Surprisingly (or not), I tried that too. It is also making like a churning noise like a motor running. So odd.

I updated my firmware and it was not a fix. I haven't been able to afford to send it in yet as I took a family leave off of work. Hopefully I can send it in soon because I really miss my camera. I have a k-x for backup. But the pictures just don't compare to those I can take with the k-5.

I have this same issue. My camera is completely inoperable now. It sticks every time. I click the shutter, it stalls to release, never takes the photo, and freezes up the camera. The screen stays on even when I turn off the camera. And it sounds like a motor is still running, even when I turn the camera off. I am very anxious and frustrated because I had two gigs this week. I still have my k-x, but I really need the quality of the K-5 for both of my jobs this week. I cannot afford this right now :(

Thanks for the video, that helps a lot!

I have 4 kids and very busy. I wish I had time to go through review after review. I just wanted to hear straight from people who actually use the cameras in daily life, and not from someone who just picked it up to write a review. I'm weird like that.

Lowlight autofocus: Kx vs k5 vs k5ii

I am a K-x owner and I have happily used it because the majority of my photography is taken in pitch-black dark rooms with a spot light here or there (labor and delivery rooms, for birth photography). But, even with the K-x's awesome low light capabilities, it will search and search sometimes. So I was wondering.... I'd love a comparison of autofocus on these three cameras in specific conditions of low light. I want to upgrade, but only if the upgrade applies to my needs in low light conditions.

Thanks!

For the most part. My K-x is still as awesome as it ever was. It has really put my foot in the door to a broader industry at work, extending my doula services with birth photography. But I do feel a little limited by my K-x so I'm looking for an upgrade to a K-5 or K-5ii

I cannot post most of the photos that I take at work, simply because of the personal nature of them. But I caught a photo of my kids last night and it shows a problem that I often have in many of my photos. This was a random quick grab shot using lamp light in the evening. My kids bounce off the walls and stuff like this is hard to catch. I really wanted to focus on my baby's eyes, but didn't quite make it. I'm not sure if it's user error, or simply difficult to do with a K-x. Any tips or tricks to help me work that out would be great. Any other thoughts regarding the photo or PP would be great. Thanks!

Thank you so much for this wonderful advice! When it comes to marketing and customer service, I totally have got that in the bag. ;) I own my own doula business (which is how I got started in photography in the first place), and have a great set up going as far as finances and marketing are concerned. I'm also proud to say that my husband and I live our lives debt free (aside from our student loans). My husband's two businesses along with mine are both debt free. It's such a stress free and lovely way to live. Honestly, I'm horrible with money. My husband worked at a bank for a few years and became some sort of financial genius. So he gladly manages my business money, and I am so thankful for him!

I'm excited to say that a K-5 is in my near future. I break out my manual and photography books (I love picking up whatever books I can find at the thrift store) about once a month to make sure I'm using my camera to the best of my ability, and I feel like I've outgrown it a while ago. I've picked up some of my friend's entry level Canons and Nikons and I'm so thankful that I started on Pentax. The K-x was just so simple an easy to learn on. But I do feel like I'm ready to toss my training wheels out the door and use a big girl camera. I homeschool my kids, and I think the K-x will be the perfect tool for them to use for their photography classes that I give them. Since they are so young, they are using a simple point and shoot, but my daughter who is 8, will be learning to use the DSLR hopefully in the fall. She loves making movies with her point and shoot, and I can't wait to see what she can do with the K-x. Oh wow- did I rabbit trail?! Ha.

All of that being said, my grey area of clarity comes in at professionally presenting my services in publications (are watermarks mandatory? are captions sufficient?), how to charge for the pictures taken for websites (what kind of photography is this called so I can google it? Is it stock photos? or do i charge per hour for the shoot?), and I guess the same question for blogs? Since I already have jobs set up pretty much over the next year, I just need to give myself a rate. I will be doing simple shoots on location in most circumstances. I am also a "less is more" kinda gal in the equipment department, so hopefully won't require much of that. I also know that many others have come before me and I am a good southern girl who has been taught to respect my elders. I love learning from the wisdom of those who have traveled roads before me in efforts to learn from their mistakes and so forth.

Thanks again for taking time to offer me advice.

Ha. I get that too. And I will take free photos for very SPECIAL people (not just anyone). But those times are few and far between. My time is precious. I have 4 kids to look out for and take care of. I just say no. But I am VERY VERY thankful for the business that comes my way. My blessings are counted every day.

I just sort of fell into photography. I attend women at births, so I thought to myself, "Hey I should get a nice camera and take nice pictures. I could sell them to my clients." And so I did. I ended up working with these midwives who are doing some amazing things in my city, so I started taking pictures of them while they were working. Somehow I ended up published in some medical journals, blogs, and a couple of websites. Since then, more medical professionals in the area have asked if I can do some work for them. I've also been approached by some folks to do photography for their blogs. My husband is starting a web design business for the Anglican Church in the North America (hubs is a priest) and he has asked me if I would like to do photos for the websites. This means that my photos will be present across the country. And I'm starting, pretty much tomorrow, ha. It's intimidating a bit. It seems like work is just falling into my lap! But I really wasn't expecting this! I still feel like I have so much to learn. I've only had my camera for two years, I shoot with a k-x, nothing fancy, and while much of this comes naturally, there's still lots of technical stuff to learn. I end up with really nice pictures most of the time, and people seem to like them, but I'm just sort of getting these pictures willy nilly. I have folks knocking down my door to work, and I've been putting it off for a while mainly just because I don't know what I'm doing. Birth photos are easy: I take the pictures and sell them to the clients. I ask permission for the ones I want to keep and use for my website and that is that.

I guess I'm looking for some direction and some "how to's". I don't know the route to go about taking photos for blogs/websites/etc. Is it the same as what I'm currently doing? I don't know when it is good to watermark and when it is not (so far, I've been given credit in caption and I do not watermark). I don't know how to set my prices to reflect the market. In birth work, you price yourself based on how many years you've been working/how many births you have attended/how much you have to pay for back up should you not be able to make it (since most of the work is on call). It seems photography is more market based or something like that. Not sure how to charge people.

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong area. Anyhow, I am counting my blessings. This is a wonderful problem to have. I have many friends who have struggled for years to live by their cameras, and I'm thankful that my little white k-x has proved to be more than just a buddy.

Anyhow- thanks for any guidance y'all can give. I appreciate any fingers pointed in any direction. I've been googling, but sometimes you can google a topic to death and end up in a muddy puddle of useless information and that's where I feel like I am currently sitting.

Low light exposures

Aside from all of the high tech things you can do, there's some great low tech options as well. I pretty much only shoot in low light situations. And I still love my histogram even in low light. I do birth photography, where in some circumstances, all of the lights can be completely off, I can be shooting into a completely black room, and a flash would be SO DISTURBING. I bring my own natural lighting to different situations.I bring white garden/christmas lights and candles to births. This bumps up the quality of my photos exponentially. I've been known to use a small battery operated lantern and/or a flashlight. I use scarfs to tone the light down if I need it. I try to use whatever might seem natural in a given situation. But I like to have lighting options handy when I go somewhere. Without having to tote around huge hardware.

Aside from that, a good lens. I have two that sit on my camera in the dark: 35mm 1.2 and an old manual 50mm 1.8. I tend to focus manually in the dark, since my K-x tends to get lost and come up with some great photos with these lenses and they weren't that expensive either.

It sounds like you know what you are doing for the most part in post processing. So I thought I'd throw out some low light tips that help me tremendously.

Why is Instagram so popular?

I don't use Instagram to take amazing photos. I use it for social networking and photodocumentation. I am a mother of 4 kids. I honestly don't care if all of the photos that I have of them are professional worthy. I keep my pentax locked away so that they won't break it, but my iPhone is always by my side. Thanks to my iPhone I was able to capture their impromptu picnic in the front yard yesterday and share it with their grandparents and friends. It's those small moments that I want to remember as a mother, but don't need fancy photos to keep those memories alive.

That being said, I have some friends who really do take some amazing photos using Instagram. I love looking at their photos. Instagram certainly opens me up to different perspectives.

You might just be an old soul. I'm sure if I had a bunch of 18 yr olds in my Instagram feed, I wouldn't like it very much either. Luckily, I don't.

Yup, I'm just asking about the standard 18-55 that came with my camera, which is white. Just wondering if the 18-55 that comes with the K-5 is any different (other than color) than what I already have.

K-5 kit lens vs. K-x

I currently have a white K-x. I am purchasing a K-5 (classic) and trying to decide if I need to buy the kit lens. If this lens is exponentially better than the one I already have, then I might as well go for it. But if it's not, then I'll just stick with my white lens and use it whenever I have the need for 18-55mm (very rarely). I mainly use my camera for Birth Photography (think action shots and low lighting), but it does serve in various side jobs as well.

Which lens is better? Or are they the same?

Oh man. That is so much work :P Hahaha- I'll see if I can figure out how to do that in between managing my three children, homeschooling, and work. Lol. I should know those things though- it's important.

One thing I do know: there was no flash at all. I do not do flash photography on baby day. Ever.

I'm a doula and use my kx for birth photography. Here are a few. I couldn't find any without processing, but thought I'd share a couple anyhow. I'm pretty sure each is taken with an old manual 50mm 1.2 Many of my pictures are shot in complete darkness- with only the light of Christmas lights that I bring to each birth. I really appreciate the KX in those situations.
Camera settings:
Focal length 50mm, Aperture: 1.4, Exposure: 1/125, ISO 400, No Flash, Used available light from medical spot light

Focal Length 50mm, Aperture: 1.4, Exposure:1/800, ISO 400, No Flash-Used available light from medical heat lamp

Focal Length:50mm, Aperture 1.4, Exposure 1/30, ISO 1600, No Flash, no available medical spot light

Focal length: 50mm, Aperture: not listed, Exposure 1/25, ISO 800, No Flash, Used available back light from kitchen.

I am missing the original of this photo, and need to find the back-up, it won't give me the info based on the file I have online.

You're right, its just a glorified version of GIMP. I just downloaded a torrent to check it out and promptly removed it. It was just a fancy-looking GIMP program, and had a "helpful manual". So yeah- not really what I was hoping for. Thankfully I am doing OK shooting photos in camera so that there is not a dire need for post processing and I can shop around. I may eventually even learn photoshop if I can gain the patience:rolleyes:

Thanks for your input- I'll also check out photofilre
