SIGMA 1.4 APO Teleconverter + PENTAX-DA* 300mm f/4 ED-IF - Has anyone actually TRIED?

I ended up getting a PENTAX 1.7X AF converter (but I haven't had a chance to try it yet!)

I'm going to try the SIGMA if I can ever get my hands on one ...

I feel pretty comfortable with PENTAX glass. And the positive reports from others on this site makes this unit seem like the best choice (PX 1.7 AF).

Thanks all!

Thanks for all the info. I'm mulling all the options. I will probably get the PENTAX 1.7 AF, since they are still readily available. But I'll keep my eyes open for the KENKO and TAMRON ones as well.

Lowell: Thanks for the link! Very helpful!

Pentaxian Lowell: Can you provide a link to those charts? Thanks!

Frogfish:

Thanks for the info.

A couple of reasons: It gets great ratings for IQ. I've had good luck with SIGMA APO products (both IQ and build). (Though their support for / interest in PENTAX AF K mounts leaves a lot to be desired.)

I'm mulling over going for the PENTAX 1.7 AF converter (and may pull the trigger soon) but it's 2X the money and used only.

On the TAMRON -- I can't seem to find any for sale at any price. I'd be happy to buy a TAMRON and would do it -- if they were readily available. I may end up opting for waiting until I can snag one. Any advice on that?

Do you mean TAMRON TC: Tamron 140F 1.4X TC?
Or this one: Tamron-F 1.4X Pz-AF MC4?

Thanks, JB

Thanks for the data on the TAMRON 70-200! I have that lens as well.

Thanks for the data on the 300!
I can live with MF on the 300 (not preferred; but ...)

I may give the TC a go and see what happens. If I do, I'll write up a detailed report for the forum.

Tommy,

I puzzled over the same thing for quite a while. I ended up choosing the SIGMA 18-50mm f/2.8 [SIGMA 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC SLD ELD].

I'm not going to say that it's a slam dunk, by any means. I chose it over the TAMRON entry due to what I judged to be a better balance of IQ features relative to the TAMRON. (I spent a lot of time looking at the resolution, chromatic aberration, and performance across apertures using the online resources such as dpreview and photozone.de). I Chose it over the PENTAX DA 16-50 f/2.8 mainly due to cost (I was also concerned about the purple fringing issue; and I heard some reports of inconsistent build quality). The SIGMA only cost me $400 new.

I'm happy with the results. The lens is very sharp. Clearly superior for sharpness, contrast, color over the kit 18-55. My copy is a little weak on the far lefthand edge wide open up to 5.6 where it cleans up completely. Generally, this is not an issue. Where it is (usually when I'm shooting at 18mm and vertical format -- I hold the camera such that the LH edge is the foreground) I am normally shooting for DOF anyway (f/8 or greater) so the problem is colved that way.

I've been using the SIGMA for quite a while now and I really like it. It's traveled around the world with me and into some pretty harsh temp/humidity conditions with no issues.

Obviously it does not resolve as well as the limited lenses I have (40mm, 70mm, 300mm) but that is not expected. I am very happy with the sharpness up through prints to 13X19 inches. it looks great.

I may eventually pick up the DA 16-50 f/2.8. We'll see. It's not a high priority.

SIGMA 1.4 APO Teleconverter + PENTAX-DA* 300mm f/4 ED-IF - Has anyone actually TRIED?

Hey all, I own the PENTAX-DA* 300mm f/4 ED-IF and I LOVE it.

But I keep eyeing the SIGMA 1.4X (and 2.0X) APO teleconverter. I have seen lots of chat that it "probably won't work with the 300 DA*" but no one has said they have actually tried the combination.

My local camera stores appear to not carry the SIGMA teleconverters for PENTAX mount. I don't really want to order one and then return it if it doesn't work. The SIGMA site chart does not give data on non-SIGMA lenses:

Lens - Teleconverter Compatability Chart

Yes, the front element on the SIGMA protrudes forward; but from my look at the rear end of the DA* 300mm, it looks to me as if it should accommodate the teleconverter. ;)

Has anyone actually tried to mount and/or use this combination?

Any assistance would be much appreciated! Cheers!
