12-24, DA* 16-50 for architecture and landscape,
+ FA77 for portraits.
what else? :)

It seems from the graph that the best correction is zero.
This is because zero has the lower dispersion.
This kind of analysis should plot also the standard deviation, to understand dispersion.
Try to reduce distance and repeat analysis.:)

My K-5 autofocus is extremely better than my old k-x, for both speed and precision.
Except in low light, where k-5 is slower (sometime frustrating) than k-x but more accurate.

I agree, 55-300 works much better in direct light than my 18-55 and tamron 17-50.
I guess due to an higher focus ring angle variation-->better distance estimation-->better flash exposure!

I think Pentx introduced with k-5 a sort of correction depending on estimated focus distance. Try to take a picture at the same subject changing manually the focus distance. Also if blurred, flash exposure changes with the distance itself.

Don't worry!
As I said in my previous post I will try with a first guess exposure value = -1 in direct light to avoid burn lights and use raw file to compensate exposure in pp.

I agree, Manual MODE work well and displayed distance is coherent with flash Power!
It is strange, but if I change the Flash Power in Manual MODE, until the displayed distance is the same of the subject distance, the exposure is correct!
--> Flash is able to estimate the flash distance depending on Aperture, ISO and Focal length properly --> p-ttl correction is WRONG!

Thanks to everyone for answers.
Let me summarize my situation:
- I have already updated firmware of both k-5 and Metz to the latest version.
- Overexposure happens only with direct light and flash mounted on hot shoe.
- Overexposure happens with both Tamron 17-50 and Pentax 18-55 lens.
- Internal flash works well :)
- Metz was working well with my k-x + Tamron 17-50 or Pentax 18-55 :hmm:
- I'm able to obtain good results reducing flash exposure of about 1 stop (but changing the focal length I have to adjust again the flash exposure, results are "unpredictable for me")
- I work with fixed ISO value, usuali in M or Av mode.
- I follow this rule as indicated in Metz user Manual: "The subject ought to be in the area of approximately 40% to 70% of the value
displayed. This will give the automatic exposure control sufficient scope for compensation. To avoid overexposure, the minimum distance should be no less than
10% of the indicated value! Adjustment to the photographic situation at hand can be achieved by, for example, changing the aperture of the setting on the lens"
By the way, the system is working properly in wireless and bounced mode. I have to accept to start with a best guessing value of -1 in the flash exposure compensation (with direct light only).:hmm::hmm:

Hi,
I have had in the past a Pentax k-x with Metz 50 AF1. They was working well together (just a little underexposure sometime).
Using the same lens and the same Flash, my k-5 give unconsistent results, expecially with direct light and flash mounted on the hot shoe (usually there is a big overexposure).
I know, I have to fix ISO, use M or A mode and reduce exposure of about 1 stop...
but the questions are:
why my k-x was working better than my k-5?
Why Pentax does not release a firmware to fix this problem?

Thanks for answer.
I think I will not have the courage to disassemble my lens.
Dust will remain inside.:o:D
Wich solvent did you use to clean contacts?

See my previous post.
I think that lens with a long focus ring stroke give more accurate distance estimation (eg. my 55-300 works fine, Tamron overexposes).
"A" lens do not communicate distance. So A lens should work as in case of bounced flash.
This is my idea. May be Pentax introduced a correction depending on distance starting from k-5...

In my opinion the problem is related to a wrong (or not accurate) communication of focus point distance from the camera to the flash (in direct light).
Please check differences in exposition when you change focus distance (in manual mode).
At small focal length, there is more approximation in distance evaluation --> more overexposition.
Moreover, when the light is bounced on a wall, the exposition is correct enough (it do not use focal length).
Another think is related to the flash power. 50 is a very big power for very close distance.
If you have a look on Flash manual, Metz says:
"The subject ought to be in the area of approximately 40% to 70% of the value
displayed. This will give the automatic exposure control sufficient scope for compensation. To avoid overexposure, the minimum distance should be no less than
10% of the indicated value! Adjustment to the photographic situation at hand can
be achieved by, for example, changing the aperture of the setting on the lens"

I sold my k-x to buy a k-5.
I'm very happy of my choise.
In term of image quality and High ISO performance, I didn't find a big difference.
I think they are (jpeg) quite similar.
The best improvements in my opinion, are:
-fine AF adjust --> better results in terms of AF precision:)
- AF.C works!:D:D:D
- Liveview is really usable in k-5:eek:
- better access to commands (expecially I like exposure method and AF selectors + double ring).:) --< you can change setting very fast
- strong personalization in terms of P mode, ISO curves, ISO priorities, USER mode.
- better AF performance in artificial light
At the end, I think that k-5 shall be considered a "must" if you need one of these improvements.

Are you speaking about SDM lens?
My k-x works better with screw drive lens. FA 50 is much faster than DA 55.
I don't know if k-5 works better than k-x with SDM lens...
edit message:
Just to point out:
Replace FA50 with 70 or 77 is not for AF speed, but because I prefere a longer focal for portraits.
Replace camera is for both handling and AF speed.
I have limited money, so I have to decide what to do before...

I know...
I'm just wondering if replace my FA50 with a 70 or 77mm lens, or update camera before...

OK, I'm interested in accuracy more than speed. Expecially in artificial light.
I agree, could be the better improvement is the fine tune AF per lens. And this could improve the AF accuracy.
