The Thread that will never die! Over a year and a half now! Weighing on the Sigma/Tamron TC matter, in general my subjective view is that the Tamron gives superior results on my K20 when used with the DA* 200 or 300 in comparison with the Sigma TC and EX 100-300. I realize that the prime v. zoom comparison is somewhat unfair but I have ceased using the Sigma combo because of the difference

BTW Jonathon, don't you mean a 'step-down' ring for the S 180? The lens is 72mm filter size and the PTX max ring is 67mm.............just wondering.........

Good shots! Glad to hear about the step-up ring for the 180, as I plan to get one of those soon. What flash/camera settings did you use for the pix?

One world, maybe but the Adorama price included shipping, and overall though I did not calculate the difference in actual terms I am content that I didn't overpay by any too much........

The EUR/$ exrate makes the unit cheaper for you guys than the $449 Adorama price I paid. Note that the large ring in pic 2 (right side) is dedicated to the DFA macros only and locks on in place of the hood - of somehwt dubious use for very close work, especially with the 50, IMO......all the rings are metal BTW............

....and upon first look, I will say PTX has built a serious tool. It seems very well made and packaged. It is not weather-proof but are any? The K20 is pictured on the manual cover. I think it is heavier than any others available.........there are some worrisome problem points listed in the lens compatibility section with many lenses having 'focus mechanism is unstable' problems (whatever that means). Won't get to try it out for a day or so.............here's a couple of pix.............

The Promaster 1.7 will engage the SDM on the Da*s but will not complete the focus. At least that has been my experience on my K20. !t works fine on non-SDM AF and IQ is excellent.

........is my thought on your query. I have both the DA*300 and the DA55-300. The latter is light, comparatively inexpensive, flexible in use and quite a good lens overall. The * 300 is heavier, more than twice the 55-300 price, half as flexible in use and at least twice as good in IQ in my opinion. Having said that, the 55-300 spends more time on my K20 than the DA*.............good luck! :)

I do not think those Sigma lenses are actually 'HSM' in the PTX mount - if this is important to you, you should check...............

I, too, have the Sigma 105 and find it very good in IQ. Like Mr. A, the hood is a minor irritation as is the AF - Manual method. It also works well with Tamron 1.4 TC getting out to the 150 range and the Promaster 1.7, for about 180mm.......

Buddha, the only 'short' macros I have are the DFA 50 and the DA 35; both are superlative in every way. I think the 50 may be a little sharper, but others may see things differently. Both are similarlly priced, within 30-50 bucks...I don't think you could go wrong with either. Now if only PTX would actually start shipping that ring flash.........grrrrr!

So I decided to get a Macro flash and after much thought ordered the Sigma from B&H, which will arrive tomorrow.
Then I began to have second thoughts and have concluded that the Pentax is the better product for me even at a quite higher price. This is based partly on design and partly on expected performance. So the Sigma will go back.
I just spoke to the PTX folks at Golden (call ctr in NC) but they were unable to give me a release/ship date. just.............soon. :hmm:

I have not tried the tape trick or any other experimenting. My opinion is that the Promasert IQ is very good ( I think others have also said this) and equals the Tamron and is slightly better than the Kenko 1.5..........

A cautionary note on the Promaster 1.7 TC: while it is quite good optically in my experience it will not focus on SDM lenses. On my DA* 200 and 300 it will activate SDM but not complete the focus.........I have not heard of any who have had success..............

Unless the seller noted the problem in the listing I would certainly recommend that you contact them. As others have noted, either fungus or separation may continue and must be fixed and that may be expensive........good luck! :(
