Why A K-S1 Instead Of The K-50 / K-30?

Body of K-50 is great compared to K-S1. K-50 looks leather while K-S1 is plastic. The idea of LEDs in the grip, sensor without AA filter and AA simulator, is great. But the feeling is too amateur and too plastic which gives you a cheap feeling.
I would prefer same lightweight but leather coated and deeper grip would give me a feeling of more expensive camera. I prefer K-50

I presume brand value and recognition of Pentax is more than Ricoh. The company should stick and continue with the brand of "Pentax". Nearly 100 years of habit will disappear with the egocentric approach of Ricoh on naming. Pentax users get used to this brand. Even they called themselves as "Pentaxians". Accumulated information on Pentax Forums. What a big mistake to spoil this synergy of years. Changes in technology or style is greatly appreciated. But change on naming, what a useless pursuit. Instead, Ricoh should consider to add swivel screen or better video recording with continuous AF like the competitors. Be innovative.

I wish Pentax had an auto focus in movie

Unfortunately my brand new Pentax k-r has been stolen from my car 2 months ago. Instead of buying the same camera I wanted to try another one for the following reasons.
1) I was looking for a camera with auto focus capability during movie shot. I really wanted to combine both camera and camcorder with auto focus in movie.
2) Tilting screen for convenience shot.

With these two specs in mind, I have been addressed to a sony translucent SLT A33. I purchased it.
I have no motivation to take photograph for about two months. No intention to have the camera in my hand. After my Pentax k-r, sony didn't satisfy me at all. I'm not here to blame sony but more to share my experience with you and to take the attention of Pentax company to the importance of auto focus issue for some users.

I've been walking around in the forums and I see that for some photographer movie is not important, while for the others like me it is important. Please think it like a walk around lens. People don't want to replace lens in different distances and they prefer to buy a walk around lens such as 18-200mm etc. They want to combine tele and zoom. This wish is like walk around lens. Walk around camera. Both camera and camcorder in one device.

The feature is ok in the sony SLT. But the build quality and image quality is never comparable with my Pentax k-r. Sony lens is not so sharp. It is too plastic and like a toy. I wish Pentax had the same feature and I could buy the same Pentax k-r again.

I read some rumors about Pentax Translucent mirror technology. How true is this I don't know. Is there any rumor about when it will be available in the market? I will wait for some more time. But my next camera will be definitely another Pentax. And I will sell my Sony to fund my Pentax purchase.

I miss my pentax k-r so much.

New K-r owner with some lenses

Hi Ovim,
I understand why you set it between the min and max values of the lens. But for the old 35mm SLR camera lenses we should multiply it by 1,5 shouldn't we? That was what I read in the user manual. Or based on your experience to leave it as the lens value.
According to your suggestions I should set SR to (210-70)/2*1,5 that makes 105. Is that what you suggest? Thanks.

Hi ajw85
I do not know about those lenses in your hands. But I got similar experience. I have a Tokina SD 70-210 lens from 70’s I believe. It is very old. I use it in my brand new Pentax k-r.
In order to use it some necessary settings are as follows.
1) Set internal focal length. Because it is an old lens that is used with 35mm cameras, we should set internal focal length to the value of used lens focal length multiplied by 1.5. For this lens I set it up to 300 (Approximately 210 X 1.5). This setting is activated automatically, when you attached the lens into the k-r first time power on.
2) Use manual focus (MF) instead of AF.
3) For the old lens it is better to set aperture settings to “permitted” from the custom menu page 4, Option 22. Otherwise you should set the aperture ring to “A” on the lens. Other options don’t work with the k-r using old lens. You have error notification when you turn on your camera.
I hope it helps you how to use old lens with k-r. Have nice shots.

I'm looking forward for your pictures Mystic to see the performance of kr at very low light. By the way is the lens effect the low light AF? I didn't know that. Whick pentax or sigma or tamron lenses are suitable for low light?
Thanks in advance.

My experience with K-r

Hi guys,
I bought my k-r a month ago. My expectation was to combine both still image and camcorder in one device. High ISO, CMOS sensor, HDR, crisp images. Pentax kx, kr or Sony SLT A 33 was in my short list. I have picked up pentax k-r after I have seen autofocus speed and AF light. It is something like it fits you and intuitively you know which button is doing what. Also I liked the way of display where the only necessary info is highlighted with capital letters. It’s clear. I didn’t hesitate to buy it.

I didn’t like AF in video in first days, because it was my misunderstanding of what AF is in the video recording. But on the other hand I’m much more satisfied with the still image of my k-r. I will not consider capturing video with my k-r. Image quality is superb particularly in high ISO. Filters are great fun. No need to a PC for simple processing on the images after photo taken. I didn’t try macro shots yet.

My serial number starts with 384**** but I don’t know what is means? I have heard about the new firmware update and I will update it in the following days. I don’t know what it will bring, but I’m sure some necessary patches are available. I will look for a tele lens for my k-r later on. I’m very happy with this camera and autofocus issue is something that I haven’t seen much problem. I’m so satisfied with the k-r performance and features. I’m one of the pentaxians now.

I'm totally agree with you ricoh. It would be so nice if Pentax had distributed the AA adapter with k-r. I would feel myself more comfortable with this addition. This feature was one of the trigger of my selection of k-r. But it is not included. Just a cheap plastic part that is not delivered. This is a disappointment for me.

Thanks folks. I got it now. I had understood continuous focus as continuously recording during movie record. But I got it now, continuous focus is for the still images during high speed shot. Thanks for the support.

This means continuous focus is not continuous focus. Can we re focus pressing the shutter half way again when needed? I will try that. But MF,CF terms has been confusing for me. Not a simple or my understanding was not ok.

I tried to record movie and wanted to have an AF effect of video camera like. When object, or camera moves I wanted AF refocused accordingly.
Can someone give me a hand about how to do it. I'm new on k-r.

anyone did Kx to Kr?

I have started with k-r. But I had an intention to buy k-x. The reason of my choice on k-r has been as follows;
1) Very fast AF in LV
2) Focus LED on viewfinder.
3) Both AA and LION batteries possibility.
4) Other minor upgrades on higher ISO etc.
But overall I'm very happy with the choice of k-r.

Sticky: K-r vs K-x

I bought my k-r 10 days ago. When you compare two camera with their specs, it seems there are not much difference between k-x and k-r. My preset was on Pentax k-x before I go to buy it for budgetary reason. When I have used k-x, I have disappointed with the Live view auto focus speed. I have seen k-r nearby on the shelf and wanted to use it. Gosh it was flying in my click. I loved the magnifying rectangle on the screen during auto focus in live view. The only issue was price difference, but I found a cash refund campaign from Pentax in Germany. So k-r had been in a reasonable one for me in terms of price. Thanks Pentax. I have also bought an old second hand zoom lens from 1970s from Tokina. Unbelievably it works. Needless to say no auto focus but it's ok till I buy a real lens. I'm so happy with the k-r decision instead of k-x.

The items I hadn't like with Pentax k-x was as follows;
No auto focus lights on the pentamirror viewfinder.
AA batteries, (It is a matter of preference)
Slower on live view auto focus compared to k-r.

Auto focus speed on live view has been main reason of my choice of Pentax k-r instead of k-x
