Pentax K 85 1.8 help with lens hood

Thanks for your feedback guys. I'm just learning that expressing a camera issue in English is much harder than "business english" I'm used to talk and write ;)

Ok so picture 1: In this, focus is set to infinity. What I found strange is the gap/interruption on the front lens tubus/barrel, which I have never seen on any other lens
pic 2:In this, focus is set to minimum. Here you can see that the outer barrel basically covers the lens barrel completely. So there is hardly any space left for a lens cap (which was not sent with the lens). You can also see that there simply isn't any filter thread - the lens barrel stops right after the lens markings. As Adam noticed, the lens also protudes "over" the lens barrel, so probably no lens cap will ever fit (maybe one similar to the 10-17 Fisheye) and the lens is in danger to get damaged.

From the few test shots I took, the focus seems to be fine. Focus ring also is quite smooth (not perfect, but okay) and the aperture works fine as well. But given the issues I will try to return it. The seller has a 14 days return option, so hopefully everything works fine.

So I will keep looking for this lens a little bit longer ;)

Thanks to all of you for your quick analysis and advice!!

Pentax K 85 1.8 help with lens hood

Hi all,

I just bought a K85 1.8 lens on ebay. Unfortunately, it gives me some headaches.

Somehow I have a version of the lens, which does not have a filter thread. Therefore, I'm not sure what kind of hood would fit here. I know the original hood is a clip-on - but with the lens focused on infinity, there simply seems to be no "space" to clip on. Do you guys have an idea?

Another strange thing - when focus is set to minimum focus distance, the lens cubus features an "interruption". Please take a look at the images - I don't know how to describe this any better.

When I searched for pictures of this lens, I couldn't find a single one with these features.

Thanks for your help,

Jens

Regarding Focus Peaking: Besides the issue, that it might just not be possible to implement in the K5, I could think of quite a few reasons for Pentax not to do it. First, they have limited ressources. Even if you charge money for such an upgrade it, they simply might need those ressources for the development of the new products. To say that it cannot be that difficult to implement it in the K5 is a wild assumption on your behalf. Since the hardware is definitly slower, they might have to optimize the algorithms quite a lot to make it perform fast enough. Second, adding such a feature to a working firmware is always a risk from a software development perspective. You have to test it thoroughly again as it might affect other functionality. Third, I think you contradict yourself in that you say that focus peaking in the K5 would not hinder people from buying the K3 but than you are so eager to have this feature. Others were also very excited that the K-30 has it and there have been endless threads here and elsewhere that it should be added to the K5. This clearly shows that there is a high demand for this feature which then means that it is one piece of the puzzle to convince users to buy a new product. Not the only one, but not the least one as well...

So actually I see very little motivation for Pentax to include this feature in a product that is about to get replaced.

Regarding 12 bit vs 14 bit: Please show me a real life example for K-01 vs K-5 showing any difference in lowlight or dynamic range performance, that is noticable without pixel peeping (or at all actually). If you can't find one, then stop worrying about it.

@Frank: Can you already say something about the Shutter Sound, especially compared to the K-r? From the videos I saw on the net it is definitely a lot louder than the K-5. In the dpreview boards during the Q&A the Pentax rep said it is somewhere between K-5 and K-r, but I'm not so sure whether it might actually be exactly the same as the K-r (which would be a real bummer for me).

Hi Frank, thanks for sharing all that information. I just saw that you also own a G3. From your first experiences, how would you compare K-01 and G3 not only IQ but also handling wise? Could the K-01 be a camera to replace your G3 or do you see different usage scenarios? I currently own a GF1 and a K-R and think about replacing both with the K-01. Thanks!

Ok so let me be more clear (and thanks for ignoring the rest of my post...): Obviously, technical image quality is only a part of what makes a great image - but as we are talking about the technical camera, please let us dismiss for a second the most important part, the skill of the photographer. Second, while I stated that the K5 sensor is in the camera as the reason for probably good technical IQ, metering, WB, etc. plays an important role, yes. But then again, those aspects were never part of the discussion here so far and actually I assume that Pentax won't mess them up completely (but we will see). Autofocus may too be a factor for many users, and as I do have stated, AF performance may be a deal braker for me personally (the videos so far look promising however, at least for my personal needs).

The criticism focused on functional aspects of the camera, especially the lack of a viewfinder, which, as some have stated, make it less suited for "serious photography". My point here is that from the technical point of view, I find this statement absurd given that the technical IQ (including WB, metering) will probably be very good based on our experience with the K5. For me this sometimes reads like that any serious photographer needs a viewfinder. And while I like my viewfinder very much, I call BS on that. That is just plain ignorant towards technical innovation. As I stated above, both viewfinders and LCD screens have pros/cons. And again, I have the strong feeling that many who critisize the lack of a viewfinder have never worked with a good and responsive LCD.

Finally, I'm sure that for some photographers the K-01 will not be the right tool. That is the case for every camera. And the reasons can be manifold, e.g. fast AF-C needed, more manual controls, and for some also the missing viewfinder, as this requires to change your style of taking pictures. But that doesn't mean that this is a camera "just for soccer moms or design freaks". If it is a tool that allows me to take great images, than the potential user community is much larger.

Ah one last point. It's really funny that another argument also is that Pentax is missing the point of a mirrorless camera. That really is a tech-geeky perspective. From a photographers point of view, I couldn't care less if my camera has a mirror or not, so I don't think "serious photographers" (and not tech-geeks) won't buy a camera that allows them to take great pictures if it doesn't fit the scheme mirrorless=small.

Hi, i haven't posted much on this forum, but like to share my view on the k01. First what really baffles me is how anyone here can describe a camera as not being meant for serious photographers when it houses a k5 like sensor and is expected to have similar IQ. Isn't IQ what it is all about? don't we admire Leica for exactly that? obviously you can improve a camera with additional functionality, usability, etc. but in the end IQ will determine if a camera is suited for "serious photographers".

Second, this huge outcry regarding the lack of a viewfinder. have you guys actually ever used a good lcd screen? and i don't mean the one on a k-r or k5. those are crap even compared to the panny gf1. obviously, a viewfinder has its advantageous but so does a good lcd. many EVILs dont have a viewfinder built in and sell welland while there may be optional ones to get, i doubt they sell high volumes. at least i haven't seen lots of pens or gf cameras with viewfinder in real life. and btw, with a good lcd you can take great pictures even if it not tiltable. And this has also nothing to do with serious photography - in some cases you can frame a shot much better with LCD, e.g. when your subject is not on eye-level viewfinder shots tend to be from a too high angle.

For me, personally, i really like the camera. it could replace my k-r and panny gf1 and allow me to focus on one system. i fidn the design refreshing and did so from first encounter, but that is not the point. whether i will buy it or not will depend on two aspects: First, the AF speed. if it is on gf1 level, that would be sufficient for my taste. Second, the lcd screen, specifically the refresh rate. again, i will judge against my gf1. All given that the IQ is on k5 level.

sorry for spelling mistakes, posting on an ipad sucks :)

sure it does determin the color temperature with a custom WB, the question is, whether it then uses the information to adjust the focus mechanism... The AWB also tries to find out, what the color temperature is (although it is not as exact as the custom WB) and still the problem appears...

you could just try it out for yourself with the tungsten setting. I know that it does improve things in my case.

Or just believe what you want to believe.

@krebsy97: obviously, it is not the white balance itself that makes the difference here (as this is a post-processing step anyway). The hypothesis is that the K-R uses the whitebalance setting information to adjust focus. It could very well be that using a custom white balance setting does not lead to this focus shift.

And since I can get better results by applying tungsten white balance, this is definitly not total nonsense - we might just not completely understand how it works and what the camera makes out of the WB setting.

In my case this improves the situation a lot - but as mentioned, that has been known since several months now. Still nice to get an "official" confirmation by Pentax, as there were several people on this and other boards who did not believe this...

Togo can you explain me how that would be technically possible, to have a front focus in manual focusing mode? I mean it's a DSLR and what you see through the viewfinder should be in principal exactly the same what the sensor sees as soon as the mirror is lifted. If you have a FF issue in manual mode, I would assume that this is not a focusing problem but an issue with the mirror.

edit: besides, I can't imagine that such an issue would be related at all to the AF FF issue

Thanks! Your picture looks great. Just yesterday I was trying to take a picture of the moon and totally blew it by using way too long shutterspeeds. So they all were completely blurred and somehow it didn't came to my mind, that the moon is moving so fast, that you can't use 15 seconds exposure...:)

Are you guys serious?? Obviously if you rely on the focus indicator by the camera, it will have the same problems as AF - WHY should it be any different? And of course any fix for the AF problem will fix that, too.

Besides, it is often easier to focus with liveview, as you can zoom and thereby better decide, when the right area of the image is sharp.

or have a look at the Tamron 17-50 F2.8 as an alternative, much cheaper and also very good image quality (however, I don't have both, so I can't compare).

Thanks e-bar! The 2nd and 3rd pictures were taken at an illuminated waterfall (the Rheinfall Schaffhausen in Switzerland). So there was a mixture of white, blue and purple light which lead to these strange reflections.
