Looking for a K5 or K5iis. Would like something in full working order, but scratches, dings, etc are ok. High shutter count is fine. Looking to pay 175-200 for a K5, 350 for K5 iis.

Myths and psuedoscience float around this forum like a plague. And if you keep arguing science against these "nonbelievers," a moderator will ban you from the thread without warning.

Cannikin is correct. I find it a bit interesting that people can "hate 35mm in both formats" and "love 50mm in both formats," even though 35mm in APS-C is pretty close to the 50mm in FF. The pseudoscience in the photography world is amazing and has a clear psychological affect on many of us.

Awesome photographs HawaiianOnline. I was wondering what lens you are using for those pipeline shots? Looks like a 600mm?

I'll be heading home to Hawaii just for the summer with my newly acquired F*300, but unfortunately the NS will be flat. Hoping for some monster south swells....I missed the set last summer.

1) Best composition, but weird fringing between the sky and rock that you should try to fix

2) I like the tone, texture, and composition, but the sky looks very strange.

3) Had potential, but I think overlapping the logs and the arch makes the scene too busy

4) I like this picture, but I would lighten up the foreground/tent a notch and bring down the saturation on the sky a bit. Also, the transition between the sky and ground give away the PP. Work on blending the two exposures seamlessly.

5) Really interesting, but I think the PP made the clouds look very fake.

Overall great, interesting photos!

Rising prices of older lens ?

Another factor is the economic principle of substitutes. Old manual lenses can be considered a rough substitute for new, AF lens (obviously not perfect substitutes). Pentax increased the prices of their new lenses within the past few years, shifting the demand to used, MF lenses. Interestingly, it seems like the price of the M50 1.7 has decreased in the past few years, perhaps due to the introduction of the DA50 1.8 at a very nice price point.

Yeah I replied to his email and explained the problem further. He said he never heard of "decentering," but I showed him the photographs and he thinks it may be a loose element or barrel. I'm sending it to him to check out in person.

Pentax F* vs DA* 300mm

I was also lured into the classic glass and look of the F*300. I just picked up a nice copy off ebay for $1030 shipped. They do command a premium over used DA*300 because of their rarity and collectors status, but I like to think the screw drive will outlast SDM and be much simpler and cheaper to fix if something goes wrong. The F*300 and DA*300 have nearly identical IQ, but the F* weighs less but lacks WR.

The photos look slightly blurry to me and a little splotchy, like these were slightly out of focus crops (maybe because of f16). I would retake this photos to correct those technicalities. Personally, I would also either move back to get the tree's full reflection in the pond, or move in to remove the reflection.

Artistically, it is awesome. Really like both the contrasts and similarities between the images and the colors. Really nice.

You are probably correct about "within spec."

Take a look at the sample pics from the 20-40 ltd. HD Pentax-DA 20-40mm f/2.8-4 Limited DC WR Lens Review Their copy seems to display irregular corner sharpness. The extreme right side is always blurrier than the left side. It seems like some level of decentering might be common...which is a little disconcerting given the high prices of these limited lenses.

Ouch, I'll give them a call tomorrow during their open hours. I'd imagine it would take them at least a couple hours to diagnose, disassemble, fix, calibrate, and reassemble the lens. In the meantime, I'll see if anyone wants a decentered 31mm on the marketplace.

Unfortunately it's not. I bought it used from a reputable user on these forums. I have other lenses I used for landscapes, so the 31mm has been used mainly for portraits and at wide apertures, where this blur at the edge of the frame is not noticeable. I can't be sure whether this decentering was there when I bought it or occurred under my possession (though I've never dropped or mishandled it).

Yup, only the 31mm. I have a K-x (the snow sunset picture was shot with it) and a K-3 which I've used for the other shots. It's definitely not the camera.

Yup I just noticed that. I retook the pictures to align it better. Actually, it seems like there is some distortion going on as well that makes it seem like the left side is closer than the right. I actually had to aim a little left (making the right side closer) for it to look even. Here are results at f4. Still blurry on the right.

I just took these. They aren't the most scientific, but I did try to align the camera and plane of focus parallel with the brick wall. Again, this is center point focused. Here's it at f2.8. The blur is apparent at f4 and f5.6, but less noticeable than at f2.8. Here's the full frame, left crop, and right crop.

Here's an example at f2.8, where the image shows significant blurring on the right side even at websize, and the affected area is greater. Check out those rocks and the blurred snow on the right. Compare with the left side.

(Sorry to hijack this thread)

Here's another example of my decentering

Full pic, center near focus point, left side, and problematic right side.

---------- Post added 03-23-14 at 06:32 AM ----------

The second picture shows objects in the plane of focus. Like I said, on the right side of the image, objects that are 20 ft in front are in focus, even though focus is set at about 200 yards.

I always use center point. It was focused at the main building. This is at f5.6. I have several other examples that all show the same blur only on the right side. I normally don't use my 31mm for landscape (usually just for portraits or other pics near wide open) so it's not noticeable on most of the pics from the lens.

Did you send your lens into CRIS or directly to Pentax? My 31mm is still boxed up and about to ship, but I'm wondering if I'd be better off selling it at a discount on Ebay (declaring the decentering). Here's at picture at f5.6 from my 31mm showing the decentering. Fortunately, it only shows up on the far right of the image and is only somewhat noticeable at 100% on my 24 inch monitor. It's significant enough to me that I'm going to have to repair it or sell it. In my crop of the right side, you can see that the bottom bush is actually in focus, but the mid and far back bushes are totally blurred. Actually, the rock on the bottom right corner is actually in decent focus. Though this picture isn't a good example, the left side of the image is completely sharp.

My 31mm is off to CRIS to get decentering issues fixed. Like your copy, it's never been dropped and looks absolutely mint. The right 1/5th of the image focuses to about 20 ft when the lens is set at infinity. Chickentender, do you mind posting the cost of repair once they quote you? A little disappointing, but at least we'll know we'll have a sharp copy when it gets back.

Yes, OP was asking about two specific lenses. I thought it was relevant to mention another alternative. Likewise, you thought it was relevant to comment on the possibility of upgrading to FF when the OP never mentioned anything about FF and you haven't ever used those two lenses. Both our posts were slightly off topic but I think they were relevant. Don't be hypocritical. Either way, let the OP decide for himself what is relevant to his decision. You don't have to be the forum police.

If you think my statements are wrong or misguided, you can provide evidence (like northcoastgreg) that adds to the discussion, as opposed to just tossing out an insult at me.

I won't be continuing this argument as the thread has derailed enough. Sorry OP.
