I was wondering if I could get a general consensus of the k-x's battery life. For those using 1.01 or 1.02 firmware, what would be your average number of shots taken on a full charge? There's a lot of factors like built in flash, live view, raw, lens correction, playback, video, autofocus, and SDM versus screw. I'm assuming most people use eneloops... what would be the average shots taken for a set of AA's?

Thank you for the suggestions! I did try DxO Optics Pro 6 (trial version) and it does indeed allow color profiles for the k-x or k-5 if you want. It was quick and easy..but man, the price for the software =( I do have Lightroom. I was hoping Pentax DCU can convert a converted .CR2 file to .DNG file but it didn't work. I might try the grey scale approach.

I have the Pentax k-x and canon 60D, but love pentax color more than canon's. I know some part of it may be due to the "color" of the lens, but I was wondering if there is a way to convert raw files to match default Pentax color? Similarly, I've been trying to port or tweak a custom Canon PIcture Style to match Pentax jpeg but just can't get it right. Any suggestions out there? I can always use the k-x, but at this time the swing-out lcd screen of the 60D is useful for me.

Thanks for the explanation guys! I guess the underlying reason for my DOF inquiry is that I had a feeling that the light loss inccured when using an extension tube effectively increases the f-stop (depending on the extension distance). Doesn't this change in f-stop change your DOF? All the while, a comparible close-ups lens at the same mag ratio does not change your f-stop, hence a difference in bokeh between the two setups? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Would a close-up lens give narrower depth-of-field than a comparable extension tube giving the same magnification increase? I'm assuming no, since they both essentially decrease your minimum focus distance. But I'm wondering if the correction of the added close-up lens affects the amount of bokeh.
I know from a disadvantege standpoint, the close-up lens also decreases your maximum focus distance (usually losing your capability to focus to infinity), while the extension tube decreases the amount of light hitting the sensor and sometimes even decreasing autofocus reliability. Does the extension tube decrease your max focus distance as well?

I agree. Canon USM is fast and reliable. This is one area that Pentax could focus R&D money in and effectively improve their whole line of current lenses. Autofocus system is another. That is why I think making more prime lenses should be the least of their priority, since they already excel in that department.

I voted for SDM II but I was wondering if additions could be added to the poll? I feel the wide angle zoom department and super zooms for the mainstream consumer/traveler/walk-around was left out.

Pentax has some great primes already. Some more cheap ones with be nice but I feel they need to focus on their zoom lens lineup, especially since current SDM lenses do no inspire confidence in the reliability department. My votes for a realistic lens? SMC 15-85mm F/3.5-5.6 WR ED SDM II DA* 17-70mm F/2.8 ED SDM II
And please Pentax...tame your chromatic aberrations!

Aye my apologies..didn't see your thread! I would like Pentax to focus on a zoom lens though rather than more primes for the walk-around travelers and nature buffs. And to create a reliable successor to the SDM. Perhaps a 17-70 F/2.8 WR USM

I was thinking about how Pentax has quite some work on to become more mainstream and that provding a good prosumer grade zoom lens is my opinion of a great start! What do you guys think should be the next lens? My vote is for a 16-85mm F/4 WR with 1:4 magnification ratio! Ahh, that is my wish. What is yours? And please..try to be reasonable.

I used to own a Canon T2i that would always attempt to default to Iso400 no matter the ambient lighting conditions. Only until the power guide of the flash was not capable of properly exposing the scene did the ISO start going beyond Iso400 in AutoIso mode. Not sure if anyone can cofirm. Just my 2cents.

I agree. Their choice to allow more ambient light fill the picture rather than your dedicated fill-in flash strobe is a bit counter-productive. I can tell a difference between "color of light" when I forcefully shoot at ISO 400 compared to ISO 6400. It gets warmer with higher ISO's and I can see where one would want that..but if I go that route I might as well go Available Light all the way. I very much prefer it default to low ISO's for cleaner images especially if my flash can provide the light. That way one has more control with a studio setup. Its a good thing changing ISO is so easy for us.

So what is the difference between embedded and adobe standard? does embedded use the same profile used in creating pentax jpeg? i find default colors for red and purple to be a little on the magenta and pink side, respectively. i think the comment on "camera vs standard" has some truth to it, none are all correct. ALso, I think the quality of the lens has some effect before color reaches your sensor as raw data.

Hey guys, for those with a k-5, I was wondering in the situation with an external flash like a Metz 36 does the Auto ISO usually default to a low ISO like 400 or does it tend to hit high ISO's in low light situations. I only ask because I noticed my k-x in Program mode shoots ISO 6400 in dark situations when I know the flash is capable of lighting the room enough to hit ISO 400 with no problem.
I noticed another k-5 thread where tilting the flash for bounce causes overexposure, but thats not exactly my problem here. Thanks for any feedback ahead of time.

I've been day dreaming about the k-5 too, but all these issues, whether or not they've been fixed, make me hesitate to buy. I have the k-x and it sleeps next to me in bed haha. Dare I upgrade and leave my first k love behind?

Sorry for the confusion guys! I am probably the reviewer that everyone mentioned at the beginning of this thread. I re-read what I wrote and its misleading =( Let me try to be clear about what I said in my review... Even though you manually turn of Sigma's optical stabilization via the switch on the lens, the floating lens elements responsible for OS are still powered on, as in still gyrating, but do not engage when you half press the shutter. I came to this conclusion because whenever my k-x goes into power saving mode or I turn it off I can actually feel and hear something inside the lens power down. For anyone with a Sigma OS lens, listen to your lens up close before you turn on your camera, make sure beforehand both SR and OS are switched off, and you will still hear the floating lens elements spin up, thus consuming power. Turning the switch off obviously turns off (disengage is more appropriate term) lens optical stabilization but not power consumption.

I owned a Canon T2i and the Pentax k-x at the same time. I ended up selling the T2i. The performance and ergonimics of the pentax is so much better and the way canon handles white balance drives me mad. Although the jpg algorithms for the T2i were better, the k-x had more image customization and features, and especially dynamic range in raw. I also like the idea of using cheap vintage glass.

I'm a newcomer to the DSLR market, but I did my share of researching. I like Pentax design, from looks to handling performance. My first dslr is the k-x, and I choose that because Pentax still hangs onto AA battery power sources, provides the most features for your buck, and lets one have fun with cheap vintage glass.

Hello Pentax Forum!
I admit I've been reading this forum for information, but never introduced myself until now. My first foray into the DSLR world and proudly with the Pentax community was through my k-x, a camera body that packs a mighty punch. I most enjoy the design philosophy of Pentax much better than other makers so I can see, even through my little pentamirror viewfinder, that Pentax has something bright ahead of them. Looking forward to it.
