God I'm stupid. For some reason I read "flash", as in external flash for the camera. Duh... :)
Of course I own a flashlight!

Will have to try this technique too, if I have enough time!
Damn Aurora Borealis, they come and go pretty fast! I will post one of my pictures here later today so you get some idea what my pictures looked like.

This was great, thank you!
Found infinity on my lens later last night too!

Gotta remember this for next time, if they come out again this winter...

KansasPen: Thanks, but can you explain more about focus on infinity?

RollsUp: Thanks for your answer, same thing here, focus on infinity?
Flashlight is out of the question since I don't own one :)

Hi all!

We got some amazing Northern Lights up here above the Arctic Circle this weekend and I tried to use my K-x to get some good pics.
Having tried before with Auto Focus, I tried now with Manual Focus.
One problem with this though, it was too dark to see where the focus was. Ended up with blurry pictures due to this.

Anyone has a solution to this? Live view is not an answer since it's too slow. Or would that work?
Auto focus won't work due to the dark, camera cannot find anything to focus on.

Used a tripod and all settings were perfect but blurry...

Quick-shots setting, K-x?

Ok so P-mode. I haven't tried that mode yet so we'll see. Heard somewhere that it is not a favorite mode to use, but now I have heard the opposite from many, so I'll have to try it and see what's up.
Thanks!

Quick-shots setting, K-x?

Hello again,

I've been wondering, what do you guys use for quick-shots with the K-x?
I mean, if you're walking along the street or whatever, and all of a sudden an eagle comes and sits on a branch, and you only have a split-second to react and take a picture, what setting would you use?

I know there's always the Auto-pict mode, but any other ideas?

I know I'll need to know this since lots of times I only have a few seconds on me to capture a good shot, at least of moving targets, such as birds, animals, kids, whatever.

Ideas, tips?

You are absolutely right. The camera is awesome, and the ISO capabilities is just astonishing. It is me, being new to the DSLR world and expected no noise whatsoever, but you're right, in those conditions, one has to expect noise.

Thanks.

K-x refuses to capture

Hey, thanks all!

It sounds probable, since it does it in very low light and I guess, not good enough settings.
So it's all normal then, thank you guys!

K-x refuses to capture

Hello again,

I'm still learning the K-x since I've only had it for almost one week.
I've noticed that sometimes it will focus, but without the beep and then it wont capture anything. The information line on the bottom of the viewfinder, it's blinking like crazy.
What does this mean? I have read the manual but couldn't find anything about this particular problem, unless I just missed it.

Anyone got an idea?

To the lower left of the horse, it's a dark spot, you can see some noise.
But I think it's my expectations, they are a bit high.
The K-x is really incredible when it comes to low light, high ISO photos. For me it's a big step from regular P&S cameras to this, and so far I'm loving it!

Very funny! But thank you!

Took another different pic tonight, but I find it somewhat noisy but is it just me?
ISO 2200, F4, 1/45" exposure, no flash

Anything I can do to get it less grainy? Except for using a tripod and higher shutter speed and lower ISO? Maybe not...

Merry Christmas!

I went out on Christmas Eve while I still had some daylight.
Went over a ditch in waist-high snow but I did catch some interesting shots with my new K-x.

I could a bit of sun straight through these twigs and trees and made something out of it...

ISO 400, F5.6, 1/180"
I've got the focus on the sun and not the twigs, which turned out really good. Not sure it can be seen in this small picture.

Found an old dresser in the snow. Thought it was a bit odd but I had to capture it cause the oddity!

ISO 800, F11, 1/60"
It looks pretty cool with the low sun in the back, behind the trees somewhere. All we see of the sun up here...

Yes, I just have to keep trying and taking pictures.. I think the manual is pretty basic, just explains what everything is and a little about what things do/work.. But I'm getting there!

See if I get a chance to get out today in the daylight, the few minutes we have...

Thanks.

I'm starting to accepting the high ISO advantage of the K-x! And loving it!
I have also adjusted the settings for ISO, but thank you boriscleto!

I have never tried the P mode, on any camera. I have always tried with full manual except for MF. So at least I have some idea what I'm doing, but I will give the P mode a chance!

The over exposing you're talking about, here is my weak spot. For the most part, I have the +/- thingy at 0. I'm not completely sure it should always be at 0, sometimes I make it a bit darker to catch dramatic effects in the sky for example. So I believe I'm on the right path... :D

I'm always trying to push the shutter speed as high as I can so ISO can be lower, but some of the pictures got blurrier because of this, so I need to start using higher ISO.
Yeah, I changed to AF-C, isn't that good? And 11 points..
Going to try more tomorrow when the light is back and try spot focusing instead.

Thank you for your help!

Yes it was all handheld, but since I'm a bit allergic to high ISO (from all the years with P&S cameras), I try and go as low as possible.

SR is always on for me and I think I'm using it right. But I'm learning more and more about the camera so, it's getting better!

I went out today in the daylight, short as it may be, and noticed that the pictures turn out a lot better when I got some decent light!

Exp: 1/30"
ISO: 400
Aperture: F8
Focus: AF-C
No flash.

Pretty sharp in my opinion. Anything else I could work on?

That makes sense that it's focusing on the floor rather than the dog. Have to try the center focus...
I just rezised the picture in paint, hence no information I'm guessing. Also, haven't installed any Pentax software yet...

Lets see, gonna try and post a pic here...

It is just not as sharp as I would want it to be. The light is not the best, and now I cannot remember exactly what settings I used.
Anywho, any tips?
