Perhaps a person just can make the choice to not participate in being part of the book? In groups I am in - these books are usually well received as a nice project. As far as proceeds, I believe there are none. Awaiting Adam on this, I think there is another thread that is just about the book though .......... could be along wait here!

I thought to follow up on what I decided to do. Time Machine is on one external drive and Carbon Copy Cloner on a second external hard drive. One drive backs ups the entire Mac. The other just iPhoto, where the photos are stored. Have yet to remove the photos completely from the internal hard drive.

As mentioned in 12-14 post below I am not keeping the files on the computer. I have 28,000 photos - they need to go to other media. As mentioned once I backup the computer with these photos, they are gone - yes they will be removed from the systems backup drive.

I do need to retrieve the files from the second external hard drive which will have only photos - will need to see thumbs.
Other types of storage will be done - the first issue is to get these off the computer and on to that external hard drive which is only for photos.

I do not know what to do with this drive for photos as far as software.

Thank you!

"Hello,
I am looking for information on moving all my photos from the iMac computer hard drive to an external drive. The external would be for photos only. I do not know how to do this - what software would I need to put on this drive for photos only? I want to be able to move photos to this drive as I make them...

I do have a HD backup for the computer. Am looking to keep or store photos on another drive.

I realize that as I remove them from the computer the back up drive in place will update and show no photos on the computer once I move them to the photos only external drive.

I do have a few favorite digital prints around I plan to shoot on medium format black and white. Will get back into the traditional darkroom to print those for family. As far as anyone carrying on a digital archive or file I will leave behind one day ... family currently appreciates old fashioned slide shows and silver prints. As digital photo frames evolve hopefully that will solve passing along some family photos. Whatever other media digital work is on will just have to go with me in the end!

The SuperDuper software I would load on the external drive ( after the drive is formatted ) and that is all as far as software on that drive, is that correct? The Mac will be able to read it ( sorry - this is new to me )?
Do you know if SuperDuper shows thumbs... I can certainly test it out but appreciate any further info you can help with.

Plus I can add SuperDuper to the other external drive which is the back up drive for my computer system?

Yes- my concern is once I remove photos from the computers drive - the unit which is the system backup drive will eventually erase the pics which are no longer on the computers drive.

I will have one external drive with just photos and the second with or without(!) those which have been backed up along with the computer system. Also will be using something else - maybe another external drive.

Many thanks for all the responses. Looking forward to more discussion.
