100mp 44x33mm Medium Format Sensor

It is my understanding that the use of the larger 100 MP is restricted by contract (and probably cost) to the high end Hasselblad and Phase One Systems. The smaller 100 MO Chip is to be used by Fuji GFX and the Hasselblad X1D Systems. I would assume that the smaller chip would be a candidate for the P645Z upgrade. Although there has been no formal announcement of an upgrade, I believe the price of the P645Z was recently dropped - meaning what? My hope is that Pentax continues to develop their medium format digital system.

Broken D FA 645 90mm F2.8 Macro Lens

Precision was unable to repair my 90mm macro so they sent it to Japan where a new lens barrel assembly was installed at a cost of $1000. I have owned the lens since new and it was never abused and looked in brand new condition. Precision was unable (or perhaps unwilling) to get any details from the factory regarding the cause of failure. I suspect it was some sort of manufacturing defect but I doubt that I will ever know. I have asked the US Pentax Office to investigate and determine why my lens failed. Interesting that the factory had to change the lens serial number as part of the repair. The whole repair process smells fishy and I feel that I have been screwed. i will update my posting if I learn more.

The front half of the lens is loose and wiggles - lens operation is O:K but it feels like the lens will fall apart.

i purchased my D FA 645 90mm F2.8 Macro Lens new from a Pentax Dealer several years ago. The dealer is out of business and the lens is out of factory coverage so I am wondering whs at the expereince has been with Precision Camera Repair. I recall reading that this model of lens sometimes has mechanical failures. The lens has never been dropped or otherwise abused so it is disappointing that has broken. Please advise

My D FA 645 90mm F2.8 Macro Lens feels as if it might fall apart - I purchased the lens new from a US Pentax Dealer several years ago and the warranty is over. The lens has not been dropped or otherwise abused so I not know why it is so loose, Perhaps some internal screws are loose? What are my repair options? Does Precision work on P645 lenses? Phil Lindsay

Thanks

My 45-85 Zoom performs well at F/11 in the 45-60 mm range on P645Z (but not as good as the 55mm AF) but falls down at longer focal lengths so I switch to the 90mm. I wonder if there is enough sample variation to warrant looking for a sharper 45-85?

Help required for Focus Issue

I have been using the back focus button successfully for two years. It sounds your camera may have a defective AF switch or wiring. If you have access to another 645Z Body, you might want to try to isolate the problem to your camera.

Corner crack in 645Z :( Bets on repair time?

Based upon your cracked body issue, perhaps the 645Z needs more protection in the field? In your experience with being extremely hard on equipment do you find the 645Z being more susceptible to damage than other professional grade cameras? Your cracked body has certainly opened my eyes and I am taking more care of my 645Z than before!

Tripod collar add-on for SMC 67 300/4

Initially there is a learning curve trying to figure what rail lengths and clamps are required for the specific lens-camera system and since the system is based around the Arca Standard, the tripod head needs to be Arca compatible. When adjusting the support "Y" bracket, there is a lot of leverage so care must be taken not to distort the camera lens mount. Overall the system works very well for me but there certainly is a lack of convenience as well as cost of the various bits and pieces. THe Chinese are now building some much lower cost rail and clamp components - see the B & H Listings

Corner crack in 645Z :( Bets on repair time?

Is the light colored material cast metal? Does this mean that the body is constructed of cast aluminum and can be damaged by impact? I had originally assumed (wrongly?) that the 645Z Body was waterproof , strong and really tough like a pro Nikon or Canon Body. Based upon your situation I am doubting the toughness - it looks like the 645Z Body may require careful handling. I don't recall that my old 645N film bodies were fragile.

Really Right Stuff has a lens support system that uses a "Y" bracket which provides contact at the outer end of the lens with two rubber covered steel wheels. The bracket is mounted with a couple adjustable Arca Style rails and clamps. It isn't nearly as convenient as a tripod support collar but it does work.

Do you know what caused the damage? Was the camera dropped or struck with hard object?

I imagine that the factory fix will include a new body so you don't have much to lose an epoxy repair fails. The epoxy material is high strength and waterproof so it should work fine. I the have done a lot of epoxy repairs and the key to success appears to be the bond quality so clean the broken surfaces before application. I would avoid the quick setting variety and focus on a metal powder (steel or titanium powder) filled epoxy system and completely mix the two parts prior to application. For less than $10 you can try the repair and if doesn't work just send the camera in for a full factory repair.

Cable release socket failure

When I first got my 645Z several years ago, I fastened the remote release plug into the camera body with duct tape so the electrical connection is semi-permanent. I think repeated use of the connection will weaken the camera internal fitting. The tape is ugly but it does keep the electrical connection secure.

It doesn't appear that the crack has opened - is there any sign of dimension change, warping or potential alignment problem? You might considered using a steel powder filled epoxy to fill in the crack and strengthen the area.

The instructions for upgrading the 645Z firmware under the Mac OS make no mention of the Fwdc224.bin.cpgz file which must be opened to form the Fwdc224.bin file which is required for the upgrade process

I wish I could get Firmware 1.22 to load. Placing a SD card containing the Fwdc224b.bin in slot 1 and holding the menu button while powering up doesn’t work. I have repeated the process several times with a couple different firmware downloads. Any thoughts?

I just purchased a Mamiya 50mm Shift lens which has been modified to fit a Pentax 645 Body from Zörkendörfer Film & Phototechnic in Germany. My experience with this lens on the Mamiya AFD has been very good so hopefully it will do as well on the P645Z.

Thanks for the detailed info on tilt - shift options for the P645 System. Do you have any recommendations for general landscape photography? I am especially interested in the Mamiya 50mm shift lens which I have used with the Mamiya AFD Cameras as well as the Hartbeli 45mm T?S lens which I have also used on the Mamiya Syetem.

Several years ago I looked into the Zork Shift Adapter that allows Pentax 67 lenses to be fit to the P645Z. It is very well made and permits either 45 or 55mm P67 Lenses to shift (but not tilted) however it was very expensive (several thousand dollars). Based upon the last forum poat, It sounds like the price has dropped so that it is now cheaper than the Mamiya 50mm shift lens alternative. Plesse keep the forum informed as to the specific details.

IJ have learned that the modification must be done in Germany and costs $650. Hopefully the shipping and customs can be handled through their US Office. Due the short flange distance of the Pentax 6454 Mount, there are no simple adapters for mounting Mamiya 645 Lenses onto the Pentax 645 Body. The modification consists of removing the Mamiya Mount Assembly and replacing it with a custom mount designed. I believe the factory also sells customized Mamikya 50mm lenses for around $1200. Ihave used the lens on both Mamiya AFD and Leica S2 Bodies.

I have had this lens for over 10 years using it in an Mamiya Mount on a Mamiya AFD3 at first and later having Vitally convert it to a Pentax Mount. It wasn't until I could take advantage of the live view focussing on the 645Z that I could really focus this lens correctly. In my experience it is a better tilt lens than a shift lens. i also use a 50mm Mamiya Shift Lens which is a much better shift lens but unfortunately does not tilt. I would love to have the Mamiya Dhift Lens converted to a Pentax Mount but that would be a costly conversiion. The Hartblei 45mm T/S is the only game in town for Pentax Users (if you can find one in a Pentax Mount and it works well for me in landscape situations requiring depth of field control. The lens isn't very strong for stitched pans or architecture. I received excellent service from Vitally when having the factory convert my lens over to the Pentax Mount for around $125.

I believe the Zork tilt-shift adapter for using P67 lenses on a P645 is limited to lenses with focal lengths greater than 120 mm or so. The shift only Zork adapter will work with P67 lenses 45mm and greater.

Did the previouus thread speak of battery removal as a fix on the K3 and K5 as a fix to a mirror problem or a general camera lockup. I have had my 645Z freeze up such that the contols became inoperative and the top display would not turn off with the on-off switch. Removal of the battery restores all of the camera functions. Is this situation also true of the K3 and K5?

Where did you this wonderful lens and how long did yo have to search for it? It is a very rare (and expensive) lens and is the best 40mm lenses ever offered for the Hassleblad V System. I'm sure you will enjoy it.
