Slow Pentax K-7 buffer and write times

This was so exciting, I jumped out of bed after a few hours sleep - it's Christmas morning and I know I heard something on the rooftop! I'll probably stay away from the burst modes for the most part but thank God it's really there when you need it.

My digital backlog is already a mountain. The time factor with digital (for me considering post processing, organization etc.) is almost the same as film. Thankfully once you have your equipment, the financial outlay is much less, just keep buying more hard drives and backup drives. Where's my $100 indestructible Petabyte hard drive?

Thanks Ash. The lens correction was indeed the culprit. I found an earlier thread just before I got your reply. It's not one of the features which shows up on the first level menu with a check beside it, so I hadn't even thought to look at its status.

I would never recommend turning it on unless perhaps you are doing architectural shots on a tripod and can't do any post processing correction. It probably doesn't do anything better that what I regularly do for barrel distortion in PS. Months beating my head against the wall and I'd searched the forum before and hadn't come across the solution...:o

The front wheel controls the shutter speed, the back wheel controls the aperture. If the wheels aren't responding press the shutter release down half way and try again. Hope this solves it.

I have very slow write times to a class 6 Sandisk 8GB card. I upgraded from a class 4 PNY 4GB card and the write time didn't improve. In situations where I need fast response, this is extremely frustrating and I'm missing many shots waiting on the camera. Have firmware 1.10.

Despite my efforts in adjusting settings which might affect write time, nothing seems to speed up the process. I changed the file size from 14 to 10MB - no difference. The following are real time tests I did this evening. When testing the camera I switched to manual focus - hence no focus hunt time. These are the results.

14 MB jpeg. Aperture priority. Manual focus - iso 3200. Shutter speed averaging around 200th of a second.

Hi drive mode - initial burst of 4 frames in perhaps two seconds. Then each additional shot came every 2.5 to 3 seconds. In sixty seconds I was able to shoot 22 frames in 60 seconds so my shot to shot time average came down to 2.7 seconds between images.

Lo drive mode - disabled shake reduction, disabled high ISO noise reduction, disabled copyright and author information. Same results - I made these changes one by one and tested the shot to shot time. The only one that seemed to marginally speed up the camera was disabling the high ISO noise reduction, it may have shaved half a second off the write time after the initial burst of 4 frames. 23 frames in 60 seconds. Shot to shot time average 2.6 seconds between images. 1st four images in rapid succession then the wait.

Single shot mode - same items disabled as above. Able to get off 26 frames in 60 seconds pushing the shutter release constantly and as fast as I could. Shot to shot time average 2.3 seconds between images. 1st four images in rapid succession then the wait.

Suggestions? Is my camera defective? I suppose I should drag the K10 out of the closet and try these tests. I never seemed frustrated with its shot to shot performance and didn't feel like I was always missing key photos. Thanks for any help!
