sure you need croping but i would suggest that when at such an interesting location you go nuts ans shot lots of shots from different locations and crop in the camera as much as possable. the great thing with digital is it cost nothing to click the shutter.

agree with above coments also use a poloriser to bring out the sky and increase detail in the rocks you could also use a ND filter.

also i would suggest manual focus at f1.8 you should have a bright viewfinder image so it should not be difficult.

Ok I admire your approach however,as stated earlier you need to work on composition exposure etc. read the stuff suggested go to the library and look at images of the pros.
and shoot many versions of the same image using diffrent shutter speeds F stops iso settings and angles also bracket shots.
your well on your way enthusiasm is the key that unlocks the door to inner enjoyment

Nice shots looks like you took them a noon. None the less when your traveling you often find yourself at the right place but the wrong time. I like the detail in the images it does make you wonder what is was like to live in that enviornment harsh for sure but also magical.

I wish I recalled the science mag, it might have been popular science a new scanner scans the negative immediatly no waiting, by taking three pictures thru a lens each picture is one of the primary colors red green blue then they are merged with 12 mp resolution its to cost $400.

I am in the process of scanning 35mm b&w negatives with an epson v600 i got from amazon for $180 it is painefully slow at 6400dpi but reasonably quick at 3200 dpi( about a minute per picture) the negatives were around 40 years old. the tiff file were insane 25 mb and larger.I was impressed but then again I know nothing about scanning how many dpi do oyu need for an 8x10 print? is there a formula.
here are two scans of pictures taken 40 years ago in my youth.
Since these were the first scans i've ever done and i am new to digital photo.I'd be interested in your suggestions.

I was pleasently suprised at the quality of the $180 scanner i started out at 800 dpi went to 1200 then 2400 and some at 3200dpi at 6400dpi it was going to take about 80 minutes to do about 9 scans of 35 mm film. the negatives were in relatively good shape . a few with water marks and a few i could have cleaned better for dust. to have these done by a lab would have cost upwards of .75 or more per image. this scanner also came with elements 7 included unfortunatly my computer is old with only one gig of ram and no ability to increase it so these are stright prints off the v600 epson as I could not run elements.
i will post better shots once I can make them more managable.
As an aside one of the many things I enjoy about photography is the ability to freeze the subject in time, sadly in some of these old negatives are dear friends who have passed away.

searching my eves I cameupon negatives of the marti gras 1976.
I also have a question most of the images saved were in tiff and i me jpg file from them but both the tiff and jpg files are over 24 mega bites .how do i make them smaller to post here ? shots were with spotmatic screw mount lens either a 55mm f1,8 or 28mm f3.5.
Hopefully they will be attached they are not the best ones but the only ones small enough to post until i can figure out how to make them smaller.
as you can probablytell i know nothing about image processing.

Hi cleaning out closets and found a very good condition aka new 300m f4 supertakumar( not multicoated model)with tripod ring and sliding lens hood all part of the lens serial no.3602556. its works perfect and no signs of fugus, oil or other nasties.
Also have a super multi coated takumar 55mm f1.8 serial5378652 and smc takumar 28mm f3.5 serial7811180 in rough condition. while the glass is and focusing is flawless on both the 55mm is stuck in the auto position bent switch it works perfict. the 28 mm while also stuck in the auto system with the same bend in switch( auto manual switch) bent switch its shutters will not respond. Anyway is there any market for these lens or should i just trash them?
i have a picture of the 300mm which i will attempt to post.
anywayif there is a market i will consider selling but i do not have a pay pal thing so that might be a problem. i tried posting on craigs list but got no responce. if there is someone who could use these let me know I even consider donating them to worthy cause.

hey just found my earlier post on the subject so it looks like the 300mm is only worth about 60 bucks nd perhaps my others lenssmay not be broke but i think they are. anyway if youwat them let me know as i have no use for them. if your interested i will post them for sale here as i do not want to circumvent my donation obligation.

Hi i'm a new member I have a f4 300mm super takumar with the internal lens hood and attached tripod ring serial 3602556 asahi lens which I bough( along with many other SMC lens ) from a buddy returning from viet nam( he purchased the lens in Japan with the spotmatic slr ) over 40 years ago. The lens is flawless in excellent shap 9+ out of 10 honest ( glass flawless, no dust, no mold no rust, no dings shutter is flawless the action is smooth as silk amazing after so long not in use ! it has been in my closet in a chest for that period of time I forgot I had it !
Anyway I was wondering is there a market for such a lens? and if so what is it worth? is it a good lens optically? can it be used on a Pentax DSLR as I will be taking photography up now that I am retired and if i can buy a converter and the lens has good optics ( compared to todays lens)

I also have the f1.8 55mm SMC and the F3.5 28mmSMC but sadly they were stored in the atic in another box and did not fair so well the manual auto f stop switch on both are now stuck one was dropped the other ?
thanks Scott
