Metz 58 AF-2 with Pentax K5

Just a little thought if wanting to use the servo manual mode on the Metz (50 and 58)... the pre flash suppression (recent firmware update) which allows the flash to be used in the 'dumb' mode will only work well and consistently at 1/4 power or less when triggered wirelessly using the camera internal flash. It has something to do with the higher flash output needing more time to prepare than what the camera can give. Pentax have stated that this 'dumb' Servo mode was originally designed so that the flash capabilities could be used by other cameras etc.

I can confirm after testing that at 1/4 power (or less) the flash works flawlessly in Servo on the K5 but at 1/2 it works intermittently and at 1/1 power, regularly fails to fire correctly at all. (However Pttl mode works fine for me in all situations). (Would need a better trigger system to get the full benefit of full power Servo unfortunately)

K5 Exposure Compensation in Manual Mode

@Klaus:- Many thanks for your info... it really has solved an issue for me. I was trying to figure out whether to shoot my off camera Metz 50 AF1 from my K5 in Servo (dumb) mode of in SLave using Pttl (using the K5 internal flash in commander mode). The only problem that I had with Pttl in wireless slave mode was that every time I adjusted the manual exposure on my camera, the flash (using Pttl) would take that as the NEW exposure rather than a mere correction that I was wanting to make to the actual flash intensity. Using your 'very quick' method of EC on the K5, I have tested it with great results and I can easily adjust the flash (on camera) up to +/- 5 stops!!!. This is much better than manually adjusting the EV on each flash that I use!

Could I also ask another point as you may well be able to advise... I am keen on getting an extra AF58 2 so as to do portraits (key and fill etc) but was unsure if this method of flash control would work on two external flashes? I would really want the key light to be firing at a higher intensity than the fill but would that just be a case of simply manually adjusting the EV compensation on each flash before I start in order to try to get the ratio correct? (I am after a 3:1 ratio with an occasional 2:1 for studio)

Just for those in a similar position, I have found that in SERVO mode (dumb slave mode) the Metz 50 and 58 will not fire correctly on full (1/1) or half (1/2) power using the K5 flash as a commander mode only due to the pre flash of Pttl. You need to use 1/4 power or less then it works fine, took me time to research that one, which is why I have opted for Pttl slave with the onboard flash used only as a trigger in commander mode.

When will it be safe to buy a K5?

Just sent my K-5 back after a week of use after discovering the sensor stains. After advice from here I realised that the camera's inbuilt sensor detection does not pick them up but after a few 'snowy' landscape shots I saw them and checked further.

Well it has now gone back for replacement from Amazon. However, I am not so sure that the 'body only' packs are selling faster. The 18-55WR kit is discounted so much at amazon(uk) that for a very small extra amount of cash ($35), it is more of a deal not to be missed. This is proved by the fact that the Amazon.co.uk site is currently out of stock on the 18-55WR kit but has plenty of the others (body only and two lens kit).

I hope that this will be good for me!!! Due to the fact that it will be 3 to 5 weeks before they have stock, then I am hoping that I will get a stain free camera!

It seeems strange that Amazon seems expects to be out of stock for so long... I hope this is because Pentax are not shipping new stock until they have fixed the problem! Normally Amazon are regarded as a key distributor and are given priority when it comes to stock.... I think there is more to be read into this fact.

Sensor Stains - A Worklow Workaround

After owning my K-5 camera for a week I did another check after taking some 'real world' shots (landscape snow scenes) and due to the small aperture immediately noticed the sensor stains on all shots. Following the gudiance I carried out further test and can confirm the marks in the centre of the sensor.

I am an optimist though and I am not consumed by it but I will still send it back to Amazon tomorrow for a replacement as it is not good for the type of photos and aperture sizes that I regularly use (and I have another good camera to use in the meantime). However, I did consider whether to hold on and use the following method to deal with the problem:

Possible workaround:
I did consider setting up an 'Action' on Photoshop to batch process or individually correct the shots (via Spot Healing Tool), removing the marks automatically which would be simple to do as the marks are always in the same place (obviously prior to any cropping).

Has anyone else considered this? I just thought it may be of help to some members who were not really wanting to send their camera back at the moment and wanted a simple workaround for now by pushing a single button to remove all the marks at once.

Hope this may benefit one or two out there :D

Just received my K-5 from Amazon over the past week (last of their current batch) and as soon as I received it I used the camera facility to identify any sensor dust or stains and it was all ok. No problems detected at all.

Managed to get a great deal from them too (but watch out for their prices changing every couple of days!) I ordered mine with the 18-55WR lens for £1069 to find a day later it had dropped to £1018-00. A simple phone call and they gladly refunded the difference! (Together with the current Pentax cashback offer I managed to save 25% off the RRP (my deal cot me £890 - fantastic offer!)

hope this helps

Firstly, as a new member, just a hello to you all and as a keen reader of the forum over the past few weeks, a BIG thank you in helping me make the jump from Sony to Pentax for my next big purchase.

Simply put, what a camera this K-5 is. I've only had it a few days but as a lover of reading manuals (quite sad I know!) and finally getting my hands on this, the noise levels and dynamic range immediately jumps out at me.

I have already done comparitive shots between my Sony A700 (which I intend to still keep - for now!) and the K-5 and what gets me immediately is that this is a new generation of camera, i's simply that good.

There was no way I was going to wait any further for the new Sony A7XX after already waiting over a year and in part, I am so pleased that Pentax (who pioneered the DSLR) are back in the forefront of development.

It comes to something that the only niggle I can force out about the camera (after trying for quite some time) is that I do not believe the Mode dial needs the added security of the locking button on the top!

I would be really keen to hear from other members what settings they tend to use for Landscape shots etc.

Cheers,
Dave
