject clip broke off (little white tab), but the compartment still closes/latches and works. The other issue that I've been having is the reported aperture issue. A lot of my pictures are with the 18-135mm WR, and same with video. I've found the aperture issue to be a big enough issue to use manual lenses if I needed to take a truly reliable shot. ---------- Post added 01-17-17 at 08:20 AM ----------
I guess it really depends on a few things:
1. Use of live view will drain the battery pretty quickly - I doubt that you're using it.
2. I'd recommend one spare.
On my K-30, I was typically able to get a couple hundred shots w/o issue as long as I didn't use flash or live view.
