No tripod, this was after hiking for 4 hours and up a mountain. However, other photos I took of waterfalls with the tripod also did not fare well-and yes IS was off.
I will upload some to dropbox and share so you can better see whats going on. Thanks

I do have it set to natural and have since shortly after purchasing it. I almost always shoot in M, and always in raw. I've taken some decent images with same camera and lens, one even won a monthly challenge here on PF. Something since this summer has made them look poorly captured.

Sorry it took so long. Here is just one of many that seem to lack any resemblence of sharpness, colors are dull etc.
When I reviewed on the evf it looked as though I was getting photos rich in detail and color, get them home and this is what I have.

I went to the Adirondacks and took a bunch of photos and am not really happy with anything that I came home with. Don't see how to post raw files which all were taken with. Should I just post an converted jpg?
Colors are lacking, details fuzzy, overblown highlights...etc.
Wrong settings, or something with lens or camera?

You make some great points. Don't get me wrong-the waterfalls in the finger lakes are my passion when it comes to photography. They are what actually got me into photography to begin with. And I love the finger lakes and the views that I get to see when I have the opportunity to take some time away. I think I worded what I said incorrectly.
However, they aren't at the end of the street and most are about an hour away. Add that I very rarely shoot in mid day, so my options are weekend mornings. (I don't want to hike out a creek in dark). Those mornings are increasingly hard to come by. I might be close by these great scenes, but life has it way of me pretty much going to work and going home to be with family-without much time in between to stop and look around.
If I were to replace the k30-I would still want a camera that could capture the beauty around here just as well-just in a smaller package.

I mentioned the NEX in my original post, must have forgot it in the secondary...I do like photos I have seen taken with that camera.

This may be true for many a photographer, but for me at least...my backyard, the local park etc aren't what I want hanging on my wall. I'm sure many awesome photos come from close to home for photographers...but mountains, ravines, sweeping vistas etc are what excite me about photography. I guess in a sense if I can see it on a daily or weekly basis-I have no interest in capturing forever in time a photo of it.
I have the 16-45, 55-300, and a handful of M lenses. I've rented some faster, longer glass for trips and concerts as well. Most of the time I have the 16-45 mounted-it fits my needs for waterfalls and summit views.

However I am forever stuck with a 28mm lens. I guess I don't know why I listed it as a potential other than it's great reviews and it would fit my use for landscapes well. But other than that....it would make a better 2nd camera than an all in one.

Some interesting POVs here, thanks.
None of you have fully advocated jumping to a a GR or Rx100 or the like....are there limitations that I am not seeing? Other than a fixed 28mm lens?
IQ seems to be as good if not better than the k30 from what comparisons I've seen.
Don't get me wrong, the K30 isnt heavy IMO and isn't the biggest out there. However, if I could save some space in my pack while climbing high peaks as well as have it more readily accessible for trail photos vs taking it only when I stop. Or the ability to throw it in my pocket or a camelbak when roaming around locally to waterfalls...why wouldn't I....if I can attain the same quality photos for my use?
Maybe I read the wrong review somewhere, but for some reason the K-01 doesn't appeal to me. Aside from that, it's one of the heaviest MILCs available...so that doesn't really get me anywhere.
I'm not totally against keeping the k30, I do love it. Just wondering if something smaller would suit my needs and am hoping for some advice from those who made the switch if those folks exist.

Do these cameras require a different tripod per se?
Filters are 90% of the time on my camera, and if not stow away not taking up much room at all. The camera bodys space hogging/required stowage is more of what I am possibly looking to change.

When I first bought my kx, I had grandeur ideas of becoming a semi pro. I bought some glass, and upgraded to the k30.
Life happened, and since that first year with the kx (previous year with a Canon s5is) I find that I rarely get out shooting. I'm a landscape kinda guy, not really into photographing much else. And with that requires time and money to travel to locations worthwhile (IMO) for shooting.
Then come all the great stories I've heard and photos I've seen from mirrorless, m4/3, and p&s.
I also get out once/twice a year for hiking/backpacking in the mountains and appreciate what a smaller kit could do for me.
My question is, if I traded out for a say a Sony rx100, Ricoh gr, or a Nex what am I loosing?
I would say that the ability to add filters (ND and CP) are high among my list of musts as well as being able to set the shutter speed. A lot of my photography revolves around waterfalls-and I strive for the milky flow.
Occasionally I like to shoot birds in my backyard as well, so a zoom would be nice but not top priority. (I say this bc if I understand correctly-the GR and rx100 don't have a zoom?)

Letchworth is definitely worth a trip in its own. I have found deer at the base of numerous falls as well, usually in early spring. Guessing they misjudged a step or were caught on ice.

It may very well be NYFalls. Just was sharing my opinion. However, I do recall some uproar regarding that club and them taking groups of 20+ people into those areas and making a mess.

You believe so? I haven't found that to hold true for the western portion of the area. I personally contributed to their information and have found it to be a great resource as I sought out new falls to photograph. Mind you anyone with a computer can use satellite imagery to find new falls. The members there are very respectful of private property. Folks who intend to utilize the falls area for purposes other than photographing (ie: partying) are the most likely culprit of property becoming posted and in that case IMO didn't learn of the falls via that website but from elsewhere. Just my 2 cents.

Taughannock is quite impressive, however Fall Creek holds it own IMO. Not to mention the dozens of more other falls & parks with multiple falls within. Nearly all of them accessible to the public.

I've visited both Pratt's and Rattlesnake, however just as I was finding my interest in photography. There's some great falls I've seen photos of from your county, including Fellows, and Emerson. NYFalls.com is a great resource for falls in your area as well across the state if your interested.

Thus far the only lens I have had the pleasure to use is the 16-45 on both the Kx and K30. I am looking to change to a Sig 10-20, or Tam 10-24 this year and hope the IQ improves just a tad.

Here are some various concert photos I've taken. I've been fortunate to create a relationship with some radio stations and concert venues. I have no professional affiliations with media, and have been very grateful to be able to get into these shows and shoot. I also get a kick out of the looks I get by the pros shooting FF Canikon. Some of them are quite rude, but whatever...I am still there.
These were taken with both a Kx and K30. Used various lenses (all rentals).

Has anyone ever ordered from a Japanese merchant? I can get the 100macro wr for $200+ cheaper than any US merchants flea bay or otherwise.
I know I have to pay separate customs, but am unsure how much that would be.

I have an opportunity to pick up this lens at a fair price locally and am wondering if I have any recourse if its a bad copy as well documented here on PF. The seller says he got it as a demo and doesn't shoot Pentax so is selling it along with k5 body.
So if I find a problem after purchase and the seller won't allow me to return, what will Sigma do for me?

I'm leaning towards the Sigma 150-500.
I haven't really explored the world of primes, and while from all I gather they are the creme de la creme of lenses...not sure how that would work out for moving wildlife in relation to where I am set up. Seems a zoom would offer that versatility in case a bird was in close or further away.
Decisions decisions. Been researching for close a week and ready to pull the trigger this week...still just undecided.
Would those recommending the 150-500, prefer that over say the 170-500 or 400 (can be had for under $400, but am concerned about haze/lens cement issues)?

I'm in want of a telephoto lens, but am not sure which one will suit my needs and keep me "happy" for years to come.
Budget-under $1000
Primary use-backyard/park birding, squirrels, deer etc.
I see several lenses that may suit my need from here and other places including
Pentax 300 or 400 mf
Pentax DA 55-300
Pentax DA 300 (waiting till I have enough saved up to get)
Sigma 170-500 APO DG
Sigma 150-500
Sigma 400 APO mf (have read there are issues with lens cement)
Just not sure based on what I will be using it for, what will satisfy my needs without breaking the bank but also not wanting me to run out and buy a different lens next year.
I've been considering renting the DA 300 and the Bigma and trying them out, but would rather not spend $100+ on that as it could be used towards purchasing a lens.
