First thing is to say thank you for the replies from all parties.
I have discovered what the problem is - the lens used is an old one which does not have automatic focus.
I have bought an appropriate lens for my camera now and it works like a dream!

Dear Readers, :)
This is my first post as a proud owner of a new Pentax KX camera. I have used as ME Super for many years but have now graduated to the KX.
My main question is this. I have attached an old lens to my new camera and it does not seem to want to work. The lens is an AUTO-PROMURA CP Hi-Lux MC 1:4:5 f=80-200mm lens.
When I look through the viewfinder I am faced with a blackout. nb. the lens cap is not on!
Is there something obvious I am not doing which is stopping me using this lens?
