Pentax Q Review by PentaxForums.com (w/ micro 4/3 comparison)

The main problem is target audience, the developers and designer of Pentax Q knew exactly what they were doing. They wanted to create a P&S replacement, and they did that. Why many buyers are disappointed and dismayed, cause keeping some of the features like Olympus and Sony Mirrorless, they are doing just fine, why pentax thought about a tiny weeny sensor design :)

Increasing the sensor size doesnt mean increasing the size of the mirrorless to a small SLR, I dont think sony Nex look anything like Pentax k-X in size... or the olympus :), they wanted to create something unique, they created alright, but forgot the people who wanted to keep a mirrorless inspite of them having a DSLR... or the people who wants to jump to mirrorless from SLR..

You wish to pursue this ;) , I dont wish to, many people are there. I work with 2 systems, canon 60D and pentax k-7. I am loyal to canon because its much faster focusing , and loyal to pentax for its colors ...

Please google fisheye lens , you will be aware of the different lenses out there.

Simply to contradict 28mm FOV , please use tokina 11-16mm f2.8 lens, its surprisingly good lens with less distortion ;) , effective 16- 24mm in FF. Nevermind, if you are happy with 28mm, so be it :)

No drama here... its called fall-off of expectation.. If you expect something big and you are provided with peanuts.. people crib about it... Its human nature.. and on top of it, they use a astronomical price for such small offerings..

Why I personally disliked , crop factor.. bokeh gone, so useless for me. And like me , many will hate Q for that... try to understand a simple thing, its not cribbing, its like you wanted the next big thing like K-5 and you are provided with P&S sensor.. Already said, good for landscape where you want everything in focus, but here also Q is gone, it will need 1mm lens to get effective 7 to 8 mm FOV. Which part is not understandable here???

This is not something you need to use to understand stuff...or people trying to play dumb here ;)

According to the questions posed by the moderators, I would like to answer some.

First thing first, this camera was compared to K-7 considered to be a noisy camera, why not K-x, K-r , or even K-5 , Could have even compared to 550D or D7000 , so many good cameras are there, and the reviewer thought about comparing the camera with slightly backdated sensor.

Answers in my humble opinion

1) Does that new backlit sensor stand a chance against the larger sensor of the E-PL3
Ans: Definitely no, E-PL3 have more details anyday at normal conditions, even a P&S works good provided you give it enough light ;) , what is the meaning of shooting under direct sun ???

2) How does the image quality from the Q compare to that of the APS-C sized Pentax K-7
Ans: I guess its worth joking, everybody knows, no point arguing :)

3) Who is the Q for?
Ans: Kids , Babies, I seem a bit biased here, but a male holding a so called professional camera in hand with interchangeable lens as a size of P&S , sounds interesting. No I wont even add Womens here, they are pretty good photographers to be holding a Pentax Q, but they can be interested.

4) What did Pentax get right in the Q, and what was a miss?
Ans: Ohh , they got into competition right, Wide angle ??? , 11mm , 16mm, 8mm . What pentax Q will manufacture 1mm lens specification with equal FOV of 8mm . :D , though people will be thrilled cause they will have a huge DOF, everything will be in Focus .

Arindom

I somewhat feel this review is pretty much biased towards Pentax Q , this observation was made since

1) No proper emphasis on image making, some shots are not worth comparing, all brightly lit subject, no proper low light samples
2) Hugely cropped sensors, so definitely OOF rendition goes out of window, no special emphasis.. this is definitely no no camera for people who love bokeh, and who doesn't love bokeh ;)
3) Very small form factor, may be better in a queen's hand, but a toy in King's hand ;) , and they rated form factor better than E-PL . E-PL have a slight feel of traditional SLR , this feels like a P&S completely.
4) Pentax seems to disappointed a few forever loyalist :( , had expectations, but it also thrown out of the window. Smaller punitive sensor (backlit or whatever), not impressed by High ISO noise at all.
5) Lenses will crop up in due course of time, so no point worrying about this :) , rather I think the review mentioned that Pentax JPEG are smaller in size, means more compression, more loss of details, what makes me feel, this is a ____less camera .
6) Saw much more punchier , contrasty images from E-PL , what happened with pentax Q .

Had expected reviews like dpreview, with proper studio settings, at same conditions. This review is in shambles, I couldn't like it at all. Completely biased.

I absolutely get your point, but the catch in my case is that am residing in India, where pentax stuffs are non existent. So when I have opportunity to visit Barcelona perhaps I can fetch a lens or two from there :)

Pentax Mount Lenses in Barcelona

Hi All,
I am from India and Pentax is non existent in India for now. My parents are attending a marriage in barcelona from 15th onwards, so I thought about acquiring some lenses from there. What specifically I am looking for Tamron 17-55 f2.8 non VC , and Tamron 90mm f2.8 Macro lens.

I would like to know where it is available in Barcelona , and which shops retails them. Since ther visit will be max 10 days so they do have a time crunch, and at the same time I dont want to waste my chances of acquiring these lenses. Grey items are preferable since eitherway I wont have warranty overseas in India, but again if only billed lenses are available, I am good to go with them.

Kindly help me in this matter.:)

Regards,
Arindom

Wow pretty consise and thanks debmalya... Yes it helps a lot... I hope no one takes me otherwise. I was looking for this info since I will soon be a pentaxian again and may need this.
My last pentax K-X had a 2 specs of dusts inside the VF glass, but I never removed them since no idea how to take it apart.

Arindom

Is it helping us in any sense... Though we are very happy to the shared gyaan here :P ...

Keeping OT out, what you suggested we can use some other bodies viewfinder glass perhaps a bit of cleaning will help too. Please share something which will help him in this matter :) .
What I wanted to know, suppose the viewfinder glass needs replacement, is it possible to get it sourced from US.

Arindom

Even I am supporting your cause.. :D ... Can it be replaced here in kolkata somewhere ???
Any pentax users from Kolkata please share whether the sensor or the viewfinder glass (not the focus screen) is replaceable or not.

Sony Alpha A55 fares much better than any of Nikon D5100 ir D3100 many times. Review correctly you may come out with better alternatives. If you are ok with tru view in the viewfinder then you can always opt for A55, but again sony is like Pentax with no support for lenses in india. :( ...

P.S I used D3100, Pentax K-X and Canon 60D(currently with me), and pentax k-x owns other any day :)

I have used the K-X, Pentax is truly something to behold specially the newly designed sensors. Superb vibrant colors and one of the best feature is in body stabilization... Enjoy :)
