K-5II Aspect Ratio

Thank you Adam & Scratchpaddy for the prompt answers. It makes sense. I often enjoy using the 1:1 Aspect Ratio on the K-01 and wish I could do the same with my K-5. Alas, I just can't find enough reasons to justify getting a K-5II!

Does the K-5II provide the option to select from several Aspect Ratios, like the K-01, or does it have a fixed Aspect Ratio like the older K-5?

Buying new "everyday" lens

As with you, I had tried the 18-55mm kit lens, but was dissatisfied with the performance, so sold it. About six months ago I purchased a Tamron SP AF 28-75mm, f/2.8, and love it. To me, the deciding factor for this purchase was the lens review on PF. Tamron was giving a rebate, perhaps it is still in effect.

Pentax K-01 Compact Case

I have a Golla Bag large enough to carry the K-01 with lenses & accessories, I wanted to get a protective case for my K-01, so I can carry it in the automobile console, coat pocket, etc. w/o fear of loosing the 40mm lens cap or causing damage to the camera. I found a very nice, small case at Walmart for $14.00, and thought perhaps there are others who would appreciate such a case for their new Pentax K-01. Case Logic has produced a Compact Camcorder Case (MSEC4) that will fit the K-01 almost perfectly. It comes in Black or in Dark Blue. The case has a molded protective hard shell front & back and a retractable handle system (a shoulder/neck strap is also included). Inside is a tilt-out padded camera cradle (pocket), which makes it very easy to remove or replace the camera. Over-all size is 6.3"x4.75"x3". The DCPI for the MSEC4 Compact Camcorder Case is 0008585419958 (Dark Blue) and 0008585419857 (Black). Incidentally, this case is large enough to carry the K-01 camera/DA40mm XS lens, spare battery, two or three spare memory cards and lens cleaning cloth. Also, you will find that it is less expensive if ordered on-line. Hope this helps someone.

I think I stopped worrying about the direction Pentax was going, with the K-5. What alot of ragging we had here in PF when (in addition to all else), spots were discovered in the K-5. Had I taken it all seriously at the time, I would have dumped the K-5 and gone to another brand. As it is, I returned one K-5 for spotting, and have since enjoyed using my second K-5 immensely. It is undoubtedly, the best camera I have ever owned. Within the past year I sold a K-x, and recently purchased a K-01. Sure, there are some problems and things I don't really like about the K-01, most of which I immediately aired here on PF. But for almost a week now I have been shooting every day with the K-01 and have found it to be a fun and interesting camera. In fact, while my origional plans were to use it for video and shooting wildlife with a big lens & tripod, I have had so much enjoyment just shooting the 40mm XS - handheld. (OMG) The K-01 even outshines the K-5 sometimes, in the images it produces. (Now don't go taking me to task, this is solely my impression) A full frame from Pentax would be nice, but until then, I'm just having a ball with the cameras Pentax has already provided me.

K-01 images and thoughts about camera

I agree, it is relative, and I am using no test equipment, etc. It is just my impression. Perhaps I am overly sensitive, but when photographing birds or animals at close range, or using the K-5 to shoot my grandaughter's recital, etc., I always feel that I am making alot of audiable noise with the camera. I expected the K-01 to be virtually silent, and that was one of the selling points for me, it is not, and when I use the K-5 & K-01 together, they both sound about the same to me. Again, no audio test equipment used.
Over lunch I was able to get out and use the K-01 under the noon day sun. At times I had to turn the monitor brightness level up to (+) 7, but I could still see it well even with sun glare. That, of course was an origional concern of mine.

K-01 images and thoughts about camera

I have had time now to charge the D-L190 battery and do some shooting around the house. I am disappointed with the noise, the K-01 seems to be nearly as noisy (sound) as the K-5, and I had been hoping for silence when shooting wildlife. The K-01 is a great camera to use when one is wearing glasses. Also, this is the first camera with a display monitor, that I have used without smearing the monitor with nose grease each time I took a shot! I find it easy to use the e-dial to magnify the playback image (up to 16 times), as this is a quick check of focus sharpness, although if you are shooting Lomograph style, this feature is not of much use. I look forward to putting on the FA100 and doing some Macro. I have not yet attached the neck strap (I usually do not use them, as I normally use a Blackrapid RS7 strap), I think any strap attached to the K-01 while tend to make it awkward to use. I have to think about this for a while, as what to do. Incidently, the e-dial on the K-01 is much easier to use than on the K-5, due to size and position.

K-01 images and thoughts about camera

I totally agree that the K-01 is not as comfortable to hold as the K-5. My fingers just don't grasp it comfortably, and my poor thumb just does not know what to do. I also agree that changing the memo card is a pain and that outer flap just seems to be too doggone flimsy to be durable. These are my first impressions. It does look nicer than I expected. One problem I do see that will require some sort of near future solution is how to prevent that very small snap-in 40mm lens cap from getting lost while shooting???

I have purchased both new and used items from Adorama, and have never had a complaint with them. Within the past year I purchased several speed lights (new) that did not work out for me (not a problem with Adorama), and I returned them, no authorization required/questions asked.

Married to the Brand

Since I gave up smoking (many, many years ago), I can't really say I am married to any brand. I use Windows. But that is because it was what I started out with. Use Pentax cameras, but have used others. Most of my lenses are Pentax, although a few other mfgr's have filled in gaps. I have had the same wife for over 40 years, so I guess you could say that I'm sold on her. About the only thing I consistently buy is Long's Horseradish (love Horseradish!) and that is because (a) It is 100% pure, no salt, no sugar, no preservatives and (b) it is grown, grated and sold locally.

Pentax Honeywell Spotmatic 35mm camera with Super-Takumar 55mm 1.8 Lens?

I carried a Honeywell Spotmatic in Nam for 19 months, and a couple of years after. I've never had a camera banged around and treated so badly as that one, but wet or dry it never failed and the pictures were great (well yeh, sometimes there were spots on the lens, but that just gave the photo more character).
Lots of luck with yours, it is an enjoyable camera.
