Best flash under 100$?

The wireless system can be a more reliable way to trigger the flash. I would recommend starting with just the flash and then pick up a wireless trigger at a later time or if the need arises as inexpensive ones can be found on eBay.

When I first started acquiring gear I adopted the mentality of needing every accessory I read about just to start. Now that I have been listening more and more to established photographers, I am trying to keep it simple and get to know the gear I have. If I come up against obstacles I try and overcome them creatively. If something is just not working no matter what I try, then I will consider gear upgrades. Just a little friendly advice. Best of luck.

Lovemehate, the optical thingy on the 460ii and the 560 isn't a Pentax thing. It is a built in sensor (in the flash itself) that senses a flash of light and triggers the flash to fire when it is not connected to the hotshoe of the camera.
Here is my experience with the two flashes. I use them to light interiors for real estate purposes. I have the 460ii set up off camera and hooked up to a radio transmitter, like the Cactus V5 that has been mentioned previously, and my 560's set up around the room to provide more light if needed. I use the 560's built in optical sensor to trigger all of them. I have placed the 560 in other rooms and around corners and have never had a problem with them not going off. I have heard that if an emergency vehicle goes by with it's lights flashing, it will trigger the optical sensor in the 560.
The other thing the 560 has over the 460ii is a zoom function. This allows you to focus the beam more tightly if you are shooting at a longer focal length (I don't know if your type of shooting would find this useful but just thought I would mention it.)
Finally, there is a podcast I listen to called CameraDojo and the guy who does it did a review on the 560. here is a link to the review:

Hi there, I thought I would chime in to try and help out. I am new to photography too but I own the YN-560 and the YN-460 ii. I think another poster touched on something regarding using your flash off-camera (which I have heard many people highly recommend over on camera) that I think is important. Both the YN-560 and YN-460 ii have built in optical sensors. This means that besides using the flash on-camera and with a wireless radio trigger, the flash can also be triggered by the pop-up flash on the camera. The YN-460 ii has a decent optical sensor but the YN-560 has a better one that will even work pretty well outdoors. If that would work for you, you wouldn't even need a radio trigger right away even though they are cheap enough. Just wanted to share my two cents.

There are some helpful comments here, thank you. I have only been into photography as a hobby for several months so I am certainly under no delusions that one of my first photos would win a contest. I am rather unimpressed with the picture as currently composed but given that this contest started in mid-september, the likelyhood that there have been many fall month submissions to compete against is probably low as this hasn't been advertised well. As I mentioned, I am probably going to submit the picture and see what happens. I am also thinking about taking some winter shots (we just got our first snowfall today) and I will try to incorporate some of your suggestions. Any idea where I can rent a tilt-shift lens? And aren't they difficult to use properly?
Thanks again for the advice.

Hey everyone, I am hoping to get some feedback on this shot I am thinking about entering into a local contest. The contest is for inclusion in a calendar that a local State Park is going to be putting out. They are looking for pictures of the grounds that showcase some of the interesting features of the park. I chose this mansion with a backdrop of fall foliage. Please let me know if there is anything I can or should do to make this better. I would also like your opinion on whether or not you would enter this into the contest (I probably am either way but would like the feedback).
Thanks!

edit: perhaps this should be in the landscape category...

Thanks, I didn't have much, the 18-55 kit lens, 75-300 lens from Best buy and a 50mm 2.0. I only had that camera for 3 months. It took nice pics but I was already running up against the limits of the camera (ISO performace mostly). It's funny, I also just joined a local camera club and when I told them that I was going from a Canon to a Pentax I think I heard some gasps...
I still haven't received my camera yet but from what I hear, I'll put my Kr with good glass up against their T2i with good glass.

This is a great reference. I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out which lenses need adapters, which to watch out for that dreaded "Ricoh pin", etc. I will be back often as I get more into Pentax and start building my kit.

Hi, I am just getting started in photography and am at an unusual place right now. I have sold my Canon gear (shipped to new owner today) and am waiting for my new Kr kit to come in (by the end of the week I am told). I feel like I am missing a part of me not having a camera by my side. I am mostly into nature shooting and photographing my kids but hopefully I will start taking more sports shots as that is of high interest to me. I'm looking at putting together some gear still and will only have the kit lens (18-55mm only) right now. I have been looking around Ebay and already can see a LBA forming.
Anyway, I see a couple lenses in the marketplace that will help so I better get my 3 posts in quickly! Any lens reccomendations for shooting indoor sports and possibly real estate interiors would be greatly appreciated.
Take care!
