Thanks guys. Culprit was dirty contacts. Took an isopropyl alcohol swab to the contacts and pins, let it air out and gave it another try. All is well. Thanks.

Yep. Grip turned on. Tried a couple other lenses. Gave the contacts (camera and grip) a wipe/rub with a lens cloth. Contacts appear clean and normal.

Had my K3 with grip and Tamron 70-200 out yesterday and the grip af button would not engage autofocus... AF button on body worked fine, just not the af button on the grip... Any ideas?

Thanks - Roger

Abstract The Dam Shot!

I took this photo in early November 2011. I had been at this spot many times looking for something special - better composition, better light, perhaps birds, something to make the shot special. I was sitting in my office late afternoon in early November and noticed some really special light coming in from the sunset. So I raced up to the dam to work with the light and see if I could come up with something. The moon, one little cloud and traffic streaming by add a nice touch.

This is the Glick Rd bridge over O'Shaughnessy Dam on the Scioto River. Not a large dam by any means. But special since it's in my hometown.

Pentax K5, DA*16-50 at 26mm f4 for 13 seconds on a Benro tripod. Post processing mostly focused on lifting the shadows under the bridge and adjusting the sky to the sunset colors I saw that evening.

Tamron 28-75mm for Portraits

Hey paperbag!

I'm a rare (extremely rare) poster here. But I'm just killing time this afternoon and may be able to offer a useful opinion.

I have too many lenses. Here are my usual set ups: Two lens kit = 16-50 & 50-135. One lens kit = Tammy 28-75. Prime kit = 21, 40 and 70.

The Tammy takes excellent portraits. My usual formula is 75mm, 4.5 and a hotshoe flash tilted to 45 with an omnibounce. Compared to the 16-50 it's a lot easier to carry (smaller diameter and smaller hood). My problem with it is that isn't wide enough. So sometimes I'll carry the 21 with it (or a 10-17 FE). Yes, LBA has struck me hard... :)

Bokeh comparison between the Tammy and DA70 Limited - Hmmm... It's really subjective. There's a little something special about the 70's bokeh. But the Tammy is excellent, really. I would be hard pressed to find an example of ugly/angry bokeh with the Tammy. It really is an exceptional performer for the price.

Peace - Roger Hayslip

ND Filter for outdoor group shot

I think you said in another thread you'd be shooting from a lift. Were you planning on getting any sky in the shot? Or do you think you'd be up high enough that you'd be looking down on them and just get the crowd and surrounding ground?

Don't know what the topography is at your shooting location. But if you can get them on the shady side of the building and have them entirely in the shade, that would be ideal. Less squinting for them and even lighting for you.

If you're shooting from the roof, a lift, or hanging out a window, do make sure to strap yourself to something (or have a large friend hold onto your belt...).

If you think your shooting time and location is going to involve lots of shadows, I'd suggest thinking about changing the time (if you can).

Good luck!

Building Shoot - Advice sought

My church is looking for an updated picture of our building to use on their website and printed materials.

The request is for an updated picture(s) that demphasizes the old sanctuary (right side of pic below) and places more emphasis on the other parts of the building and especially emphasizes the main entrance (dark hole in the middle left).

This is an example pic of the church structure from the south. Nothing special.

Generally I shoot people - sports, kids in actions, portraits, etc. I've been walking around this side of the structure at different times of the day trying different focal lengths. But nothing has struck me as being outstanding yet... And I've no idea how to light up the dark hole of an entrance. I haven't tried stitching pics together yet. I've mostly been using a 16-50 for this task.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Tamron 17-50 vs DA*16-50 Throwdown!

Well I am familiar with your OSU logo. I'm an alumnus of another OSU. I've had people confuse my Block O with your logo or even Oregon State's.

But the little greek sign was plenty sharp enough to read. And I was serious about a couple of those shingles. Looking at the far right roof of the shot that contained the greek life sign. It looked like four or five shingles were loose.

But man what a sharp lens. Enjoy it!

Wow. That's pretty sharp.

Bonus points try: I'd say that's the Oklohama State University Student Union. Didn't know they were celebrating 100 years of Greek life... Looks like that roof might have a couple loose shingles too... :D:D

LBA - Would you make the same choice?

I'd like to wait for the 60-250 f4. It would be a nice compliment to the Tammy 28-75. But who knows how much longer it'll be.... Late summer? Sometime this fall? 2009? A lens on the camera is worth two on the roadmap I guess.

The 50-135 might be good for taking pics in the ice rink. But it will probably be too short for outdoor kid sports shots. Getting the 50-135 for around $650 (with rebate ordered on same receipt as K20D) is hard to pass up. Anyway, I'll probably waver on this till it's time to order. There's always good short glass to consider (Tammy 17-50 2.8 and Pentax DA* 16-50 2.8). Or maybe the 21, 70 or 77....

But no 5-555 f1 I'm afraid. Couldn't find that one anywhere. It must be out of stock again...:lol::lol:

LBA - Would you make the same choice?

Hey there,

My birthday is coming up and it's time to pick out a couple presents for myself :D I've been using a K100d for a bit over a year now and have decided to get a K20D. I'm really excited about the dual wheels, TAv mode, etc, etc.

Anyway, lucky me, I still have US$600 or so in funds left. So I'm thinking I'll go for a DA* 50-135. I mainly shoot my kids so, even though I really like primes, zooms are much more flexible for me. I have a decent tripod, a 540 flash and a couple of 8GB Extreme III SD cards.

So, with my current lens lineup below(and my standard moving subjects), would you get a DA* 50-135 too? Or would you go for something else??

Manual primes
Tokina 28 2.8 (rarley use it)
Pentax M 50 1.7 (love it, but wish it were an A)
Soligor 135 2.5 (love it, but don't use it enough)

Modern prime
Pentax DA40 2.8 Ltd (On my camera for daily travel in my briefcase)

Zooms
Pentax 18-55 old kit lens (Rarely use it as I don't shoot wide very often)
Tamron 28-75 2.8 (Love this lens. My main lens when I know I'll be shooting something)
Tamron 70-300 newer macro version (Use this for longer shots. Wish it didn't PF so much, had a zoom lock and non rotating focus).

What do you think? I would like a nice longer lens. Maybe I should be patient and wait for the Tamron 70-200 or the Pentax DA*60-250.

Thanks - Roger Hayslip

Flash Exposure Compensation Question

Here's a couple questions I couldn't find answers to regarding flash exposure compensation.

I have a K100D and usually leave the Flash Exp. Comp. set to -0.3 in the camera menu.

1) When I use my 540 flash does the Flash Exp. Comp. setting on the camera (-0.3) get transferred to the flash?

2) If I also set the 540 flash exposure compensation down (-0.5), which setting gets used? The setting from the camera, flash or both added together?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts on the matter...
