I only have a Jupiter-9. I wouldn't mind picking up a few more, especially a wide angle, like a 16mm, but the funds aren't there right now. Here are a few shots, click through for larger versions.

Sticky: DA lenses on Full Frame: Test Shots thread

They would probably do what Nikon does and crop the inner 50% of the pixels.

But if you buy a full-frame camera, you won't buy the DA 17-70mm, you'd buy a 28-105mm lens, which is the FoV the 17-70mm is trying to reproduce on APS-C sensors.

I wish I could buy this lens just to look at it and touch it...

And I love that on the aperture ring there is a 2...and then right next to it a 1.9, like it's saying yeah, f/1.9, I go there. :D

Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8. Purchased only recently, but already been on my camera for many hours. It's my first Tamron (although I also have the 1.4x TC), and I'm very happy so far.

Mirror lenses are more easily shot in Av mode, so the camera sets the appropriate shutter speed (and you can add EV comp. to taste); no Green Button needed, though the K100D does have one, except it's not green and is labelled 'AE-L'

Keep ISO as low as possible while ensuring shutter speed is faster than 1/500s. If you have a K100D Super (which has image stabilisation) you can get away with slower speeds. This assuming you're shooting handheld; if using a sturdy tripod you can shoot at slower speeds too.

If you want, you can shoot in M mode, but make sure you understand the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and ISO first.

Hope this helps!

Full length (super)telephoto portraits?

Pardon me if I seem curt and conceited, but I'm getting tired of posting this time and again on different posts all over the forum whenever this theme comes up:

Given a fixed subject size within the frame, the Depth of Field (DoF) depends exclusively on the aperture being used.

So, taking the picture of the girl on the tracks as an example: Whatever lens you use to take that picture, 28mm, 50mm, 200mm or 300mm, as long as the girl is the same size in each photo, the DoF will be exactly the same as long as each picture is shot at f/2. What will change is the amount of background included in the frame; the wider the focal length, the more surroundings you will capture. Longer focal lengths can appear to have a smaller DoF simply because they include less background in the frame; this is due to changing perspective, and is one of the reasons we have lenses of varying focal lengths. All this is true for a given sensor size, so don't compare between full-frame, APS-C and 4/3.

If you don't believe me, plug the numbers into a DoF calculator. Use a constant aperture (say f/2.8), and the following pairs of focal lengths (in mm) and distances-to-subject (in meters) that will ensure your subject appears the same size in every frame:

25mm + 5m
50mm + 10m
100mm + 20m
200mm + 40m
300mm + 60m

Please, pass this message along. I'm getting tired of having to write it out again and again.

Samsung NX lens roadmap for 2012: five new lenses, NX20 and NX1
Posted By Miserere

I had been on the fence about the Samsung NX system ever since I reviewed the NX10 over a year ago; this roadmap tipped me over the edge and I just purchased an NX10 + 20-50mm + 30mm kit. The NX10 is far from perfect, but it's still the best MILC I've tested so far (for my needs and tastes—yours may vary), and it will tide me over until the NX20 hits stores in a few months. I'll also be purchasing the 16mm f/2.4 and 55mm f/1.8.

The reason I'm choosing the NX system is primarily because of the prime pancake lenses. There should definitely be zooms in a mirrorless lineup, but these cameras truly shine when you couple them with a pancake lens. The Sony NEX-7 seems like a fantastic body, but the primes are very large, and the zooms huge, completely negating the point of having a mirrorless camera in the first place. Samsung seem to get this, proven by the fact they released the 30mm f/2 from day 1 of the NX system. Meanwhile, we're still waiting for Pentax to issue a fastish, compact, affordable 30mm DA prime (no, the 35mm f/2.4 doesn't qualify) some 8 years after they released their first APS-C digital camera. The NX10 body has a Pentax feel about it, ergonomic, with many direct access buttons; I immediately felt at home the first time I picked it up.

Think about this, it took the µ4/3 players 2 years and 8 months (and 2 companies!) to produce a prime trio: Olympus 12mm f/2, Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 and Olympus 45mm f/1.8. If Samsung stick to their roadmap, they'll have done it about 8 months quicker, and offering two options at the wide end, 16mm and 20mm. Furthermore, Panolympus still don't have a 90mm-equiv. macro or a 135mm-equiv f/1.4. Sony NEX still doesn't have an affordable, small normal prime for its system. I won't hammer the point in any further: Samsung are producing more primes than the rest of the mirrorless competition, and that's important to me.

Pentax can still come back and make a great MILC, but with Ricoh having the GXR I have my doubts that it will happen. I like the GXR a lot, but the lens choices aren't there yet, and I'm not sold on the whole concept of marrying the sensor to the lens. I also like being able to use (with limitations) all my manual focus Pentax primes on the NX10, but if the NX20 delivers what NX10 owners expect it will, I foresee selling much of my Pentax kit to purchase NX lenses.

Samsung might be a new player, but they are building quality optics at the right focal lengths, right size, and right price. In a way, they are doing in the mirrorless market what Pentax were doing a few years ago in the DSLR market.

There were rebate sheets at the booth (you can see them in some of my photos) offering rebates as VISA prepaid cards; they expired some time this week I think. I have one at home; I can take a look this evening if you want.

As for generalised rebates, I wasn't told either yes or no, so I think they might be considering them, or they've decided to have them but didn't want to announce it yet since they are currently offering rebates.

I'm sure that was Sony's thinking for the A33/55. Of course, they could afford to think that way because they already have a small MILC, sorry, CSC :p system in the NEX.

I don't know what Pentax will decide for their CSC, whether a new registration distance or just taking the mirror/prism out, but whatever they do, they have to think about the long run, not just the short-term sales. In 1-2 years time, if a first-time buyer is faced with choosing between a slim Samsung NX25 and a chunky Pentax K3M, what do you think they will choose?

Photokina 2010, Pentax and the full frame mystery

C'mon Falk, you should know by now that everything on PF is an APS-C vs FF debate :D

QuoteQuote:

It was about Pentax communication strategy in a situation where it becomes likely that the entire APSC dSLR market will move full frame some day (partly to counteract the SLDs).

Many expect or expected Pentax to say something about full frame at Photokina 2010. My News is that they don't plan to do so. And my proposed discussion is about the consequences of said silence. Not the benefits of APSC or FF...

Those who expected Pentax to make an announcement of this sort do not understand how Japanese businesses operate. They are not open about what they do except amongst others within the industry, but never with their clients (you and me). The CEO of Nikon was publicly saying they would not release a FF Nikon until literally 2 weeks before the announcement of the D3 in August 2007. Pentax will not announce a FF camera until at the very least they have a mockup to display under glass.

I agree that it would help Pentax's image to announce that there will be a FF in the future, but that's not how the guys in Tokyo see it.

As for communications with their international outlets, these are kept to a need-to-know basis. I've spoken to enough people who work for these companies to know that they are nothing more than sales departments. If a FF were to be released in 2011 (but not announced at Photokina), none of the international Pentax groups would know about it. I would venture a guess that the heads-up time is something like 6-8 weeks, enough time to get the sales brochures translated, the website redesigned and notify the big camera outlets to create a new item # and send them pics to prepare their own preorder pages.
