They added 2 16GB SDHC cards to the deal...It's not much, but makes it that much better

I have the H1 and I can tell you that's a great deal. I bought it they day it came out and really enjoy using it. Haven't used it much for my video/camera work, but I used it for reference recordings of my band's shows, and it always performed very well. Audio quality is great considering the small package/price.

Thanks! A wider lens is definitely in my future, I've been keeping my eyes open for a good deal on a 10-20 or 12-24, but until then I'll have to make due with the kit lens being my widest.
Thanks for the kind words!
Thanks for the feedback! I was doing a lot of experimenting yesterday with different settings on the camera and with the flash, as I'm very new to using strobe/flash lighting as I mentioned earlier. I like the POV idea, will definitely try that out. As for more "natural" looking lighting, take a look at my other pictures in my kitchens set (Kitchens - a set on Flickr). Those were all shot with natural/fixture light only and my K-x the last time we did some shoots. I used some multi-exposure/HDR to compensate for lack of fill lighting on those.
I'll pass the compliment on to her!

I got to shoot some kitchens that my Fiance designed today, which was my first opportunity to use my new K-30 and AF 360 flash. Definitely a busy day learning the new gear as I hadn't really used either at all yet (I've had the K-30 for 3 weeks now but work has kept me busy, and the AF 360 was picked up on the way to shoot!) I used the flash in wireless P-TTL on a stand with an umbrella, lots of experimenting with settings on both the K-30 and flash as this is my first venture into using external flashes for photography, and being that my background is more in video I'm more of a WYSISYG guy when it comes to setting up lighting. I used the kit lens for everything, 1. because it is my widest lens, 2. because I didn't want to complicate things given I was getting accustomed to all the new toys. I've processed a few of the shots so far, let me know what you think! Unfortunately I don't, I was just glancing at them and saw the prices but didn't see the body only price listed and didn't ask anyone.

I went into B&H in NYC today to pickup a flash and some lighting...long story short they have the Black 18/55 kit for $744, the Blue for $811 and the White for $846, so their pricing in store is all over the place. I know their site doesn't reflect these prices, but if you can get to the store, or can call and request them to match their own price, might be worth it to go through them.

I have to agree here, I believe it is a buffer bottleneck. Same reason why the k-x can only shoot so many raw on high continuous. Also, the k-5 shoots 25fps, while the k-x does 24, which is more of a regional difference. I'm not exactly versed on the still sensor size to video capture dynamics, but I feel that that could also be a bottleneck.
All that said, I've shot many short films with my k-x, and every time the person I shot for was more than impressed with the quality. The real bottleneck that keeps the k-x from being a video shooter is the fact that it does not have manual controls for shutter/Iso. You have to use exposure lock which becomes quite annoying. The sensor also overheats very quickly, which becomes a problem for longer shoots. (Tip for longer shoots, whenever not in use/recording, turn camera off, open and take out your memory card and batteries, leave the doors open as the body cools down and the batteries/card cool down too. If you have the option, swap cards/batteries with cool ones to keep the system happy, just keep alternating.)

I'd agree with Docrwm, it's definitely quieter than my K-x

So I received my K-30 yesterday (have to love Amazon 1 day prime shipping) and I only got to play with it a bit, but so far I'm extremely happy with my decision.
I've been doing more "professional" photography, so I can't wait to use it on a real shoot and see how it performs.
Now to find a new home for the K-x

Hey there everyone,
So I am looking to upgrade from my K-x. I've loved the K-x, and have really enjoyed it, but it's time to upgrade for me.
Right now I'm looking at either getting a K-30 or K-5 (original not ii)
My thinking is that the K-5 ii isn't enough of a jump for me to justify the extra $, considering the great price on the K-5 now, and the great price on the k-30 as well.
I do shoot a decent amount of video as well, nothing crazy but some short films and such. I've pushed the K-x to the absolute limit of it's video capabilities. The K-5's limited video controls/capabilities is what is keeping me from pulling the trigger on the K-5.
So, at this juncture I'm taking suggestions from you all. K-5? K-30? stick it out with the K-x?
(A quick note, I actually just ordered the K-30 from amazon, as it is currently priced at $748 with 18-55 lens, sold directly from/shipped from Amazon. But I can always return if I change my mind, just wanted to jump on the deal)
Thanks!

Agreed, I cringe every time I see it, but alas I didn't edit the film, just shot it. I was adjusting my zoom, and just continuously recording, never meant for that to make it in, but the editor chose for some reason to use that clip. What's funny is that that scene was the only I shot with a zoom lens, I needed the wide angle of my 18-55 kit lens indoors like that, where the rest of the film was shot with my 50mm, 200mm and 28mm primes.

Thanks, I'm not exactly sure since you can't set the shutter manually with video. I didn't know of the P exposure lock hack until after shooting, so I was just setting the aperture, then pointing the camera around until I got the right exposure and would lock it in video mode. I'm guessing the K-x set it to something that worked best for video. And if you're asking for the frame rate the K-x shoots 720p in 24 frames

Hey everyone, I was the DP on this film for a friend/classmate of mine for her final film project this semester. Took the opportunity to shoot the entire thing with my K-x and test out some lenses, namely my FA-50mm 1.4, and before I had that my M-50mm 1.7, but also used my Osawa 200mm f4, 28mm 2.8 and the kit 18-55.
I think it came out pretty well, considering I shot it all free-hand (couple tripod shots) and without an LCD loupe. Let me know what you think (and watch it in HD on vimeo to get the best quality of course): |

If I remember correctly this can be changed in one of the custom settings, so that regardless of focus when in auto it will fire a shot off, even if it hasn't caught a focus yet.

I posted some quick footage of this the other day, but here's some more footage from our last day of shooting. It was a quick shoot, just a couple of shots, and the final short film should be done later this week.
I'd recommend clicking HD (it will take you to Vimeo for that) because well, it just looks a lot better. |
