need help choosing a lens

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. After some careful thought, I've decided to go with the 31mm limited. There's no major risk in doing so as the limiteds seem to hold their value very well in the preowned market.

[*]What are you going to take pictures of? Interiors, exteriors, architecture, landscapes, citiscapes, Walkaround, Street views, or ?

Street views and walkaround describes me pretty well
[*]What do you want the lens to do for you?

Basically I want something that takes pictures as well or better than the 50 1.4 but isn't as long as the 50, a lot of times I find myself wishing the 50 was a tad wider.
[*]Do you want auto focusing or are willing to consider manual focusing?

I need autofocus
[*]Auto aperture or are you willing to consider manual aperture lenses?

auto aperture
[*]Are you leaning towards primes or zooms?

I don't mind either as long as the IQ is there... However, there's something really appealing about the limited primes... if I only wanted good zooms I would have gone Nikon or Canon..
[*]How fast - faster than f2.8 or can it be slower?

2.8 or faster...
[*]Does size and weight matter? Pocketable?

Nope.. as long as it fits inside my bag I'm cool with it..
[*]Best image quality - or better than what you currently have?

Best IQ...

Hello guys,

I bet this question gets asked about a million times here, but I'll go ahead and ask it again...

I have a 1,000$ budget to get a new lens(es). Right now, my pentax lens collection= the 17-70 F4 and an fa50 1.4.. Usually the 50mm stays on my cam and I'm always wishing it was wider. That sort of pushes me towards the 31mm limited but some people here say the 43mm f1.9 is a better/sharper lens so maybe I should get that + another lens? (maybe the DA 21mm?). I was also looking into the 16-50 2.8 but that motor worries me. I also thought about getting the tammy 70-200 but I hardly ever find myself wishing I had more range. What would you guys get in my situation?

I love the colors now, specially how the sky goes from blue to white to orange... it gives the picture a warmer atmosphere. The original was just too gray for me.

You're right...

I tend to oversaturate my images.. It doesn't look natural but I just find it pleasing to my eyes. I guess it's a personal thing... I'd love to see what that picture looks like with an oversaturated/high contrast sky.. :p

Did you shoot raw?

I'm a total noob as far as editing goes, but maybe if you raised exposure a tad, fiddled with the contrast and saturation, and then use a graduated filter to bring the sky back you might be able to bring out the colors in the picture. I really like #2...

There's also some vignetting.. but that's easy to correct.

The green and purple colors are indeed reflections from the surrounding walls...

The guy is drinking from a bottle!

I don't have an external flash to bounce with right now, and the in-camera flash looks too harsh for my taste. I agree that the 50mm isn't optimal, but since I just started out with pentax, I only have the 50mm 1.4 and the 17-70 F4 right now.. and the latter isn't fast enough for lowlight conditions(while staying under ISO 6400 and not using flash)

Hey Guys,

Alright... so a few test shots with my new K5. These were all done under extremely tough lighting conditions. (as you can see from the exifs) Still getting used to shooting digital with an SLR (as all my previous experience is with film) Let me know what you all think... I'm very impressed with the low light performance.

Not too interesting.. I still like how it came out though.. this is my girlfriend and I took the picture so there's a certain bias

I couldn't get the colors to come out the way I like them... so I made it B&W and I thought it's sort of interesting..

The color version of the above... I couldn't get that thin overexposed line above the hand to look right without screwing up everything else. It's very contrasty and looks a little too overdone IMO... I tried tweaking with it but nothing looked quite right..

These were all shot in RAW and edited in lightroom... learning how to edit and relearning how to shoot as digital is a lot more different than I thought. However, the learning comes faster as I can review my results almost instantly... your critique is greatly appreciated... I know the pictures are sort of boring.. :ugh: haven't had the time to go out and shoot more interesting things...

I ended up going with the 17-70 F4 and the 50mm 1.4.. My next purchase will probably be a 70-200 2.4 by sigma and then primes within the 10-70 range

Oooops...

Primary purpose would be shooting raw on a K5... Trying to figure out if the amount of frames I'll be able to shoot before the buffer fills up will be significant...

Hello everyone,

Just trying to figure out what memory to get for my new camera! Does the 200x memory give a tangible speed increase over 166x? Or is the buffer going to fill up before it ever becomes a factor?

Since the 166x memory is about half the price per GB.. I'm trying to figure out if the extra speed is worth the money...

Hello Guys,

So... I decided to take the plunge and buy myself a new camera. I've been shooting strictly P&S cams after giving up medium format/35mm due to cost/time. I offloaded all of my equipment(previous Nikon user) a long time ago, so brand wasn't really a factor. In the end, I chose the K-5 because I like Pentax' lens lineup(lots of primes), low light performance, and the fact that you can actually get one today....

I have a few questions... Given that I'm moving into the system... I'm wondering if the kit lens is actually worth getting? The few images I've seen on flickr seemed ok.. I'll replace it in a few months, but for now, if I can get the kit + a 50-120 I'd be very happy. Once I start getting primes into the mix, I'll probably get rid of it.

Should I take a different approach as far as choosing my initial lenses goes? I thought about maybe getting a 35mm and 70mm or something along those lines(w/o the kit)... but then I think I'll be missing some range.(although your legs are the best zoom there is... :p)
