I finally got the chance to try to download this out last night but there's a $.99 price for it. If it works well, I'd be happy to pay for an Android version

Thanks for the input everyone. New development
This morning I decided to measure the voltage on the dead battery and possibly try to revive it with a carefully limited trickle charge. When I measured the voltage it wasn't low - it was in microvolts which puzzled me because usually there will always be some small voltage present. At first I thought that some internal protection circuit may have opened, but I used my probes to scratch the surface of the battery contacts and then got a reading close to 6V! I decided to clean the contacts with IPA (no, not indian pale ale:)), and that did the trick. The charger accepted the battery and it's charging as I write.
There must have been some film that developed on the contacts while it was in the camera and that film was enough to break the contact connection (and then keep me from getting a reading). No moisture involved as I haven't had the camera or batteries in an moist location so not sure. Will keep this one in mind though so next time I will check the contacts first.
Anyway, no need for a replacement if the battery takes a charge and works in the camera again - will clean those contacts too, but will be sure to always keep a spare handy.

Nice shots. The grey skies probably helped more than hindered. Nice even light to bring out the markings on the little beastie. Photographing in trees on a sunny day is always a challenge.

To all Pentax apologists, just face it, Pentax AF has never been and still isn't up to par.
That doesn't mean the AF is useless, or that Pentax is useless, it means that the AF functions is behind the competitions AF. That´s it.

It says: "What's frustrating is that there's little in the way of customizability in the menu system. Options like telling the camera to ignore closer subjects that suddenly pop into the frame aren't there. This is frustrating, as by the end of the derby, I could predictably tell where the camera would lose autofocus as I panned across a closer jump while following a rider and horse."
That can be customised by "Hold AF Status", which can be "Off", "Low", "Medium", or "High". It is one of several features in "Phase Detection AF", the very first item in the Menu.
I suspect the default settings were being used, but as you say we can't be sure.

During WWII a new navigator in the B25* cockpit was scrupulous. "Turn two degrees south." Turn two degrees north." " turn one degree south." The pilot got exasperated. "I cannot make an adjustment of one or two degrees. The best I can do with these instruments is about five degrees or more." "OK" says the navigator, "turn six degrees north then turn seven degrees south."
* Sorry about inverting the numbers in the original post.

in Australia, we need another China/India driven mining boom along with some other "loss of confidence in USA thing"..... then the lenses might be more reasonably priced for us.

Dust Alert has been useful in Pentax for years. I can't see the logic in removing the feature.

Adam's suggestion to take a picture at f22 is probably adequate but the dust alert images was just neat! Hope the put it back.

This sounds like something that could be easily rectified in firmware, if Ricoh's prepared to do so. I too like the Dust Alert feature... it's very helpful.

If you want an external battery back for the faster cycle time, it'll have to be a high voltage power supply, not a 4xAA 6 volt DIY solder and gaffa tape job that connects to the battery compartment contacts.
I also recommend the JJC power pack, from personal experience.

--Anders.
