F vs FA primes?

What are the difference between the F and FA primes? Namely the 50 f/1.7 and 50 f/1.4. I'm looking to upgrade my A50 f/1.4 to an auto focus but not sure what the real differences are between the F and FA variants.

Thanks,
Chris

Focusing screen or VF magnifier for MF?

I have a plethora of MF lenses (see signature) that I've acquired for good prices (too cheap/poor for autofocus glass). I love these lenses but it seems that even with catch-in-focus only some of the shots are dead nuts in focus. I have ended up with a few film bodies through my package deals for the lenses and the the focusing screen is fantastic, however I have yet to shoot film. I do have a good tripod and when I use that I can use live view to zoon in and nail the focus but 97% of the time I'm hand held. I will eventually upgrade my kx but I'm Pentax for life. Is it worth the money for a Katzeye? What about the Pentax VF magnifier? Keep in mind the the kx does not have focus adjustments that the higher end models have.

Thanks,
Chris

M 50/1.7 vs. A 50/1.7

I have both and to my amatuer eyes the M is slightly sharper but the conveinience of the A is hard to beat. The A is always in the bag (usually on my K-x), the M is in the closet for when I have time and a subject that will benefit from the tack sharp lens. Either lens is a superb value in my opinion, I won't sell either. Ever. Plus I have plans to reverse the M on the front of my Sigma 105 Macro as soon as the ring gets here. As I type this I doubt I could tell you which of my pics were M or A... On that note though the A is nice for me for another reason too, the f stop data in the EXIF...

When to use Program Mode?

OK, So I was doing it 'right' but it the first thing I did in P mode was spin my 1 dial and thus imitating Av or Tv depending on my green button setting. I could see the use with 2 dials but until I upgrade from the K-x I don't think it will see much use. Thanks for the replies.

When to use Program Mode?

I've been struggling to find a use for program mode. I have read the manual and know what it 'does' but I cant figure out when I would use it. It seems to me depending on whether the green button is set to Av or Tv it acts seemingly the same as being in Av or Tv mode... What am I missing? This is on a K-x I have tried it with my SMC A lenses and my sigma 18-200.

Thanks.

Macro deep into some flowers at 2:1 and 3:1 macro ratio

Wonderful images, so much detail goes unnoticed everyday. I'm all about the budget extreme macro. I have a Sigma 105 macro, M50 1.7, and a Tamron 28 2.8 (M42). I think I'll order a few reversing rings and give this a try.

margriet,

If I understand your question correctly, I'll try to explain. A 100mm focal length is what it is, all 100mm lenses will have the same 'size' image in the view finder, film/sensor at the same distance. For example a flower at 15 feet away will be the same magnification for a 100mm 'macro' or a 100mm 'telephoto'. The difference you are reffering to is the ability of the lens to focus on objects close(r) to the sensor. In other words when you have a 1:1 macro lens you can focus on a coin, for example much closer than you could with a 100mm tele with 1:4 ratio. The 1:1 ratio simply means that you can focus on an object and it will be life size on the sensor. Think of taking a picture of a piece of paper the exact same size as the sensor in your camera... a 1:1 ratio will let you focus close enough so that that rectangle takes up the whole field of view. A 1:4, for example will only take up 1/4 of the image. It all boils down to how close the to the subject the lens can focus.

This is why any 100mm lens would work for reversing.

Took my older two kids to see some monster trucks last weekend. The power of these trucks is incredible, makes the 10,000 pound trucks move like matchboxes. The Sigma 105 was on for most of the show.

Why no HDR with RAW?

Thanks to all.. Good point Adam, makes sense. That being said though, it seems like they could do an override so that you could still select HDR and the result would just be jpg even thought I have raw set for single mages.

Why no HDR with RAW?

I went out today and (froze my digits off) and finally had the opportunity to try HDR. The only problem was the HDR option was greyed out, and of coarse I didn't have my manual with me. I have been shooting raw only for a while now and have never looked back... until now. As soon as I got home I looked it up and found that HDR is only available with jpeg format, why is that? It seems to me that it would be more advantageous in raw than jpeg anyway. Is it a hardware issue with the k-x or are all the bodies like this?

Thanks,
Chris

What is the best method to use to capture slow moving subjects with a manual lens?
Posted By cbova

Couple of things come to mine as I'm using a few MF lenses myself. First would be catch in focus which means your camera will fire when the subject is in focus, as determined by the focus confirmation hexagon. I think you have to use center focus point though for that, but I could be wrong. The next method would be setting a hyper-focal distance on the lens. If your not familiar with that it is basically a focus distance where everything from x distance to infinity would be 'acceptably' sharp. Most of the older manual lenses have a nice distance scale and depending on the aperture used you can set the focus ring so anything from say 5 feet to infinity would be reasonably sharp.

It also depends on how slow slow is and of coarse the light available and if your trying to freeze the subject or convey the motion. In general as I'm sure you know the smaller the aperture the larger your DOF will be and hence you will have more leeway on the focus.

Two nights in Vegas... what to see/shoot

I'm heading to Vegas next week for two days for work. I want to make the most of the trip because I doubt I will ever go back. I will be staying at Ceasers Palace and the trade show is at the Sands Convention Center. I will basically have 2 nights after show hours to explore and take pictures. What do you suggest? I plan on bringing my K-x, Sigma 18-200, Sigma 105 Macro, the A-50 1.7, and AF360 flash. What about the tripod and remote? Is it worth lugging that around too?

Thanks!

Item Description
Here is a black Program Plus, appears to be in very good condition. Has brand new batteries and seems to meter OK and shutter speeds sound right. Comes with Pentax AF160Sa flash that works. Has original manual and lens catalog and original body cap and strap. CProbably better than 'good' condition based on the way it looks but I haven't shot with it or had it checked. Comes with a Tokina 70-210 SD f4-5.6 1-touch zoom, auto aperture. Lens is also in very good condition glass looks perfect aperture snappy and clean, no fungus, haze, or separation. Front element could use a cleaning but that's all. Creeps from about 85 on but at 70 it holds. Also has shutter release cable and 3 rolls of 400 speed film. All in a bag ready for the film connoisseur. Appears to be very lightly used. I have not shot any film through it but if I find time I will put a roll through it. I have taken a few shots with the Tokina on my K-x digital and they look OK.

I'm not a film guy so if there's something I can check for you let me know.

Cash or trade for fast and/or sharp primes (manual focus OK), except 50mm (24, 28, 35, 135, 200...). Preferably auto aperature but will consider any. Also consider m42 if it has an adapter with it, try me. Also looking for 62mm ND filter(s) and 62mm CPL.

What do you do with your photos?

So what do with all your snaps, digital or film? Most of mine end up stored indefinitely on multiple drives... as back-ups. I'd say less than 1% get printed and less than 5% get posted to flickr/picasa/facebook. Maye another 1% get printed in photo books for relatives. What about the other 93%?? they sit in my archives until I run out of storage or I do something with them. I told myself next year, starting in January I would do a 'year in review' photo book for the close relatives (siblings, in-laws, parents...).. What about everyone else?

KX and MX value

Thanks for the replies. My name is Chris, I have LBA. I should probably pass on it since I just bought a Program Plus for the SMC-A50 f1.7. It came with a Tokina SD 70-210 f4.5-5.6, a pretty mediocre lens but it's in really nice shape (the whole kit looks pretty good). I bought it with the intention of selling the body and Tokina and keeping the A-50 to replace my M-50 f/1.7. The problem is; A) I have a hard time selling the Tokina before at least seeing how it compares to my Sigma 18-200 as far as IQ... b) it came with 3 rolls of film... I'm going to have a hard time NOT shooting at least a roll through it. I think I did OK, not a steal but I paid $70 for it with flash, bag, UV filter, shutter release cable. The other plan was to sell the M-50 after acquiring the A-50 (which I love).. but again I am going to have a hard time doing that. The aperture ring on the A version is slightly 'cheap feeling' compared to the M but chances are it will stay on A anyway and the focus is just as nice I think. I doubt I will ever notice the elleged sharpness difference of the M over A. It's so nice to have all exposure mods and aperture values in EXIF data. I doubt any of the lenses in the MX/KX kit are auto aperture since the bodies were manual. I could always throw the M50 on the Program Plus to sell it but I think I'd get more out of it selling separately after all who wants an M lens on an auto capable body?? I think part of the addiction is the thrill of not knowing until you open the package (or go see them in person) and you see an 50 f/1.2 or a Vivitar Series 1 hanging off the front of it, or any of the many desirable lenses. By the way he's selling the kit for $150, SMC 135 somethingorother (promably M series), gemini zoom, and two unknown Pentax standard primes with the Black KX and MX 'all in good condition'.

Thanks,
Chris

KX and MX value

What are KX and MX bodies going for in good condition these days? I may purchase a kit that has one of each but I have no desire to shoot film and need to decide if it's worth it for the lenses. The guy selling them is terribly hard to deal with on the phone and he never is where the gear is so getting anything useful is difficult and he does not do email. I did manage to get the serial numbers of 2 of the lenses. One is a "Pentax 135" SN 6703xxx so best I can tell its a SMC-M135 f/3.5. The other is, quoting him, "Gemini 80-205" SN 1248xx. Plus each body has some sort of standard lens on it. I was hoping since these were higher-end bodies there is some decent glass with them...

Thanks,
Chris

Thanks guys, I was on the fence about this but I think I'll pass. The 50 is only worth about $60 to me (I know I'm cheap, ask my wife). If I was interested in film I'd do it but I barely have enough time to shoot digital, never mind the perils of film, I'd love to I just don't see it happening. I'll see if I can find out what the mysterious flash unit is and maybe offer him less money... So anyone want a Super Program kit for $200?? Or a kit minus an a50 1:1.4 for $150? I inquired about the flash model and if there is any room on his asking price.

I've come across an Super Program for sale with an a50 1:1.4, Takumar 1:4.5 80~200mm, Also a flash unit, all the manuals, camera case, flash case, and a camera bag. Not a scratch on it. I have no desire to shoot film but I'd LOVE that 50 1:1.4 though, for my K-x. He's asking $200 and won't sell me just the 50... He's just about right if you go by the reviews on this sight, the Tak zoom isn't worth much... The value here (for me) is in the 50. It is a fair price, don't get me wrong, but I love a good deal just like the next guy. I guess my question is what could I sell the remainder of the kit (camera, tak zoom, flash, bag... etc) for? I also have an m50 1:1.7 that I could throw on the camera to sell it too if the a50 is as good/better (it should be).

Thanks,
Chris
