PENTAX Film Camera Project shifts to the next stage in the development of a new film camera|RICOH IMAGING

Youtu.be

Transcription of TKO's statement:

"Hello, everyone! It’s TKO again.

The Film Camera Project, which we launched at the end of 2022, has received tremendous support of many people, not only film camera enthusiasts both in Japan and overseas, but also from industry partners and students who assisted our research. Their support made us realize the growing popularity of film cameras and analog photography while serving as great encouragement to us.

We wondered over and again whether we should proceed with this project and whether it would be possible for us to develop the product we intended to. It was your support and advice that helped us regain our confidence and encouraged us to move on. We are very thankful for this.

We visited a number of countries and received many opinions and suggestions.

Finally, we were able to visualize the overall image of our new film camera.

Today I’ll tell you more about the camera.

As I explained in previous video presentations the basic concept of this product is a camera that allows younger photographers to fully enjoy taking photos as they enter the world of film photography.

So, what kind of camera should it be? We repeatedly asked ourselves this question. Here is how we’re thinking about it now. I’m going to share some new product information with you today.

First of all, this camera is basically designed for vertical-format photos. That is, it provides a vertical-format image when you look into the viewfinder and the basic format of image framing is also vertical.

Why did we decide on vertical-format framing?

In today’s society, which is saturated with digital gadgets, smartphones are such an important part of people’s daily lives.

When we communicate with each other using smartphones and tablet computers, we basically hold the device in a vertical position. The result is that we more often capture vertical-format photos.

When we exchange images via social media, vertical-format photos come in handy.

One of the pleasures younger photographers have with film photography is in exchanging photos developed from the film as digital data.

Based on these factors, we decided that the vertical format would be better accepted by younger photographers.

There was another reason why we felt that the vertical format is a better choice.

Compared with the peak of film photography, the price of film is much higher today. This is a very difficult hurdle to overcome in enjoying analog photography. Due to the limited number of photos that can be captured on a single roll of film, the high running costs, including that of development, are also a big issue.

By designing a vertical-format camera, we figured that we could double the number of photos captured on each roll of film. This led us to adopt a half-size format. Because this format takes up about half the size of the conventional image area, it doubles the number of photos that can be captured.

We believe that this is a very effective solution to reduce the costs involved, including that of film purchases. It means that you can capture 48 photos on a roll of 24-exposure film or 72 photos on 36-exposure film.

Our hope is that it would make analog photography more enjoyable and more accessible to younger photographers, keeping it within their budget.

PENTAX has been engaged in the development of film cameras for many decades. But this is the first time that we produce a PENTAX-branded half-format camera. When we came up with the idea of a half-format camera we came to realize that there was a camera format we hadn’t yet used.

It was a bit of surprise for us.

The vertical format brings yet another benefit. You can lay out two vertical-format photos side by side on the space of a single 35mm-format image. This provides a tremendous advantage. By placing two photos together in a single image you can create a work of art that can better tell a concept or story.

I expect that this will stimulate the creativity of younger photographers and inspire them to capture beautiful photos and produce fine works of art.

We expect that many photographers will use a film camera for the first time. At first, they may capture totally black photos due to underexposure or white-washed photos due to overexposure.

To prevent such troubles, we incorporated a few electronic-control mechanisms in the new camera.

One of them is the acclaimed electronic shutter unit. We plan to customize it for use in a film camera. It will provide the camera with a number of electronic-control features, including automatic control of aperture and shutter speed.

In other words, even a first-time user will be able to use the camera effortlessly and without trouble.

So, can the camera automatically take a photo with a single push of the shutter-release button? Yes, it can. I hope that we can make it happen. That’s not all, however; the camera will also allow the photographer to manually change some settings.

One idea is to allow the photographer to choose the desired shooting mode via dial control. I hope you’ll look forward to it!

For focusing operation, we are planning to incorporate a manually set zone-focus system. It will allow the user to set the desired focus range based on the distance to the subject by turning the focus ring positioned on the lens barrel.

We would also like to incorporate a mechanism that tells you the selected focus zone at a glance when you look into the viewfinder.

These features will provide the pleasure of manual control while also benefiting from the simplicity of automatic operation.

For film winding operations we plan to recreate an old-fashioned winding mechanism used in past film-format SLR cameras because we would like you to rediscover and enjoy the touch of this old mechanism. It works and feels exactly the way it was!

If you wind the film manually, you’d also like to rewind it manually, right? The good news is that we plan to recreate a vintage film rewinding mechanism as well. When you finish shooting a roll of film, pull out the rewinding crank and rotate it to rewind the film.

For film winding and rewinding operations it would have been much easier to use a motorized mechanism. However, we decided to go for the time and effort needed with a mechanical unit because we wanted you to enjoy the action and sound of winding/rewinding operations.

Next is the lens, the core element of a camera. When we decided to adapt the half-size format, we drew great inspiration from two of our past models.

One was the angle of view provided by the RICOH Auto Half, which was a popular half-size camera from decades ago.

Another was the optical design of the lens. For this, we referred to the optical design of PENTAX Espio mini, which was acclaimed as a masterpiece by many fans in the past.

Please look forward to this new lens, too!

That’s all I can tell you now.

After listening to my presentation some of you may be wondering why we decided to develop this kind of camera.

Film photography has a long history during which manual mechanical cameras became handier and simpler to operate and finally evolved into fully automatic, electronically controlled models.

When we talked to many people after we launched this film camera project, which was aimed at creating a new camera for young, photography-loving people, we began to realize that it didn’t have to be one of two choices: either fully manual or fully automatic.

For operations demanding convenience, we can incorporate electronically controlled mechanisms. For operations recreating the classic pleasure of mechanical action, we can use manual mechanisms.

We assessed each feature and every function based on these factors and carefully chose the most appropriate mechanism for each of them so that we could create a new camera that would meet all the expectations of young photographers.

This is not a camera that can be rated or classified simply in terms of features and functions.

In this presentation, I have explained to you what the overall product concept of our new film camera is. I’ve also noted that we have now reached the next stage of product development.

I hope that we can deliver a camera that allows first-time film camera users to fully and effortlessly enjoy film photography and also brings back former film camera lovers after years of absence.

To tell you the truth, we finished assembling a prototype and I actually took some photos with it. It was so much fun! It was really, really fun to use this camera. I was so overjoyed with this camera that I kept shooting a photo one after another. I’m not sure if I’m actually allowed to talk about this at this point. But it was so much fun that I cannot help it. What’s more, every photo came out very nicely.

Thanks to your tremendous support, our new film camera is finally taking shape.

Developed as a part of the Film Camera Project we strongly believe that this is one of the most important models that we will be introducing to the camera market.

Analog photography will never disappear. It will never, ever become extinct.

For this project, I visited various countries and met many people involved in the analog photography business. All of them were very enthusiastic and supportive. They showed overwhelming interest in this camera.

I believe that young photographers will keep enjoying analog photography for generations to come. I hope that we can help them achieve their goals and dreams.

I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to those of you who have supported this project: all film camera enthusiasts, the industry partners and students who assisted our research, retired PENTAX engineers who volunteered their services, and the members of our development team who have been working so hard to overcome difficulties day after day.

We are just a step away from our ultimate goal. We have come this far in making an actual product.

I appreciate your continuing support and encouragement all the way to the end of this project. I also wish that other camera manufactures would follow suit and enter the analog camera market. I will be very happy if this happens. Please consider my proposal!

But if and when it happens, please go easy on us.

It's time for film.
PENTAX, PENTAX, PENTAX
Film photography is coming back!
That’s all from TKO.

Same here. My favourite 50 (ish). Although I liked the F 50/1.7 a lot due to its size, the DA* 55 is fantastic. I don't hesitate using it wide-open and I like the overall performance very much.

About two years ago (November 27, 2021) Pentax did an event where they asked users what kind of full frame camera they wanted. There were four options.

- An all-manual camera
- A version of the existing K-1 body with a lower resolution sensor (it would be faster as a result of the lower resolution)
- A mild update, that just transferred the new tech of the K-3 III to a full frame camera
- A full update of the K-1, with a new prism and high resolution sensor, which would take longer to make

I think it seems clear now that they decided on the last option with hindsight. A while ago, asahiman posted on the other forum that the new camera was taking time to develop because it requires greater “precision”. One logical understanding of this is that Pentax doesn’t think the K-3 III AF tech is good enough for a high resolution sensor (e.g. 61 MP).

So this leads me to believe that a K-1 that just adopts K-3 III technology is not on the cards. It will be significantly improved.

I think it’s worth remembering that the K-3 III itself took a long time to arrive. But when it did, it was essentially all new. Pentax claimed only the mount, hotshoe and battery were shared with its predecessor. I expect a similar effort to be put into the K-1 III.

Rare 100mm f/3.5 Takumar is a dud. :-(

Thanks to several people on this forum and facebook I finally got the courage to repair the 100mm f/3.5 Takumar. It appears that the whole optical block (including diaphragm) can easily be separated from the focusing helicoid just by unscrewing one retaining ring from the back side of the lens (warning: it's not the ring visible in the photo!). Also nice to see how the lens was shimmed for infinity (with several thin brass slotted rings).

The problem? I noticed that the last element (camera side) came out of the lens tube with the flatter side pointing to the rear, and that's not what the optical diagram shows. This problem is impossible to see without removing the element, because it's lying very deep. With the optical block out of the helicoid things became much easier. So finally I flipped that element (most curved side pointing to the M42 mount side) and screwed everything back together. Lo and behold - it's OK again!

Now let's wait for better weather because the last shots could be so much better with nicer light. The last two photos were taken with the 100mm Takumar.

Hello everyone, I'm a photographer based in Taiwan.
I'm thrilled to share with you the events that took place here over the past two days.
Please bear with me as my English proficiency may not be sufficient for precise descriptions.
I appreciate your understanding on this matter.

Firstly, let's talk about the activities on the first day.
The primary focus of the first day was a gathering of PENTAX fans in Taiwan.
The nature of the event leaned more towards an internal assembly of core members.
The organizer was the local agent in Taiwan, which has a long-standing collaborative history with PENTAX in Japan.
Since the era of ASAHI Optical, they have been actively involved in managing the sales and representation.

The main content of the first day's event revolved around sharing information about the PENTAX film project.
There were interactive Q&A sessions with responses from Mr. TKO and Mr. Aki from PENTAX,
including insights shared by the CEO of the Taiwan agency.

Unfortunately, I'm currently unable to share details beyond a certain scope on the internet. I hope you understand.

Regarding the user-submitted questions,
Taiwanese users raised several inquiries, including the following:

1. About K-1 III
2. About progress update on film cameras
3. About sales-related questions about film cameras
4. About DFA* wide-angle fast lenses / 2nd generation DA 50-135
5. About the Q series system
6. About the 645 system
7. About possibility of a mirrorless system
8. In the film project, questions about developing and film-related matters

Regarding the eight questions mentioned above, please understand that I cannot reveal too much information.

The responses are as follows:

1.To achieve a higher level of precision, more time than initially anticipated has been invested.
The procurement of digital camera components has become considerably more challenging than before.
However, please be assured that it is currently in progress. Kindly be patient and await further updates.

2. Progress is going smoothly.

3. Details cannot be disclosed at this time.

4. The primary goal at the moment is to increase business growth and expand into new customer segments.
Efforts toward these objectives will be made in the future.

5. In Japan, there have been users expressing interest in restarting the Q series.
However, the Q series has certain limitations in specifications, and feasibility studies on this matter will be conducted.

6. This project is currently in a later stage of the sequence and cannot be undertaken immediately.

7.The difficulty level is very high.

8. Regarding the production volume and pricing of film, we hope to increase partnerships through the film project.
The aim is to stimulate the film photography market and bring about positive changes.
The same applies to the development process.

The content of the second-day event was similar to the first day,
with the main difference being that the first session was for inviting PENTAX FANS,
while the second session was for inviting film enthusiasts. Additionally,

the second session showcased a small portion of the developmental prototype and offered hands-on experience with manual film cameras.

Regarding the details about the prototype,
I cannot disclose too much, but its size is not large. I believe its dimensions may fall somewhere between the GR and ESPIO 70.

The above provides an overview of the event content. If this article seems to lack substantial information,

I apologize, and thank you for reading.

Speculation - New Sony FF sensor in a Pentax K1 successor

Loud mouth Sony fanatics have all but ruined the marketability of this camera, also, since it's about twice the size of an A7CR with 13 less megapixels, and still around 50% larger and heavier than an A7R mkIV or mkV, and doesn't perform up to the same levels as Sony's AI based eye-detect autofocus.

In many ways I view the S1R is a mirrorless equivalent to the K-1. It has a large heavy body, an abundance of traditionally arranged controls, uncompromising image quality, beautifully made lenses at sane prices, and is packed with more features than most other cameras at the same price point. Prices for the S1R have nose-dived in the last year, especially used, but a steady cadence of firmware updates have kept improving the hybrid aspects of the camera and worked out initial bugs.

Re: AF performance - sort of like Pentax, Panasonic remained very bull-headed about their investment into the DFD (Depth-from-Defocus) autofocusing algorithm that they developed on micro-4/3s and put it into the S5 and S1 FF bodies. It wasn't until just recently with the release of the S5ii and S5iix that they rectified this and started shipping PDAF with the newest bodies. But just like the K-1 Mk3 there is no concrete information as of yet about an S1 mkii update, or if it will even be continued.

I think they just want to leave room to continue it indefinitely. I mean initial products will come out soon, but the project is more than just the initial products.

Another thing is that TKO might just think it's cool to put a zero in front of numbers. He named one of the J Limited products "J Limited 01" and produced prototypes of J-Limited 02 and 03. He was also heavily involved in the development of the K-01.

Actually, they did. The part about the smc FA 50mm f/1.4 Classic was the most interesting part of the event. There were some interesting tidbits about the development of the lens.

They explained that the original idea came from people who enjoyed the iridescent rainbow ghosting that occurred when framing the sun with old lenses like the Super-Takumar 55mm F1.8 on a K-1 with an adapter.

They knew that when the Super-Takumar was replaced by the Super-Multi-Coated Takumar, the inner frame of the lens barrel was redesigned to eliminate internal reflections.

They simulated the light reflection on the inner frame of the smc FA 50mm f/1.4 with and without a 'certain device' added between the Super-Takumar and the Super-Multi-Coated Takumar. The presence of a 'rainbow ring' was confirmed in the simulation.

They made a prototype and were able to reproduce the 'rainbow ring'.

They ran further simulations and discovered that by adjusting the shape and surface treatment of the inner frame of the lens barrel, they could control the intensity of the rainbow ring. (If the rainbow rings are too strong, they turn white.)

By the way, the smc 50mm f/1.4 Classic is called 'smc' even though the coating on its lens elements has been renewed since the smc 50mm f/1.4. That's because it has different characteristics to the HD Pentax lenses.

"Over the years, PENTAX has developed and marketed dustproof, waterproof or weather-resistant products, all of which have been well received and highly respected by many users. This product lineup will be further expanded in the future, while marketed under the PENTAX brand beginning with the PENTAX WG-90 -- just like the PENTAX digital SLR lineup, in which all models are designed to be dustproof and weather-resistant. " (Japanese press release)

"The WG series all-weather adventure cameras – known for their rugged chassis, plus waterproof and shock-resistant features – will now be offered under the PENTAX brand which is regarded industry-wide for developing dustproof, waterproof and weather-resistant products." (North-American press release)

Considering the reason given for the switch in branding, it seems Ricoh wants to be sure that the Ricoh brand isn't associated any more with cameras that are dustproof.

Because GR owners might get confused otherwise? :p

K-1 II, is it too late to get into?

Thanks all for discussions. I pulled the trigger on the K-1 II, got it used from a local gentleman.
I haven't used it much, only took some shots right after getting it with the F 28/2.8. I like the 28/2.8 on the mono, but on the FF to my surprise, I am not too keen on it, but I would imagine I would like the 43/1.9 because 28 on APSC is around that 43mm FF equivalent.

Overall though, it's actually not so bad on the size and weight. Maybe because I use mostly small prime lenses, it's not so bad and I think it's my way to go on using Pentax, is to use the camera with the small primes and the Limiteds.
Focus is not as bad as I expected as well. I can see it falls off in sports and wildlife for sure, but good enough for me as someone that only does everyday walkaround, streets, some landscape, and maybe some astro from time to time.

I think overall as a general purpose photography camera, note just strict photography, not video, it's really hard to go wrong with this camera for hobbyists/enthusiasts. In some genres it falls off such as sports/wildlife as mentioned, but it also makes up with some genres that this camera excels at such as landscape and night/astrophotography. Not to mention in harsh situations like extreme cold, rain, damp situations is what Pentax starts to shine. If you are a professional or content creator then maybe it's not for you, but just hobbyists/enthusiast photographers. You can do a lot with this camera. I am still exploring the functions and the many things in the menu system of this camera.

Will start posting pictures over at the "post your pictures" thread.

Focussing screens for the K1 DIY split image

Back in my Spotmatic etc. film days, I never really got on with split-image screens, which only really work effectively with some focal length lenses anyway. My preferred choice has always been a plain ground-glass screen, or when available, one with a microprism centre-spot. These seems to work far better with my eyes than a split-image..To me a screen is not only for critical focus, but also composition, and the split-image seems a distraction. I fitted a very good cut-down Canon plain screen to my K-S1, but the supplied screen in my KP seems absolutely fine.
