My first DSLR was a k-x and I still enjoy using it today. I still have some issue with the screw drive not lining up completely so it doesn't engage the autofocus. I typically get around that by holding in the lens release button the entire time I twist in the lens & then shimmy the lens back into position. (Adam gave me this tip) Only then do I let up on the button & the autofocus usually engages. I only mention this since you have another thread related to it.
As far as taking pictures of fast moving subjects such as kids indoors I would suggest looking pretty closely at your technique, specifically introducing flash if necessary & bumping the iso. Here's some examples of mine. Some are taken with the kit lens, the DA35 & a Manual 50mm typically using catch in focus. IMGP1884.jpg IMGP1955 IMGP1776 IMGP2326 IMGP6180.jpg |

Your title really nailed it that you made a mistake touching the K-3. I'll throw my two cents in as well. I own a K-X and typically use a DA 50mm & DA 35mm for almost everything. You may want to sacrifice a little money for an older body and go with a simple prime & shoot a while and see what you like. You can chalk the money up to learning your way around a DSLR and you may save yourself some money knowing what you like after shooting.
But, with the budget you have, I wouldn't be able to say no to the K-3 so enjoy.

Yeah sure I'll write a review of it. It would work well for my photo walks. PM sent.

Thanks for the responses. As for wiggling the lens, there isn't much play when I mount the lens on. I'll try the wiggling as well as mounting the lens while holding the release button the entire time. Typically I dont hold the release button down and just rotate it and I hear the click. Now at least I can focus my troubleshooting. Thanks.

This issue has some threads out there but they are getting old and I would like to see if anyone has fixed this problem for good or if it keeps resurfacing. Problem:
When I switch from MF to AF on my K-X the body still says MF.
The contacts have been cleaned and I have mounted different lenses which have the same problem. I haven't been able to duplicate it consistently but it seems like I take a couple shots and then switch from MF to AF, but it doesn't register and stays in MF. The screw drive engages though because when I try to manual focus it is stiff like the screw drive is engaged. I can eventually get it into AF by changing modes, mounting & dismounting the lens etc but I don't have any repeatable steps to do it consistently.
Has anyone been able to fix this problem on a K-X? It seems like a firmware issue. Also, can I go back to a previous firmware version?

My workflow is as follows
a) take some video clips with my k-x
b) use ffmpeg to convert them to an mp4 (h264 video codec & aac audio codec) using variable bit rate
c) import the clips into final cut pro and output an mp4 (h264 video codec & aac audio codec)
My question is what's the best way to encode clips coming out of my k-x so I can import them into Final Cut in a lossless way?

I was afraid of that. I have only had it for 5 months. I should have put that money towards a better manual flash. Ugh.

I have a Metz 24 AF-1. I was taking pictures with the flash and it was going off fine. All of a sudden it stops. I change batteries. I am seeing the green charged light on the flash and when I take a picture the ok light lights up red like normal. I'm guessing the flash is getting the signal to fire since the ok light is illuminating. Am I witnessing this flash dying?

No change when specify the camera model. It picks up that it's a K-x either way. I did contact the developer as well as post here. Here's the output from the status command. Code: root@sewer:/home/sburke/Pictures/staging/20121014# pktriggercord-cli --status

I was able to get pktether / pktriggerchord (Linux) to work in Ubuntu 12.04. I'm having a problem with the output of it. My pictures are coming out with large square blocks of colors on them. Has anyone had this issue before. The following is the command line I am using and I have attached a picture of the problem.
pktriggercord-cli --frames 3 --delay 10 --auto_focus --aperture=3.5 --shutter=1/100 --iso=200-800 --select_af_point=Auto-11 -w --file_format=JPEG --quality=2 --jpeg_image_tone=vibrant -o timelapse

Thanks for all the info. I think I'm going to go the cheap old flash route. I'll probably get around to shorting the A pin eventually.

I have a Metz AF24 pttl flash. It does not have a manual mode at all. I was trying to get it to work with an older M lens. Is this possible and if so how do I do this?
